Charlotte anime |OT| 5 Seconds in heaven; show me your power

When the episode started and they talked about the
collapse ability and psycho box cutter girl gave imouto that evil look, I thought that she was the one with the power, not the sister. And I didn't interpret collapse as actually making things break but making people fall sick and stuff. That made sense in my mind as to why the sister was sick. Guess not. And I wonder who that duo with the blue haired glasses guy in the car and the orange haired girl who said she was too late is. And I wonder why the eternally soaked guy showed up at the end.

EP 05
Sorry writers, but you still didn't manage to make me care about Imouto. Her classmates
were obviously sketchy, and now we know that there's some kind of rival group that targets kids with powers, and whatever they're affiliated with gives them the status to walk into the sister's school unimpeded.

I can't say I was expecting the final scene before the credits or what came after that, though. Hopefully this change of pace leads into a more compelling story than what we've been getting so far.

@Horizon: That couldn't have been the case because
the girl was at school at the time the collaborator pinpointed the next location the team had to investigate.

I always thought the group left right after the pinpoint guy showed up but I guess this time they left at the end of the school day.

Because of that, I thought that if those kids were already at the sister's room before them, then it might've meant
psycho girl was the one
since it would mean they skipped class to meet the sister.

Guess not lol.

There's no way they could kill off
Yuu or Nao
right now though. My guess is
teleportation dude saves Yuu, but gets caught up in it.Imouto status is also unknown, although, it's easy to say she is toast as of right now. Dammit, still mad several hours later, uugghh.

I'm just going to copy my reaction from the AnimeGaf thread

Charlotte 6
WTF... I had a bad feeling shit was about to go down, but whyyyy :'(
..I actually have a sister about Aymui's age, so that actually hit me hard. I feel like I need to go take a walk now.

Yeah, that was brutal. I was expecting it was just going to be a simple cold which got better... maybe she got a power from it and they would move on. But I never expected it to turn into a full on crazy girl chases Ayumi with a box cutter, then forces her power to go off, thus killing her and potentially her brother.

Part of me is still hoping that they are alive; that Jojiro teleported to save Yuu and Ayumi was saved... or at worst she is captured by the scientists and this turns into a 'save her before its too late' type of plot.
Though, the other part of me is saying that she is either dead, or if it does turn into a 'save her before its too late' type of plot, it will be too late :(

Lol I couldn't stop laughing my ass of at the end. Everything was so damn predictable. I really wanted to like it, but it felt like everything people have been predicting was playing out right in front of my eyes. The conflict with the love triangle coming out of nowhere and
suddenly turning into a middle schooler trying to murder someone over a crush was just weird and out of place though
...

So yeah, at least the show is going somewhere now. This is one of those situations where I think Jun Maeda completely failed to properly balance this idea of "comedic, slice-of-life first half" with a "dramatic second half." The first half didn't get me invested in these characters, and the change felt too sudden. I can't help but feel the past few episodes were completely pointless. I liked the first couple of episodes, because it was just starting to introduce the characters and get the plot moving. Then it stagnated, going on with these random people's superpowers who had no real purpose to the story. They even failed to use these episodes to further develop the main characters. If anything, this episode should have happened a long time ago so that the story could have started going much sooner. The post credits part kinda hit me, but it didn't really feel all that sad.

It's funny, because Jun Maeda repeatedly said that he acknowledged the mistakes with angel beats and wanted to fix those issues with Charlotte, but in his attempt to fix it he made it even worse because 5 episodes of "pizza sauce" isn't going to give us enough insight into these characters, and now you've got even less episodes for the rest of the story. Angel beats was able to pull people in from the very first episode, yet ultimately failed to deliver a satisfying story because the characters didn't get fleshed out well enough. Charlotte so far hasn't done either, instead opting to make people wait until the 6th episode to pull them in. Maybe it would have been better if you could marathon the entire show in a short period of time.

I loved the credits music, and hopefully the show gets more exciting from this point on. I think the show can still get very good going forward from here, so I'm definitely feeling more optimistic about it right now, even if my post doesn't come across that way. My expectations going into this show were probably a little too high considering how much I've liked all of Key's precious stories. I'm still hoping we get a second season, even if it's split, because I don't know how they're going to give us the rest of the story without making it feel rushed. There's a lot of interesting stuff they could do with the show. I still feel like the ending for this episode will serve only as a catalyst for moving Yuu forward into the bigger picture.

On a side note, there's a new Zhiend song on youtube

We'll see how they move this forward from here. I don't think they would kill off the MC already, so.. Well, plus it looks like he was really pushing the Yuu x Nao possible romance, so.. They gotta live for now.

My only complaint with Angel Beats was the way they handled the Kanaeda x MC relationship. They waited until the last episode to really explore those feelings and while it was a great scene, they could have played it off more. Well, that and we never did get to see A gel play the piano, lol.

I wont lie, I was pretty down on this show. It just wasn't doing it for me. But after watching episode 6 this morning I am fully on board. Can't wait for next Saturday.

Pulled from the Anime Thread; thanks for posting.....

That clears some things up, like Yuu still being alive, I kinda wonder what's going to happen. Especially with some of those creepy scenes in the preview.

Man that scene with the guy and the knife looks so grim, I guess Yuu is going to take control of him and stab himself in the eye, damn that's brutal.

no image of
imouto though, also teleport guy was missing
from all the previews.... Which one of them
died or is in critical condition, did teleport guy really save Yuu. Obviously imouto is the dead one, but did telport guy die too, or was he the one captured?
?

Teleport guy is in the preview, 3 seconds in, he's standing next to Yusarin.

Wouldn't be surprised if
teleport guy died and lil sis corpse wasn't found yet but presumed dead.
It still angers me though thinking about episode 6. Watching episode 7 is gonna be a bit difficult.

You're right, I thought that was Yuu but looking closer he's not.

Imouto is Dead. DEAD!!!

Just let the despair take control of you, nothing is going to save her.

STOP!

Those Yuu scenes with tears flowing were just plain bad.... Maybe him harassing the doctor was him
trying to find out how she was doing, could she be int he hospital with him?

Don't worry, Jun Maeda has some supernatural twist that will bring her back up his sleeve.

Yusarin is suddenly able to channel his sister

I doubt it, he himself was in the hospital and Yuu probably also was the shadow looking at the bloody rubble, the sister probably is under the rubble, dead.

I think Yuu will probably go into some sort of rage mode, see my theory a few posts above.

Guys there is an obvious "time loop" sentence in the opening which isn't that hard to miss. Also all the other powers are mentioned in the opening so far... so Imouto will come back by traveling through time as soon as they realize that the comet Charlotte will destroy earth. The gangs mission will be to find the time travel user.

Only the imouto's power can stop the comet.

Because she can break it with her powers, it all checks out.

I kinda theorycrafted something like that a while ago, maybe Charlotte is the person that can time travel.

Altough if I could choose between the end of the world or the sister being alive I'd choose the former.

Only the imouto's power can stop the comet.

Teleport guy should just dash into it to change it's course lol.

Yeah Charlotte could be that one girl in the opening. It will be something like that. Feels a bit like Punch Line in that regard lol.

So here is my theory:

- Next episode everyone will be sad blabla
- Yuu will wreck some shit with his power
- Suddenly comet twist
- The other gang were the old super power hunter (guy with glasses, Yuus brother that he forgot, long haired water guy, Naos brother)
- they have to find Charlotte (girl in the opening) to travel back in time and save Imouto and get more Pizza Sauce
- Imouto works her powers on the incoming comet
- ???
- It doesn't work
- Pizza sauce resolves everything

Something like that.

Edit: Also Nao doesn't have the ability to make her invisible to one person. She is able to manipulate wills. :P

They'll create a giant swimming pool of pizza sauce to soften the impact of the meteor.

Edit: Anyone knows what Yuu said in the preview?

All this pizza sauce talk.

I really have no idea how this will all play out, but I'm sure it is just starting to get crazy now...

Still no signs of pushing the Yuu x Nao combo though, she has to help him..

FUCK, so
imouto is dead, but Yuu lives
.... uuggh, plus the telescope is out now...

You're right, I thought that was Yuu but looking closer he's not.

What I'm thinking is that Imouto is alive, but was captured by Scientists. Everybody else thinks that she is dead, but near the end of the season the group will find out the truth and it will be a mad dash to try and save her before its too late. I'm also thinking that those people they "helped" during the first half weren't actually one-time characters and they will tie into the rescue arc.

We can only hope this to be true...

Essentually, it's one of the thoeries out there that:

In OP we see many words which represent superpowers (collapse, telepathy and… time leap).
What if someone has gained this ability and used it already? A person from future who know about events in ep 6 and wanted to prevent them from happening?

I feel like the theory stated above by Mendorx is more likely.

Anyway, what are all the powers supposed to be, I can't read half of them.

Who is "Looting"?

This one, huh? I removed the Pizza Sauce comments, lol.

Yeah, I'm placing my bets on that, at least something along those lines.

Anyhow, I rewatched the OP a few times, and the letters all appear super quickly so I still couldn't spot them, something more obvious that I thought was cute is this

gBPyL3S.png

It's Zhiend!

There's also this screenshot which was some heavy foreshadowing, I mean, for those who didn't saw the twist coming.

Also indicates something related to time, huzzah!

Also I thought the whole time that the other girl had the power of "collapse" and that is why Ayumi suddenly became ill. I assumed she would get worse and just physically collapse into a coma or something.

I only recently started to watch anime and decided to check this out because I saw this very thread on GAF and that latest episode hit me right in the feels so thanks guys ;_;

I actually really like all the characters and I think this is the only anime where I can actually say that and mean it. Admittedly I haven't watched a huge amount, but still. I can't wait for the next episode!

I expected the same at first with how the show kept showing us her slightly creepy face whenever it could, but there's the issue of when the collaborator visits the club to pinpoint where the next kid with powers is supposed to be. If that happens after classes, then the MC's sister's classmates might've had enough time to be at her house at the time but I believe that doesn't happen after class, which would mean that imouto would be the only character in the condos at the time (which is further reinforced by the main cast), and that the power had to belong to her.

Then there was that dream, even though you might've been able to interpret it as some weird way of experiencing the collapse power as it was being used against her.

Welcome; I'm glad you're enjoying the anime. Thsi is actually a really tough anime to have as your first since it is written by Jun Maeda, who is pretty much the master of despair. He loves to kill of or make characters sick and create the "feels" for this one he is a bastard for what he did... Tomorrow should be pretty damn intense.

Thanks! Bah, I've had enough of that with ASOIAF. I knew next to nothing about this going in so I was fully expecting it to continue in the same vein as the previous 5 episodes haha. I'm hooked anyway :P

Yeah, I also love all the characters, I'm digging the interaction between Yuu and Nao, Yusarins double personalty is also excecuted well. I mean, it's not anything groundbreaking or something but since it's done neatly I can't complain.

The teleporting friend is the weakest of the bunch though, he pulls through sometimes with scenes like that bit in the river but he's mostly using this one gag about glossing over Yusarin, maybe it's because I don't like those comic relief characters.

Anyhow, Jun Maeda said that the task of the first half was supposed to be character interaction/exposition and he's done a good job at that in my opinion, I hope that he'll also deliver now that we're moving into the second act.
