How truthful are the attack ads about the NDP being bad with money and raising taxes?
They're attack ads, so obviously not very reliable. "Bad with money" is subjective and could be applied to every party. The NDP do want to raise corporate tax rates, but are also promising tax relief for small businesses.

they never formed government Federally.
Conservatives are basing their claims on Provincial NDP governments but different NDP Provincial governments from different Provinces have had different results.

Only Conservatives can blunder consecutive Liberal surpluses then go out an blame everyone else for being bad with money.

Harper really loves his Canada jacket. He's wearing it again today.
I wonder if you see that in other countries, leaders parading around in patriotic wardrobe, outside of sporting events. I want Hillary to campaign in a denim jacket with a big eagle on it.
I like how the word "CAN ADA" is split apart. Harper dividing Canada sure is a thing.

An American politician (either side of the aisle) not wearing an eagle/flag lapel pin has been considered worth noting pretty much since 9/11.

Attack ads wont tell you anything. Just look at the party platforms and their record (in the case of the Conservatives) for the last 10 years.

Thanks, guys

Yeah, I knew better than to base my opinion on attack ads, but I wanted to ask because I don't follow these things as closely as most of you. Or as well as I should, really.

I don't trust Trudeau, though, and Harper has run our country into the ground, so NDP is my frontrunner. I miss Jack Layton, though :(.

the NDP has another problem, many NPD candidates in Quebec are taking position against their party line on the NIqab in regions where they want to keep their own seats. Most notably Romeo Saganash and Alex Boulerice. The candidate of Longueuil was the most angrily in disagreement with his own party

could some of these candidate MPs defect to the Bloc on the basis of the Niqab?

The economy is in shambles, only the Conservatives can get us out of this according to those commercials I see.

Ignore who put us there in the first place please

This is a good read. I'm starting to think those "Just Not Ready" ads backfired hard against the CPC. Casting Trudeau as someone you should have low expectations on might have been the best thing that happened to his campaign.

As terrible as they are, attack ads work best when they go after something that the victim can't change -- i.e. Dion was never going to come across as a strong, forceful guy, especially in English, so a lot of voters thought that "Not a leader" captured his core. Likewise with Iggy and the "Just Visiting" ads.

Attacking someone for inexperience is different, since that goes after something that can either be disproved or remedied. Not only that, rightly or wrongly there's been the perception that Trudeau has had his eye on the PM's chair for years now, so people are kind of comfortable with him. If he was just some random newcomer, then it might be effective, but I've always thought it was a weird tack to take against him.

we so need a viral hashtag... no we need just a hashtag but it is so hard to think of one that is short and good to the point

The thing that will beat Harper is people going out and voting for the other parties. No hashtag, no matter how pithy and viral it may be, is going to be a substitute for that.

#StopHarper seems good.

I guess they got the Harper stickers from CPC conventions or something.

If Jack Layton was still around, voting for the NDP would be a no brainer.

Yes but unfortunately he's not around, so you should vote for whoever has the best chance to beat the Conservatives in your riding. I don't know why you don't trust Trudeau, he seems pretty honest and has been running an honest campaign.

He seems young, has some interesting views I'm not sure of, and is part of the Liberal Party. I know it's different, but I have a hard time trusting the Liberals as a whole after the Ontario plants debacle.

Why would that matter? The provincial Liberals and the Federal Liberals aren't related.

A lot of posters here have said that Liberals have a history of campaigning from the left and governing from the right. I've read similar things in articles as well. There is also his waffling on C-51 and electoral reform to consider.

Personally, from what I have read here, I can't say that I trust him. Yeah, yeah Mulcair is creepy liar, etc, etc, but I can't see him doing worse than Trudeau. When it comes to important issues like that, Mulcair has a pretty good track record with me and like the dog avatar guy has said, there is also the backroom of the parties to consider.

I'm not happy with the NDPs current campaign but I haven't forgotten what drew me towards them in the first place.

I think I've read that the Ontario premier has been campaigning with Trudeau.

Better than Justin. He's promising more deficits. Deficits! He thinks they're a good thing!

He thinks they're a necessary evil in order to invest in infrastructure, during a time when interest rates are low and the economy is in the tank. We're not exactly talking a return to the early '90s, when the Wall Street Journal said that Canada was on the verge of becoming a Third World banana republic. And besides, if anyone actually believes we're in surplus now -- with oil $20/barrel lower than predicted -- they're incredibly gullible.

In other news, that Hamilton NDP candidate who didn't know what Auschwitz was has resigned
from her day job as school board trustee

They are, when used to invest. Kind of like how most people take out mortgages or car loans to get newer and better stuff.

Still don't understand how you go through elementary school, middle school, high school or university without knowing what Auschwitz was.

In all my years of schooling, I think it only came up once in grade 7 social studies when we were learning about war. Grade 8 was ancient civilisations, grade 9 was about the government, grade 10 was geography and grade 11 was Canadian history. Of course, I know about Auschwitz but they don't really teach about it in school.
I dont know how it could be a toss up between the NDP and CPC for your vote. The two parties couldn't be any more different in their ideologies.

Damn, the depressing polls must have messed with GAF's sarcasm detector today.

Well she was either stupid and didn't learn about anything ww2 related or in pop culture, or novels, or people just randomly talking about it or she's a liar about the whole thing. Which one is worse to you?

We had to watch Schindler's List and the 2000 Nuremberg movie with Alec Baldwin in grade 10 history. (Which I feel like is mandatory in Ontario)

Not that not having that experience exculpates an adult from ignorance on the fact

This is sort of what it boils down to. Her options were basically "I'm ignorant" or "It was insensitive of me." Maybe it says something about me, but I feel like apologizing for doing something offensive when you were younger is far preferable to admitting that you're an idiot.

Speaking of stupidity, I don't see this going well for Mulcair: NDP sets sights on Trudeau in bid to recapture momentum

CBC News has learned that the NDP, now appearing to trail in the polls, will be buying more broadcast ads in an attempt to blunt Trudeau's rise in Quebec, a province where it's crucial for the party to at least retain its seat count for any hopes of a victory.

This new strategy would move away from comparing NDP policy with the Liberal plans and instead highlight the issue of leadership — who would make the best prime minister.

The idea is to demonstrate Tom Mulcair is a stronger leader than Trudeau, to knock down his support a few points and to reduce the Liberal leader's likability quotient in English Canada.

They've gone from trying to pretend that the Liberals didn't exist at the outset of the campaign (i.e. Mulcair wouldn't say their name, and would only call them "the third-place party") to focusing all their attacks on them. Does that reek of desperation to anyone else?

the weird thing is, most of the shifting in national-level polls in the past couple weeks has been from the NDP to the CPC

Casual/swing voters don't actually seem all that informed on ideologies or platforms in the first place though.
So if Mulcair hasn't looked that appealing over the past few weeks to these voters you will see people switch over.

The soft Liberal supporters/ swing voters are the ones they need to rely on to win this election or keep official opposition status. It does reek of desperation, but we really haven't seen what they plan to do yet. Let's hope the ads are not as bad as some of the conservative ads that were targeting the Liberals earlier this year.

Maybe they realised that it's over for all of us and just want to stay in opposition.

Would love to vote Lib, but they have about as much support here as the greens (ie: below double digits projected), so i'm gonna vote NDP.

Which sucks since the guys whose running for the NDP here has done some.... things the last couple of months...

I just really don't want the Tories again...

That would help if all the popular canadian celebrities weren't living south of the border.
There's no one to tell our youth to "rock the vote".
indeed
plus even if those people would they can't vote and are too busy to pop on by to their homeland

StopHarper was a good one but then it got muddled and people asked from what... plus I believe that girl who had that sign in the house of commons is now a Haprer groupie

There are tons of CPC vs NDP contests across the country.

A great deal of these are in rural and working class areas, where the NDP's traditional working class, pro-union history is more appealing than the Liberal Party.

Yes but when confronted about the post, she claimed she didn't even know what Auschwitz was!

The woman works for the board of education for crissakes. A well connected moron.

Glad she stepped down.
