there would be no Canada without Samuel de Champlain, history is your friend
Just saying, if America doesn't need an official language...

(The fact that the Charter ignores aboriginal languages is silly too, if the whole point was to protect Canadian language and culture).

Well, Justin has a bit of a populist streak in him.

Er? The threshold doesn't take away from how many seats you get, it's just a minimum for consideration. If you get N% > 5%, you get N% of seats.

Yeah, that's what I said. Bloc has 4.9% of votes, which falls short of 5%, so they wouldn't get any top up seats.

However, I think there was another German rule that said if you win 3 local seats, you would get top up seats regardless if you got 5% or not. I might be remembering wrong though, or it might've been the Ontario version of MPP. We should make that 12 in the National version lol.

Pierre Trudeau told lawmakers to stay out Canadians' bedrooms, converted us to the Metric system, made Canada officially bilingual, created Petro-Canada, kept us out of Viet-Nam, signed the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Repatriated the Constitution.

Pierre Trudeau was a great Prime Minister, not perfect, he had some faults but not many Canadian Prime Ministers can notch down so many accompaniments under his belt.

What is Harper's legacy???? ***crickets*****

So much this. He was a flawed man but he did a lot of great things for Canada. People these days underestimate the impact trudeau had on Canada as a unified bilingual country.

Ah I see, I misunderstood what you were saying.

Hey now, he likes movies and tv shows like Breaking Bad, which you can find on streaming services such as Netflix.

Harper saved the Canadian right wing. I mean, whether or not you disagree with his actual policies, that's what he will be remembered for.

You know that if it wasn't FPTP, they would get 16 seats with 5% of the vote (instead of 10 seats)?

Well maybe. It depends on where the cutoff would be. If we had the New Zealand rules where you must have greater than 5% support to gain additional seats via PR they would have been held to these 10.

My original post was pretty stupid because in any system with ridings you could get this type of outcome if support was highly concentrated in those ridings. Of course in MMP you'd have all the other votes taken into account, so the Bloc support in this case would have been diluted by the other parties receiving additional seats. The point of my comment was not anti-Bloc, but that FPTP can yield weird looking outcomes.

Okay, he did that, that was cool. That's my #1 Harper thing. Also, plastic money. It's not exactly the constitution, but hey.

Well, you have to take your victories as you make them. I hate what Harper has done, but I can still pull out a couple things he did that were beneficial to Canada

He got rid of the economically inefficient Penny.
Some people hate the community mailboxes, but it's saved me so much time lately.

Although I do feel bad that I never see the Korean family that runs my local post office anymore. I went from visiting them like 4 times a month to nothing. lol

Still remember Justin's eulogy at his father's funeral.
Don't think I've ever heard a better one.

You know, I haven't really thought of it until now, but it is kind of weird that we can pretty much look up anything about Trudeau at any point in his life and find it... It seems pretty much unprecedented when you compare it to any other politician in history, and its really only going to happen more and more going forward now that we have much more advanced technology and the internet

Harper will be remembered mainly for "uniting the right". There's also his various trade deals, CETA and the TPP chief among them, and indeed this does seem to be a major part of what the want's his legacy to be. Also, the TFSA is pretty cool.

On the negative side he might be remembered for his abysmal environmental record, his style of politics, his rejection of science and statistics (let's call it data driven governance) and his muted emotions (especially in contrast to Trudeau).

Someone explain the Japan thing to me

This is like the third time I've heard of it

On the serious side, Nomura Investments and basically Japanese businesses, have stated a Liberal government, would be the most favourable for investing and business with Canada. They thought it would be a Liberal minority, but of course it was more than that.

The not serious side is, Japan being Japan. They will go gaga for Justin because he's good looking and young, not just netizens but the Japanese public and media. There's been manga and I think of anime of politicians from around the world, that Koizumi mahjong one comes to mind and it's quite huge. It even has ringing endorsements of actual Japanese politicians who were parodied in it too. I think even Harper was in that.

Japan and I think also some other Asian countries went gaga for that female Russian politician during the height of her 15 minutes when the Ukraine crisis due to her looks. Just google Russian politician anime or manga and she'll pop up.

It made some waves, but now with a head of state with that kind of appeal like Justin, well you get the idea. Also as you've probably already seen other countries like Germany, Mexico, India, France and even the US are already getting hyped or intrigued by Trudeaumania deux.

Only JapanGAF got my random jokes, but don't be surprised when you start seeing Justin fan art or other crazy things from Japan and you see イケメン alongside Justin.

I added the 超 for extra hilarity.

In tandem, it means super good-looking/handsome/exciting man, take your pick or combine them all!

Alot of older people at my work saying the same thing. 'All these young people too young to remember how shitty a prime minister his father was.'
Well, being under 30 I was too young.. was he really that bad?
Yes. But as mentioned, that answer will vary depending on region.

All I can say is if you were skeptical about the previous government, you need to continue to be skeptical about this one. History is doing the Liberals no favors.

Anyone know what happens with lawn signs? Like does someone come take this away or do I need to call?
I don't think you need to call unless they don't go away soon.

I think my area must have added a city bylaw because there was a significant reduction of signs this time. The previous election was ridiculous with signs every 10 feet. After that election while waiting for a bus I picked up one of those wire frames hiding in the grass and thinking how much that would have screwed up a lawn mower. If that was happening on city property, I'm guessing the city put their foot down about the number of election signs.

I thought Kenney was gay, but I looked it up and it's Baird that is believed to be gay. I think Kenney is an evangelical Christian and that is the reason for his virginity, that he is not married so he can't have sex. Or at least that is the claim.

Well with the rumours of Baird living it up in Israel and Palestine, I doubt that Kenney is a virgin. He's probably been with a stripper or something like the rest of the CPC cabinet.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/bef...rcmp-got-3-warnings-reduced-patrols-1.3280632

Mounties received at least three warnings of potential terrorist attacks on uniformed officers before last year's shootings on Parliament Hill, yet the RCMP wound down extra patrols around the parliamentary precinct just days before the tragedy, newly disclosed documents show.

The RCMP unit that patrols Parliament Hill, which shooter Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, 32, successfully stormed, was understaffed by at least 29 positions at the time of the attack.

"The approach to the security and protection of Parliament Hill is highly inadequate," it concluded. "The RCMP posture on Parliament Hill has been challenging due to the limited amount of resources available, which are reflective of budget cuts in 2012."

Unbelievable. Thank fuck Harper is out.

How were the Liberals ever as bad as the Harper government? Stumps post says it best:

The Martin and Chretien governments were great. The sponsorship scandal was fairly overblown by the end of it if thats what youre talking about.

Harper was a disaster.

Jean Charest says he is not interested in seeking the leadership of the Conservative party
unless if it's a coronation

----

I learned yesterday that Jason Kenney is a virgin. How can someone peddle Conservative family values if one never aspires to make a family?

Half of the new testament is written by a guy who was a self-proclaimed virgin who insisted that not marrying and remaining 'pure' is godlier than marriage. So.. that's how.

I keep mixing up Kenney and Baird too. Doesn't help that they look so similar.
