cheap HDtv

Well, I'd like to have something I can get at a B&M, If I can nab an HDTV by this weekend, I think I'll just cancel my Wii preorder and throw it towards a 360. :p

I'm leaning towards that quality Westing House, the model number that starts with L, it's 699.99 at the moment at Best Buy, 32 inch.

I'd like to get a Wii eventually, but with the things I'd have to buy, and no online at launch, and the fact that Im pretty much buying a GC game and a DS game for my launch titles... meh.

I really want a 360 badly, and this stupid TV is all that's holding me back.

I really sat on my 360 purchase for awhile and I can't suggest it enough. It's an incredibly thoughtful product that sits right at home on a shiny new HD Set. I was shocked at how... un-Microsoft, how un-console the whole expirence it. DO IT.

Samsung 26"

I just got the 32-inch version..and it's incredible. Videogames on composite look nice enough on it, 480p looks amazing on both, movies and videogames, 720p haven't tried it, but soon will when I get a 360.

What is going on at argos, its like a fricken HDTV fire sale. Get in quick someone down there has gone nuts.

I've tried looking for the response time but had no luck, Judging by TV's of this price and type its 8ms but......

The Samsung is back at £250 now, the only differences I can see so far is the 250 brightness and 450:1 contrast ratio on the cheaper one (samsung is at 300 and 700:1) - anyone comment on what kind of difference thatll be?

So how does standard TV & DVD playback look on the Samsung? Also, how do videos off your computer look? Say like a 640x480 movie? Also, can they display PAL/NTSC images?

I'm going to wauit until the day after Christmas and hope Future Shop has a bunch of deals on HDTV, until then it's SDTV for me :(

I've got a minitor question however. I have an Impression LCD minitor and was wondering what I'd need to hook it up to a 360. Only things I can plug into it (besides where I connect it to the computer and an electrical outlet) are the two identical...holes, sorry don't know the proper name for them.

Well I have to say, the picture quality on my TV is pretty awesome. I know it's not full 1080i... but it sure looks great. GC titles in 480p look absolutely amazing (16:9 mode or not). Wow. FF:CC looks absolutely splendiferous. Same with FZeroGX and BKII.

Just my Personal opinion but I would stay away from those Westinghouses, I am hearing ALOT of bad stories about what they are doing to make them stand outon the sales floor(overdriving components), go with the Syntax:Olevia brand, they are about the same price or take a Look at the Viewsonics, a few bucks more but Viewsonic is solid.

ok haven't really got time to read through this whole thread ... but what is the current best LCD monitor out there for use with an external source like ps3 here.

needs hdmi i guess and 1to 1 mapping so that the picture will scale ... ?

Oh, Im not getting the Black Friday one, just the normal 32'er that's aside from them. It's not a killer sale, but the tv has really good reivews.

Up to 1080i.
HDMI.

Around $400.

They actually carry this model at STAPLES for about $449 iirc. So if anyone wants to try it before you buy it, look there first. It seems like a great set for the price.

BTW, I've been very happy with my Sceptre so far. I'd recommend it too.

Pretty good price. I got it for roughly the same amount with shipping.

can anyone in australia point me to a good (for what i can afford anyway) TV in the range of $500-900 AUS? all i really want is component and widescreen, LCD would be nice too i guess. i don't care about size as long as its 51cm or higher. alot of the ones listed i can't find where i live (adelaide) or are obviously more expensive and out of my price range.

any australian's that can help?

Quick question; I wanna hook my PC up to my TV too, what cable do I need for it? RGB or something? I have no idea about any of these cables.

Guys the black friday ads have hit for best buy and they have some awesome deals. They have the 32inch 720p lcd from Westinhouse for 480$ and they will have at least 15 per store. They also have a 42inch 720p from westinghouse for 999$ minnuim of 12 per store. Both are listed on there website if you want to check them out. Also anybody that wants a DLP Best buy will have a 56inch toshiba for 1200$. I think I'm just going to wait in line after I get a Ps3 lol j.j.

Thanks much! Very exciting, never even had a flat or a wide screen before. Just my ol' 27 inch Trinitron thing with S-Video, haha.

Hey, i'm in the same boat, in Sydney. There's some sweet panasonic CRTs that accept 480p that are widescreen. I saw one in Melbourne for $500, but couldn't get it up here...

GODDAMN IT I'M CONFLICTED!

Before the Black Friday stuff, I had my eyes set on this 32" Westinghouse HDTV...regular price is $899, but i've seen it go down to $849, $799, and finally $699(2 weeks ago...I couldn't afford it then)...then it went back up to regular price, then a crappy $853, now it's back down to $699 this week and I can buy that bitch RIGHT NOW !

Then comes the BF ad leaks, and as soon as i saw an alternate Westinghouse 32" HDTV, regular price $799 for a mindblowing $479 I was so set! But info on it is scarce and some comments on the AVS forums haven't been flattering at all. I want a great deal, but I don't want a lemon!

So now i'm considering Circuit City's BF deal, $499 for the Olevia 32" HDTV. It also helps that Circuit City is closer to me than Best Buy. So this seems like a pretty good choice right? I can't seem to find any info on input/output options...does it have VGA input? Number of component/svideo/composite inputs? Refresh rate? 1600:1 contrast ratio sounds great too, but I hope it isn't an artificially inflated rating. Any info on the above stats? Thanks a lot!

Keep in mind that unless you camp out the night before, BF deals are usually just a lure to get you in the store and buying something else. By the time any normal person arrives most of the "deals" are gone.

Yep I know...this will be my 3rd Black Friday outting...though I'll definitely be getting there my earliest this year(i've got my fold up chair ready to sling over my shoulder and prepare for a long sitting).

Basically I just want an HDTV this BF...i've been saving for what seems like forever.

I just hate out complicated it is, even with all of the research i've been doing. If BB had the 32w6 for $479, i'd definitely go for that...but it appears that the BF sale model is some kind of one-off model made just for black friday, and feedback has been bad.

As soon as I can get some good feedback on the Olevia and detailed input/output/refresh rate specs, i'm good to go.

How much better would 480p look on a CRT compared to an LCD that was 720p native? I still can't decide on a cheap HDTV set.

The bestbuy BF ad has been taken down.

Is their anywhere I can find a summary of all the BF HD deals? If nothing sparks my interest I'll end up with the 19inch Samsung monitor that has been posted throughout this thread.

Great deal at Circuit City for an HD projector (no 1080p obviously)...

$699, no rebate

Needs an additional adapter ($40 I think) for component input.

What does the resolution mean, like when it says 1366x768? Does that just tell you if it can do 720p or 1080i or whatever

That particular resolution means it will have to do some scaling no matter what mode you play in. So if you're wanting 1280x720, it will stretch it to fill all 1366x768 pixels - which can be unfavorable (compared to native 1280x720). But most folks don't seem to mind it too much, if you believe message boards.

So it would be better to get a set that is already at 1280?

So I've been told. That's why I went with this set instead of another. It doesn't accept 1080i (as far as I can tell - never got to test that), but 720p looks really awesome and bang on.

Oh damn. That's pretty nice. I don't really care about 1080i to be honest, I just want something for my college dorm. That price is right too, pretty perfect for Christmas. Do you know if the Wii would look good if hooked up with component cables to that set?

Personally, I don't think the difference is at all noticable enough to warrant looking for a display that's native 1280x720. The vast majority of LCD TVs (not necessarily "LCD displays" or monitors) are 1366 - I wouldn't pass up a set that has other nice features, is a good price, etc just because it's not native 1280x720.

Gotcha. Basically, I'm looking for an LCD between 20-27 inches and under $500 for my college dorm that handles 480p images very well. 1080i would be fantastic but I don't need it.

Dude those Black Friday models aren't STANDARD models, I didn't even know that Olevia MADE a 2 series, I mean 99% of the Olevia models sold are either the 3 or 5 series(same except the 5 series has built in HD tuners) I mean maybe they are like seconds or rejects or something? And that Westy is a one off for black friday. I wouldn't touch em'

Well unlike the Westinghouse, the BF Olevia model is actually on the website. As far as I can tell, the only difference between the 2 series and the 5 series of the same size is the placement of the speakers, and universal remote, as seen by this comparison,

I went to the Circuit City at Atlantic Terminal Mall in Brooklyn, NY today and didn't see it on display and asked a coupld of the workers and they said it's not up because it's a black friday deal. So if anything, if i'm not satisfied, I'll just return it.

Btw, there are people already lined up for the PS3!!!!! This isn't even a midnight opening Circuit City...they had their chairs and everything.

It really is a great TV for the price (I have th 5 series). I think I'm going to pick that one up as well come BF, I can't pass up a good deal, unless there are some 1080p displays going for a great price.

That's good to hear...it's my first HDTV so i'm really excited...I already got my upconverting DVD player...HDMI cable is on the way, as are component cables for my HD cable box which i'll be getting soon. I know it won't be a high-end BRAVIA or anything, but I just hope for a good clean picture. I'm upgrading from a 5 year old 25" Samsung with s-video as the highest quality input, so it should be a nice upgrade.

Okay, I'm really interested in copping one of those 5-series 32" Olevia (532H) sets for my bedroom. But I see they are having BF deal for their 2-series set. My question, is why did they create a 2-series set (232V), yet the 5-series set features IDENTICAL specs (built in tuner, HDMI, etc)?

This doesn't make sense to me, you can peep it here: http://www.olevia.com/jsp/products/compare.jsp?pidFrom=232v&pidTo=532H

The only difference between those two sets on paper are the speaker placements, the lack of the remote for the 2-series, and the warranty. But really, they're basically one in the same.

The BF deal for the 2-series is $499. Which looks like a steal, but I'm worried about buying a set that's created just for BF, know what I mean? Maybe they have the same specs on paper, but in reality the quality and build of the set is well below that of the 5-series... What do you guys think?

EDIT: WOW... I didn't see that post just a few posts above mine... :lol. i feel dumb now...
