I wouldn't mind an introduction of a luxury tax as part of a consumption tax increase. No reason why they couldn't tax stuff like video games more than say a bag of oranges or whatever.

There's no tax on a bag of oranges.

I'd say raise the GST a little bit but make a few more things tax-free (electricity, Internet, public transport, children clothing, gym, etc.).

Brazil has a ''gambling'' tax on video games....

guess what happened? Piracy is sky high in Brazil due to the utlra expensive price of games.

Canada is a video-game making country by the way.

IMO, taxes are not the answer. Taxes are a lazy way to increase revenue and they are unimaginative.

Canada can save money by carefully selecting to keep the right programs, trim the fat off lesser used programs and balbalbalbla. There are ways to save money without raising taxes on the average joe

Bringing this back to post election discussion:

What the hell does the NDP do now?

With a majority government in place the NDP have 4 long years to figure out what they're going to do with themselves.

It seems obviously clear that the NDP should never again allow for the possibility that someone would think that the Liberals are more progressive than them. They need to be more bold about where they stand. This time the NDP didn't communicate their platform well, it was too nuanced and it went over people's heads. Also it's clear that people don't take well to promises that would only arrive far in the future. The NDP need to be more creative and bolder. I'd like to see them take some more risks next election. Given that they'll be in 3rd place, I don't see why they shouldn't.

The NDP did lose a huge amount of seats in Quebec, but it's worth noting that they kept quite a few. It remains their strongest province. They did manage to lay down some roots. What does this mean for the NDP? The NDP weren't relegated to being a western protest party. They still have national support. How do they expand in Quebec?

It's untenable that the NDP lost Jack Layton's old seat and were shut out of Toronto. Many areas of urban Old Toronto are areas that would naturally support the NDP. It's clear that the ABC movement hit them hard here. The NDP needs to take these back next election.

Layton, an ex-Toronto City Councillor was moving the NDP toward being the party of the cities. With this election result it's clear that the NDP got distracted from that goal and the Liberals, with big infrastructure promises, were able to take that place. If the NDP is going to gain more seats I think they have to once again become the unquestionable best party for urban dwellers.

There were a few weak and fuzzy areas of the Liberal platform such as the environment and housing. The NDP could start here and create a more substantial and differentiated platform from the Liberals.

about the NDP:
Canada already has a Centrist party since Confederation. We don't need an orange immitation version

Justin ran a more progressive campaign than Tom Thatcher bulk-water Mulcair

the NDP should know their role and stay on the Left as a Socio-Democrat Party clearly on the Left Wing. Stay out of the Center, that's Liberal country

If we do this, why dont we go a step further and have a "Healthy Body Tax Credit"... something where every year you get a checkup around tax time and your doctor gives you a form saying if you qualify or not... something to try and incentivize staying healthy so that we can reduce strain on healthcare costs
.....You can't be serious??!

It's clear that the ABC movement hit them hard here. The NDP needs to take these back next election, which is something Mulcair is unquestionably good at.

A lot is going to depend on who replaces Harper (because it almost necessarily defines where the CPC in 2019 will pose the greatest thread to the Liberals). In the meantime, they need to do exactly what the Liberals did: Act like they're the official opposition in parliament, which is a job Mulcair is well suited to.

Tom's not going to leave just yet. The NDP is letting him make that decision.
http://www.thestar.com/news/federal...thomas-mulcair-decide-his-fate-as-leader.html

I think this is a better idea then going through what the Liberals went through in the last decade or so before they won on Monday and what the Conservatives are going to have to deal with soon or are already dealing with.

I agree. I don't like party in-fighting. Everyone be friends!
Judy Rebick, who was involved with a left-wing movement in the NDP in the 1980s, said she sees a role for Mulcair in the House of Commons pushing the Liberals to go further on the issues he was particularly bold on, such as climate change, violence against women and restoring the relationship between Canada and its First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, while the party focuses on rebuilding itself.
“He’s passionate about all those things, so rather than have a leadership fight, which is usually just about personality, I’d rather see that and then have a big policy discussion that isn’t a leadership fight where the NDP can talk about who it is and who it wants to be,” said Rebick.
Well said. They have bigger things to worry about.

Proposed nothing, the Tories implemented that as soon as they could, the yearly TFSA contribution is $10K now.

The Liberals promised to roll that back to the previous amount. When that is, who knows.
I'm cool with it because I don't have that kind of cash yet to save in a TFSA, I've still got RRSPs to contribute to.
Putting money in rrsp is stupid compared to tfsa

I think he's a crazy guy that got banned from GAF a while ago. I guess he's a gator too?

He's the founder of Silicon Knights, 'famous' for making the game Eternal Darkness for the N64 and the vapourware-turned-game Too Human for the gamecube then xbox then xbox 360. And for being a bit of a tool who got into a fight with evilore once.

FTFY

He also made Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, which is one of my all-time favourites. It's so sad to see how low he's sunk over the last decade or so.

JT: I don’t have to listen to this sanctimonious crap.

Edit: Is no one seriously going to make a Newly Elected Canadian PM is anti GG thread on Gaming side?

I thought about it last night but decided against it. If we make a big thing out of it gamer gators my go after his family or something.

Luxury sales tax usually backfires. What happens is rich people stop buying yachts, and the people who make yachts (working class people) lose their jobs.

If you're gonna sin tax, put it on actual behaviours you want to discourage.

edit: Dyack is unhirable LOL His Kickstarter funds are all drying out from what I heard.

He's the Prime Minister of Canada. If they want to start sending death threats to his family, then I hope they enjoy friendly chats with the RCMP.

Pretty much this, it would be a fun thread; but not worth it... although if they did dare to try anything they would pretty much be facing the wrath of several Secret Security Agencies, Police Forces and a few Military Squads from all over the world, all over their asses. If they even dared to act, they could also get considered terrorists and tossed in some pretty unsavory prisons

I don't know about that. Lizard Squad caused a very big mess and it took a year to track them down. Them all living in different countries complicates things. And they can do a lot of damage. Desecrating graves, posting bullying pictures, etc. Obviously they won't be able to physically hurt anyone but they can still do damage.

HE'S THE FREAKING PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA. His whole family is now going to be shadowed by an RCMP detail. Let them try some shit, we may actually see some of those asshats tossed in jail.

Edit: Beaten by Simon.

Edit #2: now that I think about it, I think a thread on it was already created he first said it. May try to search for it when I get home, not as easy on mobile.

I checked the Gator site on Reddit last night and it's pretty much people calling Trudeau's mom a slut among other vile things.

If they're going to do illegal things, they'll get hosed for it eventually.

You guys don't know how vicious these people are. They use a child porn site so they obviously know how to dodge the feds. They can cause a lot of problems. I just don't want to put a target on his back. If there's a GAF thread on it, I'd expect it to get big (like all GG threads). And they would smell the blood in the water.

If there's anyone immune from gators it's heads of state that have very serious people protecting them from the possibility of actual serious threats.

I mean what's GG gonna do to Trudeau? Doxx him? Swat (mountie) him? Start a gator party that will sweep to power on a policy of "Sarkeesian is a meanie"?

They don't 'know how to dodge the feds'. The feds are very much aware of their site. They are simply too small fry for the police to devote resources to go after them.

Aw, you're cute. Like making a thread on GAF is going to make a difference in putting a target on his back.

I don't think there's really anything to gain by drawing attention to GG rantings directly. Being vocal about how wrong they are is good, but just "look at this dumb thing they did!" isn't really doing anyone any good.

I am glad to not know what gamergate is.

I tried to google it to find out what it was and I came out more confused.

So gamegate people are bad, right?

Some GG supporters definitely read GAF and I think GAF is an important part of the GG conflict. There's GG on KotakuInAction subreddit and Twitter, and there's also anti-GG on GAF and Twitter. If the anti-GG rally around a figure, GG will target them, same as they always do.

I think people have misunderstood me. I don't think GG can physically do anything. They never have to anyone else, as far as I am aware. I'm talking about harassment. I believe someone took a picture of the SOE's president's father's grave and also called in a bomb threat on his flight. Weird things like this can happen to Trudeau's family. They aren't impervious to harassment.

There are crazy people out there who literally think Trudeau is a commie who's coming to take away their guns. I think gamer gaters are the least of his worries.

Actually, there's probably some overlap between these two groups.

Eh, basically. Think of them as young social-conservative reactionaries since gaming seems to be only tangentially involved. Though the young bit might be inaccurate since I recall one of them complaining about how SJWs censored cartoons in the 70s during a call-in livestream with Jeff Gerstmann.
