cheap HDtv

Since this was just bumped, thanks to everyone who recommended the Samsung 940MW! I got it based off of what I read on this thread, and have been losing sleep the past couple weeks staring at all the pretty graphics.

The 360 through VGA looks amazing. I also have the PS2 running via component, but most games are so lo-res that they look like crap. The newer titles looks nice, though, especially if they have widescreen support; FFXII is really impressive.

My only gripe is that there isn't 1:1 pixel support, but you learn to live with it. No big deal.

If anyone else is on the fence about this monitor, go out and get it. :P

If anyone in the UK is still on the lookout for something cheap, I'd recommend the Samsung 940MW (as seen on page 1). I got one last week and it's really good. I just finished playing Gears of War on my Xbox 360 hooked up through the official VGA cable. The game looked spectacular.

Argos has the 940MW in store now for £230.

Dagon, do you see difference if you connect it via component or VGA cable???
When i connect on a monitor on VGA the colors are not so bright...

Oh FFS I should have waited.

That 32" Westinghouse LTV-32w6 looks really great. I'm mostly interested in something to use to play Wii, with the possibility of ps3 or 360 in a year or so. I see a couple people on the internets complaining of ghosting on that set, especially when gaming. 8ms seems like a pretty low response time to me, are those people being too critical or something?

Also, its native resolution is 768 and not 720, will that negatively affect the video quality or latency of a 720p source? And will 480p look okay?

hey that's my TV! it's pretty good, though at this point i wish i had waited an extra year before buying it.

Holy shit at the 32" Westinghouse. That is an absolute steal. That thing is a bargain even at the $800 or so you can usually buy it for. Those will be gone LONG before the noon cut-off.

It says the Westinghouse 19" accepts 480p/i signals... does that necessarily mean those resolutions will look the same as they would on an SDTV?

No, they're upscaled to the set's native resolution. It accepts the signal, but you're seeing a converted signal.

Speaking of which, which brands of LCD TV's have the best upscaling for when it comes to 480i content?

Good question. I have an Olevia 5 series 32" and it too has a 8ms response time. No ghosting here, I have a Norcent 27" with a 16ms and I get Ghosting (shows up as green) Which is why the Norcent is regulated to my daughter's room and an Xbox media Center.

I am also considering to get a LCD Monitor and a LCD HDTV
The model numbers are for Japan. Not sure if it will be the same in the other places

Thanks. I'm just trying to find a good one for good 480i/p images (getting Zelda next week and I want to play that sucker in widescreen-any suggestions?)

Go with CRT or plasma. I've never heard of a good LCD for SD content, and I'd like to know of one.

For CRT, try to get a Sony. Real heavy, but amazing PQ. Don't get a Toshiba, that's the mistake I made, and I'm playing games in 480p instead of 1080i.

The problem is, Sony discontinued their CRT line. I was insanely lucky to find the TV I am buying, especially for the price. Try and look, but I doubt you'll find any.

Well, I'm trying to get one for Christmas because being in college depletes my funds rather quickly and there's no way I can afford one at the moment, so I'm relying on Christmas, really. I'm looking at around $450-500 at the moment and I don't think I could get a plasma at that price...

Also, the Wii, like the Cube, does progressive scan, correct? What does one need for that?

For that price you should consider this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16889112004

I'll be able to tell you how good it is in a couple days when mine comes in.

About progressive scan: Yes, Wii supports it but you have to buy component cables to use it (which SHOULD be available at launch, at least online).

Great, thanks. I'm really hoping to get one that is decently portable, so I can transport it back and forth from home to college and vice versa. I also want one that'll display older games quite good, especially Wii stuff. Maybe I'm just asking for too much.

Ok, I have zero experience with black friday and bestbuy. How hard is it going to be to grab that 32" Westinghouse? Doorbuster Item? Is this like something that is going to literally sell out in minutes?

Ok, some research shows that for Doorbuster Items they hand out vouchers around 1 hour prior to opening. Sounds like a major campout type of thing. Screw that. :\

OH LORD! That 32 westinghouse is indeed tempting. Correct me if I'm wrong, but a 16:9 32 is roughly the same height as a 26 4:3, yeah? We have this OOOOOLLLLD TV from the 80s with woodpaneling (real, not with plastic grain) that's just enormous even though it's only a 26". Not to mention it's rated at almost 200 Watts. Ugh.

Good idea!

I finally decided to go with the Olevia 323v at 400 bucks. Can't beat the price for that feature set.

I'll let you guys know how it is later this week (hopefully).
let me know how it is when you get it.i'm thinkin bout getting this one too!

can anyone in australia point me to a good (for what i can afford anyway) TV in the range of $500-900 AUS? all i really want is component and widescreen, LCD would be nice too i guess. i don't care about size as long as its 51cm or higher. alot of the ones listed i can't find where i live (adelaide) or are obviously more expensive and out of my price range.

I also have that particular model.

+ Great value.
+ Picture quality is VERY good. I'm using it as a second monitor and the picture is very sharp through VGA.
- You NEED to have a sound system set up. The built in speakers are horrible.
- You have very basic customization options. I wish it had more to play around with. :(

I think Ill be getting this on black friday. Its only 200 bucks with no rebates. Has everything but cable connection, but with comcasts box component is all I need anyway!

I can't stress how important it is not to listen to anything through the TV's speakers... Just keep that in mind.

No hdmi though. :(

I picked this up for $275.00 as a floor model at the local Walmart.

http://tv.rca.com/en-US/ModelDetail.html?MN=HD27F754T&nav=ByTechnology&PC=CRT

I'm running component cables for everything and it looks nice but it's 4:3 and no hdmi.

Still, the price was right and I'm getting a taste of high def(until I unload for a bigger lcd or plasma with hmdi outputs for blu ray)

I'm at FatWallet.com reading about Black Friday tips. Apparently, people start lining up at Best Buys at 7 to 9 PM the previous night.

Crap! There's no way I'll get that LCD. :(

Ok i'm real tempted by this..

http://www.argos.co.uk/ProductDisplayTRK019?partNumber=5292040

I need something for my PC, watching movies (so a 22" would have been ideal), consoles (both last gen and HD) etc.

They don't list the response time on there, which i really need to find out before busting out my wallet.

This going down to $199 on Black friday seems unbelievably good, if best buy did international shipping id be on that instantly. I need more American friends who can send me 'gifts' to avoid VAT raping too.

What is going on at argos, its like a fricken HDTV fire sale. Get in quick someone down there has gone nuts.

I've tried looking for the response time but had no luck, Judging by TV's of this price and type its 8ms but......

I'm interested in this, but I'm still unsure. What exactly can I use it for? Will I be able to use it with the PS3? It says the screen ratio is 16:10, will I be able to use it normally in 16:9? Work with PC? Can I use it to watch TV, if my graphics card a TV tuner thing (think it does)? Anything else I need to know?

Is it really that good? I don't want to spend loads of a HDTV, so this should do fine if everyone seems to think that it's OK.

I was looking up those Westing Houses, the one on sale isn't that quality one, it's another model number that I cant find any reviews of. Just a passing mention on some AV forum that said it looked like shit at Best Buy.

I really want to buy a normal HDTV, not a monitor, built in and all that jazz. I'd like to get one about 27-32 inches, quality 720p, something that'll last awhile for $500-700.

Ooooolevia. I can't push them enough as a great bargin set. I doubt you'll see anything else in your price range that pushes that kind of quality

Well, I'd like to have something I can get at a B&M, If I can nab an HDTV by this weekend, I think I'll just cancel my Wii preorder and throw it towards a 360. :p

I'm leaning towards that quality Westing House, the model number that starts with L, it's 699.99 at the moment at Best Buy, 32 inch.

I'd like to get a Wii eventually, but with the things I'd have to buy, and no online at launch, and the fact that Im pretty much buying a GC game and a DS game for my launch titles... meh.

I really want a 360 badly, and this stupid TV is all that's holding me back.
