Catherine |OT| Sheep, Matrimony, Terror - Love Is Gone

I remember reading in the manual you can activate a Very Easy mode (so even easier than Easy) by holding Select or something until you hear a chime at the difficulty select screen. You won't see the option appear, but once the chime sounds, Easy has become Very Easy. I haven't started the game yet, but I think I may go this route in the interest of seeing the full game through the first time. Then I can revisit levels on higher difficulties for fun.

The only problem I had on this stage was when they would go on top of the block you were trying to get onto. It's crucial to tell them to 'wait!' while you're constructing the path upwards, then just call them up once there is a way. You can mostly just make your own way up, your partner moves pretty quickly behind

I was right at the end of that level, and had to restart it because
she was too fucking slow and got hit right as I was about to climb to the last block. Infuriating.

nah, you're just obviously a little upset :) . that level was pretty damn cool (& very unexpected, by me, anyway). not saying it was easy, but it was very doable if you paid attention, &, as mentioned,
used the 'wait' command when necessary
...

one of my favorite levels, actually
catherine does ico :)

Anyone think the comment by
Astaroth in the confessional
near the very end of the game, about
Vincent seeing him again at some time, in some way, in the future
hints to a sequel? His whole involvement was only vaguely touched on right towards the end, plus we never actually
saw
him

Catherine was already confirmed to be a Franchise bro, though they haven't officially announced a sequel. I imagine a sequel would come out only after the next persona game though, could be wrong.
And then there's a problem of which ending is canon. I'm betting they make the true freedom ending canon

I hope so! Awesome ending that one was, plus it
gives more room for plot because Vincent isn't attached to either woman
though I'm not sure how 'Catherine' title would work without
bringing Catherine back herself for some reason
I'd also like to see them expand on
the whole space station/colony thing, a character based game set in space
would be a nice change

2nd playthrough done and the best ending is really great. really satisfying. altho i really liked the normal good ending i got on my first playthrough. that was just as satisfying. curious about the bad endings.

Okay... what the fuck is going on with this games' story?

Well, the entire game
hinted at the true freedom ending being canon. They hinted the women's wrestling thing at the very start, the sheep mentions 'true freedom' when you get to the top, and vincent overhears others talking about the space station which is where he hatches the idea of going into space. All of the other endings have no foreshadowing like that. If the next game didn't feature Vincent as a MC, they could easily do a sequel because everyone sees who Catherine is differently.
But i'd want vincent as an MC just for continuity.

Anyway, i'm on hardmode on my second playthrough and i'm up to
5-3
, trying to gold everything so I can skip the puzzles on future playthroughs. Tough stuff.

It's a japanese game.

Are you having any particular trouble with
5-3
? It took me a lot of retries, but it wasn't too bad. I had the technique down quick, but was having trouble evading the boss's attacks.

EDIT: Anyone else love this game's title screen music? Not to mention the title screen itself is awesome. I love it.

Is that one 'It's a Golden Show'? or something like that, I always picked that in the jukebox, it takes a while to get going but when it picks up it's probably my favourite track

Yep, that's the one

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.

If
9-5

I found that level very frustrating as well. If the enemy cracked certain blocks, I had to start over. Pretty luck based in my opinion, and I played on easy

What... was I supposed to gain from that?

What a game. Just, wow.

And not in a positive way btw.

It's like you were expecting a different game, and probably don't know the Persona team and their games.

Anyone play this on 360?

The forced DPad in gameplay, right? Actually, I never tired using sticks for anything. I imagine if they did force dpad, 360 would be pretty terrible to play.

Hmm, you might be right about that, but I don't remember if the sticks worked during block mode. I played it on PS3. 360 dpad wouldn't be completely game breaking, but definitely annoying.

I knew exactly what kind of gameplay this game had before buying it. Story-wise though? I expected a (real horror), powerful and serious story-line... I got none of that. I wasn't immersed at all after the first 4-5 chapters :( It's a pity, I was so pumped for this.

Eh, I guess the game isn't for everyone. Did you like the demo, Yoshichan?
I didn't play the demo because I knew the overall "feeling" of the game would have gone to waste. And I'm sure I would've bought the game even if I would had tried the demo out. I never had very high hopes for the gameplay, but I was very interested in the story... turns out it's garbage though :(

Troll confirmed? This game's plot is very serious. And this game doesn't have chapters, i'm not sure you actually played the game, do you have a gamertag or something so we can confirm you actually own the game?

And i'm laughing really, Catherine's plot delves into details other games would be too scared to even consider discussing, like
a police officer murdering his wife and 'is still investigating the case', cheating on your girlfriend, finding out your girlfriend is pregnant, etc. etc.
. This is truly a mature game for mature adults, and if you think that's trash? I'm sorry for your regret. I'm not sure what you were expecting.

Well, that's what I was saying. Persona is like that.

Persona 3, portrayed as emo kids shooting themselves in the head and all. Doom and gloom everywhere, and yet they manage to make a game about dating more than death.

It sounded like you were expecting Silent Hill level horror.

Are you shitting me? By chapters, I mean nightmare - if you used your brain just slightly you'd actually know what I meant. I don't know your expectations and what you consider a "serious" story but
having the bartender have such a big role? The later half of the game is like a comedy show, with bad acting (except for Katherine/Catherine and Erica).

And what you described as "horror" is nowhere near what I expected. When the game starts off and blood is dripping down Atlus-logo, you ought to expect more crazy stuff than this. This didn't give me anything from monster design to overall atmosphere (because of the storyline taking a comedy turn somewhere in the game).
JWong said:

Not Silent Hill-horror, but I wanted Catherine to at least try to reach half the creepy atmosphere of SH.

You don't need to use the dpad, but it works perfectly fine for me. I use the stick for the walking around portions.

I'm on the verge of quitting this game entirely. I'm on what I assume is the last level and it's not that I'm stuck it's just that I'm completely unhappy with how the plot has unfolded.

From the beginning I decided that my first play-through would be to go after Catherine. Every single text that came my way and decision I showed interest in Catherine and disdain for Katherine. The beginning of the plot lead me to believe that my decisions were effect on the plot. But as the game developed in day's 6-7 Vincent decided that it was the right thing to go back to Katherine even though my decisions acted towards the contrary.

And now in the final day dream Katherine ended up killing Catherine and now I have to escort Katherine up to the top being chased by Catherine as if that had been my decision. I just want to know if there is any reason to stick out the rest of the game at this point since as a first time player it feels like all my decisions have been ignored.

Keep playing, I can't fully explain it to you without spoiling things, but your decisions have not been ignored. All I can say is keep playing and you'll see.

Also, that's not the last level

Just beat the first level of Stage 4, "Inquisition." Thus concludes my first sitting with the game... WOW! I love everything about the game so far. The puzzle stages are great. Talking with the sheep on the landings is great. The confessionals are great. Everything you can do at The Stray Sheep is great. The moral choices -- and they are many, and they are nuanced -- are great. The cutscenes are great. The soundtrack is great (WOW at the remix of Bach's Little Fugue in G Minor). Hell, even the title screen is a work of art. Just an amazing game, through and through.

Oh, and the SYMBOLISM! It's everywhere, absolutely everywhere; this is one of the most densely layered allegories I've ever seen in gaming. I love the bit where the
reporter mentions having "a cross to bear"
, because in the confessional you see
a painting of Jesus' crucifixion with a sheep at the base of the cross
. Everything has meaning, and everything is connected. Just brilliant on so many levels. :)

I can't wait to play more. My GotY contender so far. :)

I can understand the frustration that many have for this game as it requires an amount of tolerance for both types of gameplay offered. I think that how polarizing the game is sort of proof of it's brilliance. I hope Atlus keeps this Golden Theatre series going because this is probably my favorite game of all year so far.

Obelisk is the hardest one because of all of the random factors involved. Good luck!

What have you ever wanted to gain from a game other than enjoyment, better eye-hand coordination, and possibly some great music and cool stories (which, by the way, Catherine has all of)?
