Catherine (English) Reviews Thread

I would be very surprised if anyone getting this game gave a crap what Western reviewers thought of this game.

Numbers number numbers!!!

Exactly :/ Either way, I'm glad Colin gave it a good score. I usually see eye to eye with some of his gaming choices so I kind of trust his recommendations.

That being sad, I've had this game reserved since March and it's the only packaged game I planned on getting this month. Played the JPN demo a few months ago and knew then that I would want Catherine... or Katherine... or... whichever is the one on the cover of the PS3 version :)

Hopefully, since I'm supporting Catherine, I will get my Persona 5 soon. Do you hear me Atlus?!?

The review mainly just complains about it being too hard, and how the thought of another difficult puzzle took him away from enjoying the story. He also complained because the decisions he made caused him to get one of the worst endings in the game, which meant that he'd have to play through a long game (around 12-15h) that has a high difficult level again to get a better ending.

It's weird seeing games get lower scores for being too hard.

With the way most games hold your hand these days with nothing but positive reinforcement it's not really surprising.

I don't believe the difficulty affects the ending. It's just a harder-than-average adventure/puzzle game overall.

Ah I see.

I liked theme song in the main menu. Left the 360 on just to listen to it, it's that good.

The story is interesting and the puzzle's are indeed rewarding like the ign reviewer said.

Overall fun game :)

Just played the Demo. Interesting. Not sure how much i'm liking the gameplay to be honest, but i still wanna experience it. Probably rent it.

As with all multiplatform games, PS3 or 360?

Also, this just left me fiending for SMT4 or Persona 5 on this engine.

The baka gaijin press gave rather stellar review scores to Persona 4.

Oddly enough, some people care about reviews!
Definitely. I had to pre-order this on import as it's not getting a UK release, so if it got universally panned by the critics I'd probably have cancelled. It's looking good so far though!

One of the many reasons why I hate people who are hired to write reviews for video games
Demon's Souls, Meat Boy, and Vanquish got good scores despite being hard.

There's a difference between, 'this is hard but i want to keep playing' and 'this is made to force more playtime out of me'

I hope this does well as I fear that future, similar titles may depend on the reception. Also, is anybody else going to put pizza in the pizza box from the Love is Over CE?

Hmmm, the ending thing interests me. Might just use a FAQ only to avoid a crappy ending, but other than that I welcome the difficulty.

It's not hard to avoid a bad ending, it's actually really easy to get a good or bad ending, but...

(ending spoilers)
There is the "true" bad ending and the "true" good ending, where you have to make all the right decisions

I wish it was more of a dating SIM or an RPG rather then a puzzle game.

But who knows, I guess I'll have to try it first before I pass judgement on it.

Atlus published (or developed) games tend to sell rather well. 3D Dot Game Heroes ended up selling over 150k in the US. The Japanese version already exceeded Atlus' expectations and they seemed to be planning to turn it into a series.

I went w/ PS3 for the dpad, but am curious if there are any loading/performance issues.

Edit: n/m difficulty thing was answered.

Seeing Oichi's post has spoiler-scared me. I sometimes highlight spoiler tags without thinking about it.

I'm going to run away now.

Great start. Even if the western reviews get more negative from here, Soejima's art in HD is enough to keep my pre-order locked in. I think it's really cool that ATLUS are testing their HD legs on a game like this before moving onto Persona 5 or whatever their next rpg is.

You're inferring something that isn't there. I'm not saying they're retarded because they're western.

Catherine just doesn't seem like the kind of game that's going to win or lose people based on the review. If you want to play it, you'll play it, despite what reviewers say. Also, no amount of 9's will draw in people who were chased away by the subject matter.

But hey, if you want to pretend I'm some sort of pathetic weeaboo, have at it.

Catherine doesn't strike me as a game that's aiming for 10's across the board, it's essentially a timed puzzle game, they're not exactly making it easy for themselves

Seems to fall in line with other Atlus games. Namely the Megaten ones. They aren't exactly a cake walk unless you play on Easy.

Actually, I'm particularly interested in the reviews, because I really don't know what I'm getting into it with it. I think it looks cool, but it could still be awful. I basically already know how good Uncharted 3 and Battlefield 3 are going to be, and exactly what they're going to deliver, for example.

so when is this game out in the us and pal regions respectively? did he review the jap version?

The game comes to North America July 26th. It is not announced for any European region (and I highly doubt it will be, but hey, maybe someone will step up to the plate). NA review copies have been sent to outlets for review.

Anyone wish this wasnt 60 dollars and was like a budget 30-40. Seems like the type of game that would be budget too.

I wish all games were cheaper. And after beating the JP version, this game was very much worth the price.

I'd really like to buy this game just to support it, but the gameplay doesn't look like something I'd enjoy at all. Not a big puzzle guy.

You could try the demo just to verify whether you can get into it or not.

By the way, you can avoid replaying the whole game to get all the endings.

There's a key point at the final stage. Your alignment at that point
Law/Chaos/Neutral
determines your path. Then you get one of two or three(depending) endings based on that alignment, and the choices you make during the final stage.
