Catherine |OT| Sheep, Matrimony, Terror - Love Is Gone

johnsmith

remember me
The sequel will absolutely not have Vincent in it again. It'll have as much connection to the original as P3 did to P4, which was none, except for the school trip.

I hope Atlus keeps this Golden Theatre series going because this is probably my favorite game of all year so far.
I think you mean Golden Playhouse, but I agree, and while I'm only up through 4-1 so far, I was actually thinking that regardless of what happens in this particular game's story (Catherine), the narrative device of Midnight Venus and the Golden Playhouse would be an excellent way to frame other, completely-unrelated-but-thematically-consistent entries in a "franchise" of sorts. Just like how Catherine opens with the show-within-the-show that is Golden Playhouse, so too could a "sequel," even if said sequel has none of the characters or settings from Catherine. You would still have Midnight Venus introducing you, the audience, to a strange new tale of wonder and horror, and then the game itself would have the amazing action-puzzle/social simulator structure that is the game's DNA. And, of course, the same fresh style and sense of "warmth" radiating from every character and environ in Catherine. They could also have even more all-new arrangements of public domain orchestral classics. :)

To be honest, I'd rather they use it as an opportunity to explore other gameplay types, instead of restricting it to only the kind of puzzles seen here (such as an adventure title, or perhaps an action RPG in the vein of Raidou Kuzunoha), while maintaining social elements, but the idea of new stories under the Golden Playhouse umbrella as a means of creating sequels instead of remaking the same game over and over sounds interesting.

What have you ever wanted to gain from a game other than enjoyment, better eye-hand coordination, and possibly some great music and cool stories (which, by the way, Catherine has all of)?
Read? I just said I got none of that in this game except for some good music (should've been more original songs in it though).

A sequel could have its own iconic one-word title (well, it doesn't have to be one word), and then it could say on the box, "A Golden Playhouse title" and "Spiritual successor to Catherine." Then the game itself would boot up with the same cartoon montage and Midnight Venus intro as Catherine. I definitely think making any Catherine sequels like new "seasons" of the Golden Playhouse TV show is the way to go. (But I reserve the right to revise my opinion once I see how Catherine's story concludes!)

As for the gameplay, I wouldn't be opposed to new gameplay types, but I would welcome refining and expanding upon the puzzle component. Then again, climbing blocks might not make sense with the sequel's story...

...and I will say that where story is concerned, I'd rather a sequel be self-contained, with its own fresh ideas and iconic imagery. So in other words, leave the sheep in Catherine. Maybe a sequel could feature, oh, I don't know... Frog-men or something. :)

But the puzzles, the socializing, the character-building, the anime/in-engine blend, the style, the classical pieces (plenty more in public domain, ripe for rearrangin'!), the use of symbolism, the sense of mystery, etc, should all remain intact.

Since this is my first Atlus game (at least, that I can remember offhand), I have no attachment to Persona, and I'm hoping they give us more Golden Playhouse titles sooner rather than later. :)

Beat the game over the weekend. Great game! Babel is HARD man.

Also, anyone else thinks Katherine is one fucking oversensitive harpy?
She can never take a joke and oscillates between overly concerned and pissed off. Also, once she finds out she's not pregnant she dumps Vincent like a bad habit. While Vincent certainly isn't a saint by any measure, doesn't that show that she was only going to marry him because she was carrying his seed? I mean, she didn't even have evidence that he was cheating!

Well, to her defense he literally said
he was cheating on her when she asked

Anyway, what a great and unique game this was. Just beat the game and got the
wedding
ending with Katherine. Normal difficulty was alright all around. It certainly was a pain in the ass from time to time, though it wasn't nearly as bad as I've heard. I am looking forward to a sequel. In the mean time, I still have to side with Catherine.

Man pacing on this game in the latter half is incredibly brutal. Had an extremely tough time getting through Level 7, watched like 30 minutes (at least) of non interactive cutscenes, only to find that the game wasn't yet over. Every time this game switches to FMV, I find myself asking why. Especially the "evil" ending I got. Game is going back to gamefly.

If
9-5
on normal is hard for you, then what more in hard mode? :)

Well, it was a pain, frustrating for a short period of time, but not really hard... hard is on a whole other level.

I just got the gold prize for stage 7 tonight. Stage 7 was fun! Lots of clever puzzles, and that boss was so intimidating at first, I thought I couldn't do it... but I was forgetting my strategy of taking it just one section at a time. When breaking the boss stage down into its component parts, it was actually pretty easy despite it having a few hard to figure out puzzles.

So I went through trying to get the neutral endings, but I ended up with the freedom/bad whatever endings again. Are the questions before stages the only thing that matter? I don't know what threw me off, but if it's just those questions, I could divide it up evenly next time I try.

Hahaha, predictable bait indeed.

Anyone complaining about pacing needs to play Persona 4, takes like three hours before you have full control over your character, longest intro scenes ever

Also, another problem is if a sequel would be about relationships and love.

They pretty much covered everything about relationships in Catherine
except the hardships of being gay (erica doesn't count)
.

Pretty much every NPC in this game
was involved in a romantic relationship of some type
so all types were covered. If the second game were about relationships, would it not be the just the same game all over again?

Hmmm...but Catherine is a game that covers mature themes other games would be afraid of crossing, so what would a good theme for a sequel be?

At least it's interesting. Well, it was for me.

Having control doesn't always make it better. Kingdom Hearts II had a three-hour long intro as well and you controlled the character. It sucked anyway.

I'm sure Atlus could find a way to make a whole new game with new implementations of similar ideas.

Also,
that would be cool, but if they can't even give us a gay option in Persona, I'm not so sure they'd do a whole game about it. But like I said, I would personally love that (and them if they did it). I do know about that bit in Innocent Sin, though...but it's no Kanji

Jeez, it's crazy how easy the game is on easy after playing through the game on normal. Went from night 3 to the end of 7 in less than 2 hours and no floor really gave me any trouble, not even 6-3 and 7-4 which were rage inducing the first time around for me.

Yeah I got really far in that game and then my PS3 YLOD'd and I lost my save. Since then I've had a few attempts to start over and haven't made it through the intro part.

FFXIII is even worse. 30 hours before you get out of the intro tutorial... 8D

Yea that had some shitty pacing and repetitive boring gameplay as well.

Damn, did we play the same game? P4 was an incredibly fun game.

Parts of the game are fun. I find the fusing of Personas sorta interesting but I find the social stuff, which is 50% of the game, incredibly tedious and boring. The same goes for Catherine. It's undercooked, dramatically simple in implementation. It just feels like a poorly written choose your own adventure with about 3 static environments and a J-pop EP on repeat. I don't even think I had much fun with combat in Persona 4...with Catherine I can honestly say that there were times where I really felt like I was having fun with the puzzle stuff. In the end, for all the praise people are giving for the premise and "deep relationship themes" the game is silly. It's unsubtle and heavy handed with the themes and ends up (at least in my play through) being a game that panders to it's anime audience.

What a game. Just, wow.

And not in a positive way btw.
The game's story makes sense when you get to the end. That's what I meant.

If you hate the game so much, i'm curious why you're still playing it judging from your recent posts. Don't force it.

So can someone explain this to me, is it an adventure game with a ton of mini-games? I had read something suggesting this was some bizarre mini game thing. I read the OP, but I still don't get the game.

This game is brilliant.

I was worried because the demo didn't connect with me, but after a weekend consumed by this game, I can say that Atlus has done it again. First, I love how the game stays true to the design sensibilities of the folks behind SMT and Persona. The graphics remind me of a high def SMT Nocturne/DDS at times. The whole atmosphere is very Persona, actually, well.. without the Personas -- protagonist socializes during the day, climbs a supernatural tower at night.

But aside from how happy I was to be playing an honest to god HD title by the folks behind my favorite RPG franchise (SMT), it's that goddamn gameplay that got me. This game is ridiculously addictive. I have sat down to play this in three sessions.. each time I've clocked in six hours. I never do that. I usually switch a game off after two, three hours max. But six hours?? And the kicker is, I didn't even notice how long I was playing. I see blocks when I close my eyes, and hear "edge!" when I walk in the street.

I'm playing the game on normal, and aside from a couple of stages
mech baby and katherine escort mission
, I've found the whole thing pretty fair and not nearly as tough as people make it out to be. Sure, I've died an average of 15 times a stage, but with every death came new knowledge of what I have to do to win.

Biggest surprise of 2011 for me.. Thought I would absolutely hate this game. The complete opposite is true.

Yeah, I definitely forgot what we were talking about :D But yeah it made sense in the end.

I'm making good progress in getting gold trophies in Hard mode. After I get every ending, I think I'll go back to Persona 4, and once I'm done with that I'll go back to Catherine to beat the Babel stages. I'm definitely going to get the platinum trophy for this.

It's a puzzle game where you move blocks around to climb a tower that is constantly collapsing underneath your feet. It's a lot like intelligent cube, if you've ever played that. Each stage introduces new blocks (exploding, ice, etc.) or challenges that you have to figure out how to work around in order to make it to the top.

The other part of the game has you walking around a bar and talking to folks and exchanging texts with the K/Catherines.

It's like playing through a comedy/horror anime, where the "game" parts are the block puzzles (which are fun once you wrap your head around the physics of the world).

Oh okay, I haven't had a ton of time to scour the PS Store like I normally do.

During the night you play the main 'game' I guess you could say, which revolves around the player pushing blocks to reach the top of a structure. Its a puzzle game.

During the day you watch animated or in engine cut scene followed by a trip to he bar. At the bar you can talk and drink. So short answer, no, its not a ton of mini-games. You'd be surprised how much you can get out of this game. First play through for me on easy was over 10hrs at least without touching some stuff.

But I don't hate the game! Don't get that impression from me... I just said I had such high expectations that I ended up disappointed. It 's not a bad game at all, just a "good" game.
