I imagine they could opt for the "soft reboot" route, just like Kobayashi and his team opted fo do for Sengoku BASARA 4 earlier this year. Same classic characters, same setting, but the story has been rolled back enough so that guys like Vergil can be back in the plot.

The trademark filing definetely seems genuine.

This is the trademark used by Devil May Cry 1 in 2001, used commercially.

Hoax trademarks are discarded, this one got accepted by the office after the whole process (taking a few months).

Now of course, it could still be a mobile game for all we know.

That's true. I've said it too earlier. We DMC fans are starved, so we want a new game soon, but we all know how cool DD is. It should and will be next on the list.
