cheap HDtv

^^

It makes perfect sense once you realize that there are only a few panel manufacturers, and the higher resolution panels are too expensive to make a profit off of.

So how does 720p display on 1366x768 sets? Does it do 720p and then stretch the screen to fill the rest or does it just letterbox the extra pixels?

I had a question about the Samsung 940MW. I really want to get one, but how good do systems plugged in through composite look? I'm not talking the current and next-gen systems, I'm wondering how good a NES and Genesis would look through it, because all of my other older systems I can use S-Video, and I would use component for my PS2/GCN/XBX. I hope it isn't a stupid question, but I want to know. I'm not expecting anything crazy, I just want it look as good as a normal TV would.

When sizes are given, are they measured diagonally, or by length?

For example, the 22 inch Samsung monitor, is probably not big enough to replace my 30 inch Standard tv?

Ms is only delivering the HD Cable with the 5 component jacks isn't??
Is there also a DVI// HDMI cable availiable for 360?

I have also the VGA cable, on a VGA monitor the colors are not that bright..
I see more and more HDTV's with only HDMI and DVI...how to connect a 360 on those machines??

So then why not have them at 1280x720 native? Fewer pixels to pay for and, I imagine, a sharper picture most of the time due to no awful scaling!

I still say for $699 the 32" Vizio at Costco is a great deal at that price, other people on this board have it and really like the way it performs ( 360 thru VGA looks great), either that or the 32" Westinghouse at Best Buy if its still in stock......under 800 FTW!

Yeah, I just got that Vizio, and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. Plus, with Costco's return policy, you're covered....forever.

Good idea!

I finally decided to go with the Olevia 323v at 400 bucks. Can't beat the price for that feature set.

I'll let you guys know how it is later this week (hopefully).

You should have gone with that SCEPTRE 27" @ newegg for $499. 720p native and bigger screen for only $100 more.

Well I'm finally entering the HD era. Welcome me. It's not the best set in the world, but the Sony KV-30HS420 got EviLore's approval, even if it is "too small". :P

Nice set (I got my parents the 34" version), but where the heck did you find one? The only Sony CRTs left were the 34" ones (XBR970 specifically) I thought.

A store I know of "found" a bunch of them in their warehouse. Cue Fire Sale.

Me = Happy

I have this and it works great. I have my SNES hooked up via S-Video, the computer hooked up via VGA (my card doesn't support DVI), and the PS2 is sometimes hooked up via component. I love the thing to death but PS2 on LCD looks like crap.

I do enjoy being able to play Mario Kart on the PIP thing while I'm browsing GAF.

Isn't that the same monitor as the one on top of the previous page? The Okami picture looks great...

I have that exact same set. Bought it back in February. Other than needing a little calibration when I bought it, it has been great. Highly recommended. Howver, make sure you have someone with a strong back to help you move it in.

Picking it up? Better take couple of friends and a truck! That box is huge and f'n heavy!:lol

It's only 70kg. I can lift 40kg on my own easily. So this shouldn't be so bad. :P

The box IS big though. That's honestly more of a problem than the weight.

So there's not much ghosting with this monitor for older stuff or in general? Why does the PS2 look bad on it?

So why is it the Okami picture seems really crisp, but PS2 games supposedly look bad on LCD's? I'm really confused and not too educated on this subject.

Heres a question...

Is now the best time to buy, right before the holidays where we'll be seeing sales/discounts, or AFTER the holidays, when retailers drop prices to get rid of excess 2006stock?

Whens the best time to buy new, gents?

It depends on what you want, honestly. Do you have a preference for brand or model?

I own the 27" olevia(327v) fantastic television very sharp, nice look/features/price and the auto size seems to do a good job on turning 480 content into widescreen. I think the Viewsonic is a tad better Tv but more bucks(about 100) and as far as I know Sepeter (Was?) a high end computer monitor brand, although at those prices, maybe it's a Westinghouse deal, and someone bought the rights to the Name.

I also own the Samsung 940mw. Gamecube through RGB scart looks alright, some jaggies but that might be because of the scart cable(no component for europe :( ) iBook looks hot too

Before anyone asks for pictures I tried and failed :( . I suck at taking pictures.

One question for fellow Gaffers, What are your thoughts of GLASS on the front of LCD Tv's, My Olevia doesn't have glass and I'm NOT sure I would want it with the added wieght it sort of defeats the purpose of an LCD, thin/weight savings. I kick the shit out of my IBM thinkpads screen and it's one of the "soft" screens, clean it with a little windex and it's fine? Any thoughts?

Windex huh? Ever look at your screen without it on? It's a mess I'm sure.

Can someone explain why 1366 by 768?
I've read several explanations, but none seemed to be very convincing to me.

Also
I am in th emarket for an HDTV.

I would PREFER 1080p with DVI and HDMI (and HDCP on both).
Size is not my biggest concern.
I DEMAND it has a good scalar or lets me tell it not to stretch my computer resolution (pixel mapping, 1:1, whatever you want to call it, no overscan over DVI!), and it doesn't introduce lag on games.

I also demand it doesn't force some deinterlacing/pulldown scheme on me that ****s up shit when I'm playing on my NES or something. I also want some choice on whether or not shit is stretched to fit, stretched to fit keeping the aspect ratio, stretched to full scree n keeping the aspect ratio (crops the image), or scaled by an integer multiple, then centered and letterboxed.

Impossible, I know.
So how's that 27" scepter http://www.komodo.com/Products/LCD/Specifications/spec_X27SV-Naga A.htm gonna do me for:

HDCP - not needed, 720p.
1280 by 720p scaling - not needed, native.
480 scaling?
1080p scaling - does it even ACCEPT 1080p? No, right?
Lag on video games?
Deinterlacing?
Pull down?

Edit - looking at that Scepter - I need to be able to output the audio from that pooper to my receiver. Can I do so? It doesn't seem to have any outputs other than earphone and a single (wtf? for a subwoofer?) coaxial audio out.

I currently have the 50' Samsung DLP (Last years model), and honestly I love it.
But I have to give it up, as I'm moving.

My buddy has a 32' inch Samsung LCD in the living room, but he's going to put it in his bedroom when I move in, so we need a new one for the living room.

I'm looking for something around 42 inches.
I don't have a strong brand prefernce, though I am partial to Samsung... but since I already bought that huge TV last year, I'm really not interested in spending a ton again (The DLP cost $2250 1 year ago, split 3 ways, so I paid ~$800 and I got back $550 on it)

So I guess I'm looking to spend around $1500. But I don't know if I should get it now during holiday sales, or wait till Jan-Feb for possible post-Xmas price drops on 2006 models?

Thats an OLD WIVES TALE, the trick is NOT to spray the screen directly, use paper towels(Brawny) and NOT to let the screen dry by itself, you need to "buff" it with clean dry towels till its totally dry, gently of course

The Olevia works better for me for two reasons. First is the size is better for me, as even the Olevia will "barely" fit in my cabinet. Other reason is price, as I was able to get this one with a two year extended warranty cheaper than to buy the scepter without a warranty, no tax as well. Also, I can't find any reviews on the scepter, while the olevia has very positive reviews (buy.com).

Beyond that, I agree. The Sceptre would be the way to go.

it is and it does, but I haven't tried it yet with Okami. I am using some cheap cables as I cannot find the official ones locally, so maybe that's why?

Most of the problem is I can't see the difference between what I'm seeing over component and regular s-video; it doesn't appear to be any better. I had this same problem when I had my cube hooked up via the VGA component cables on a previous monitor - the games didn't look any better.

and yes, I do need my eyes checked. :)

I'm debating between the Olevia and the Scepter.
My current thinking is to get the Olevia because of the cost ($400 at tiger direct).
I'll only be using it for TV, (regular) dvds, and my Wiicube.
I graduate in June (or March if I want), so I should be getting a real job soon.

Neither the Scepter nor the Olevia will satisfy my demands, so I might as well replace the cheaper one a year down the line as opposed to replacing th emore expensive one.
Right?

Edit as for cables - this is my "perceivable quality" scale.
Right = good, Left = Bad.

R--------------C-----S------------Y------V----D----H
RF Composite S-Video Component VGA DVI HDMI

DVI and HDMI are basically indistinguishable, but I put HDMI higher because of it's "features" that may one day possible maybe in the future do something.

Right?

The Olevia is pretty well accepted according to the reviews (check buy.com), but the audio is apparently crappy. So if you get that, you may want to use PC speakers or an actual sound system. We don't know too much about that scepter though, but the specs on it look as good or better.

Whichever one you get, you might want to consider picking up a replacement plan since neither of these are name-brand.

Yeah, I plan on using my receiver.
The Olevia has audio out, yes?

Replacement plan/Warranty? From TigerDirect? Or from Olevia?

Yeah, it has audio out. I suppose you'd want the warranty from TigerDirect, but I'm not sure. I went with buy.com (since they offered two years instead of just one), but there's probably not a lot of difference between the two.

http://www.buy.com/prod/Olevia_323V...000_1_Contrast_Ratio/q/loc/273/202787960.html

btw, as recently as last night TigerDirect had it for 369.99. So it looks like they upped the price this morning.

Hey guys!

I've been browsing this thread for a while but haven't found a solid response to my Q:

I'm in need of an HD widescreen display for Wii + Zelda goodness, and I need it cheap (sub $1,200) and of nice quality. I've got on my sight a nice 32" Aquos...but would that be the best alternative? I've heard some of you say that Vizio is pretty good and quite cheap...what should I do? You are free to recommend any other sets. Thanks in advance.
