From what I can tell it's very common for old houses in Ottawa to have asbestos in the walls. As long as you don't ever touch it or drill random holes in walls, it's not dangerous. But if you need to do any major work on your house you need to move out for like a long time until it's done and have an expensive team of people to safely remove any asbestos in the area.

It's extremely common for any building that's more than about 35 years old to have asbestos in it. The biggest problem with having it is that you can't safely do renovations without it becoming a much bigger project (because of remediation). It just being there isn't really a problem in and of itself.

(yeah, I know I'm basically saying exactly what you said, but I think it needs to be reinforced because there's a lot of weird ... "ZOMG ASBESTOS PANIC" posts going around...)

Everyone posting in this thread has probably lived or worked in a building that had asbestos in it somewhere without knowing it and is not dead yet.

Well the problem is that 24 sussex is reportedly really worn down, so who knows how intact that asbestos is, or if it's beginning to break down in any way.

quite frankly it would probably be easier to tear it down and rebuild

especially since these repairs will likely not be its last and who knows how much more expensive it will be to maintain such a mess of a house as the years move on

On another note... maybe already posted but I agree with this persons open letter to Trudeau

seeing as he saw it I hope he tries his hardest to stay honest

I've had a community mailbox for a few years. It definitely isn't bad.

I've been using a community mailbox since 1997, don't really see the big deal.

the big deal is for old neighborhoods that never had one than they decide to shove one on your lawn without your consent.

and the other big deal is for highly densely populated urban areas where there are no public spaces to put them or have them at risk of bums and junkies to pee on them or vandalize them or try to crack them open

it`s not fun being that home owner have the Crown dump a slab of concrete and a community box on your property without your consent. And people tossing junk mail on your lawn.

Imagine them putting those boxes in Vancouver East, eeessh yuck, find poop and a needle in the box

Plus not being able to get your mail while only wearing underwear without getting the cops called on you.

Harper govt's first decision - help for grain farmers. Trudeau's first? Blank cheq to renovate his new house.

look at this tool bag. Apparently Trudeau didn't tell the US they were pulling out of active war in syria or something.

I'm surprised it took this long to be honest. I'll bet as soon as parliament resumes this will be the cons first big swipe at Trudeau and wasting tax payers money

Don't forget that Trudeau and the LPC are going to can the order of F-35s. Lockheed Martin is already sad about it, with Dassault and Boeing licking their lips.

Canada Post is suspending the community mailbox program, effective immediately.

The Liberals are making good progress on their campaign promises, and they're not even in power yet.

I always found the issue pretty stupid and overblown to begin. It's going to happen eventually, all this is doing is just tossing the ball down the road another 5 or 10 years.

What was wrong with the community mailbox program?
People are lazy and don't want to walk a couple tens of meters down the street.

I love how people make it into some sort of crusade on behalf of the elderly and disabled, as if there aren't elderly and disabled people who live in the 67% of the country that already has community mailboxes

Nothing, I've lived in two different homes the last 15 years and have had a community mailbox for both(including one that was really far), it's really a non-issue for anyone that's not the elderly or disabled.

Anyone who makes a big deal about this doesn't deserve anyone else's time and ear. The guy is getting ripped for his tweet on Twitter.

Hey there are some people who voted for Justin's hope and real change that their mail deliveries don't have to. :x

I love our community mailbox but I'm not an old person/public nudist.
One thing I have seen without fail is that children love the boxes... always begging their parents for the key so they can run to the box and open it, jumping up and down if they aren't tall enough.

If your a regular adult, chances are you will pass by your box at least twice a day for work... so all that does is add a 30 second stop on your way home, and even then this is only for mail and small packages, because larger packages that don't fit in the Large Package box will get brought to your door anyways

I didn't get this in my neighbourhood but I literally shudder to think of how such a thing would work in the dry winter when it's below -40. Do they provide you with a notification when you get mail or do you have to check on it everyday?

My neighbourhood is filled with elderly people and we don't have community mailboxes.

We order a lot of small/medium sized packages and I like that it ends up in a locked box 30 seconds away.

How much urgent mail do you get at this point?

This is basically how I feel about this debate as well, more or less. It feels like perfectly able bodied suburbanites trying to use non-able bodied people and people who live in remote places to preserve a really expensive and increasingly silly privilege. Never mind that using that angle of argument implicitly reinforces the idea that everyone should live in a suburban house. Preserving home delivery for people in cities and suburbs does not strike me as "data driven governance," it's just pure populism.

I had one growing up in Kenora. Lots of elderly people in the neighborhood. It was conveniently located and people checked it when they were out getting groceries or going to work or walking the dog or doing all the other things that people have to go outside for.

I am not sure how much mail you get but I only pick up mine from the Super Mailbox once every couple of weeks. If I am expecting a package, I always fill out the SMS notification section of the Canada Post package tracking, and simply drop by that day after work.

Will QA for food.
I've never had someone wander into our building lobby and pee in our community mailbox. I guess I should count myself lucky.

They just finished installing the community mailboxes in my neighborhood. There's lots of them so it's only a few second walk for most people. They're actually quite convenient because packages are securely stored and much easier than making a trip to the post office if you're not home for delivery. It's also easier to mail a letter because now there are mailboxes everywhere.

Cancelling this program is a huge waste of money. The whole point was to reduce the costs for Canada Post. Now all that work and planning to install these gets thrown away and they have to go back to home delivery? Terrible decision.

I was never a fan of community mailboxes to begin with, but I find that double backing on it now to be just the darndest thing.

The backlash about community mailboxes is really strange. I grew up in a neighbourhood that had community mailboxes starting around 1990, so it was actually kind of weird when I moved out and into a neighbourhood that still had door to door delivery. The best part is packages are typically locked and not sitting out in the open on your property.

No, this is the best part, having packages right outside my door. It's not like anyone actually tries to take them anyway.

Tearing down a 150-year-old mansion that's been used as the Prime Minister's residence for the past 65 years because we were too cheap to pay for its upkeep would be a symbol of this country's indifference to its heritage as well as its lack of taste. The asbestos isn't an issue unless major renovations occur while they're living in the home.

Anyone in this thread that lives in a building built pre-1980 is surrounded by asbestos. For instance, those popcorn ceilings that were so popular in the 60s and 70s are often asbestos-ridden. As long as you don't agitate them, you won't inhale any of it, though.

I have had some pricey / not easily replaceable stuff that's been just lopped outside my door when the seller hasn't required a signature. Theft isn't a problem where I live, but I would rather walk a few houses down and have it there in a locked box than just sitting out in the open for any rando to see.

When we got our notice about our community mailbox, it claimed the location would be not even close to our house. It was really strange and it didn't exactly fill us with confidence.

They should just say fuck the optics and fix the damn house. People will have some fun with it during Trudeau's honeymoon period, and no one will give a shit about it in 4 years. Fix. the. damn. house!

Btw, this was PnP's ballot box question a few days ago :lol

Friday we asked: Should 24 Sussex Drive be renovated?

Here are the results:

Yes, spend the money: 1281 votes (93%)
No, it will cost too much: 78 votes (6%)
Not sure: 8 votes (1%)
