Chipotle Will Now Utilize Pre-Shredded Cheese and Already-Chopped Tomatoes

It would be messed up if this was sabotage. As silly as it sounds you can bet they have people looking for signs of it. Nobody better touch my Burrito Boyz

Not trying to attack you, but the fact that they are calling it "Wood Pulp" and literally a quote from the article stating this rather boldly

I'm not against this for any other reason than the texture sensation it leaves on pre-shredded cheese.

Clearly my joke was too nuanced for most people to understand. I was merely taking a jab at Chipotle's non-GMO stance and how there's a noticeable quality difference in freshly shredded vs. pre-shredded cheese.

Always like Qdoba more anyway. There is a new place that has been opening called Joe's, need to check that out.

I dunno about pre-shredded and pre-chopped. It's hard to imagine those keeping as well or tasting as fresh, especially the tomatoes.

Uh huh

So they can't do what a hundred other fast food chains can do with no issues? What a fail

Hundreds of fast food chains do not cut/prep their own food. It all comes pre-cut, pre-packaged and pre-cooked sometimes in order to prevent this exact type of situation.

It's not like there anti-GMO stance makes a difference, especially when it comes to cheese of all things. Since the chemicals used to make cheeses in North America is 100% a GMO related product.

It definitely won't be as good but hopefully will still be OK. From what the Bloomberg article on this says, they've gone back and forth over the years on whether tomatoes are chopped on location or at the central processing facilities. I almost always buy pre shredded cheese at the grocery store rather than shredding it myself so I can't really complain if they do it too.

It just seems like bad luck that they had so many incidents this year, nothing's really changed with their practices as far as I know that would have caused these E. coli problems. And the thing with the norovirus seems like something that could happen anywhere, that stuff is really contagious.

Edit: the GMO thing is just them jumping on a stupid fad though and has nothing to do with real food safety. They could have been improving safety instead of riding the anti-science bandwagon.

Are you serious? You can't handle rudimentary food prep and safety conditions?

Maybe adjust your hiring policy instead of making it idiot proof.

I honestly don't get the buzz around Chipotle. I went in Palm Springs this summer and it tasted no better or fresher than any other above-Taco-Bell tier of burrito place. Plus the shit is like 1000 calories so it's not like it's healthy or anything.

I don't think they ever claimed to be healthy. Their main schtick was always fresh ingredients and "socially responsible" sourcing of meats from pasture raised animals, etc.

You can eat healthy at chipotle if you want.

Bowl or Salad, No Rice, Beans, Double Meat, Tomato salsa, cheese, and the fajita peppers/onions. Fills the stomach and is only like 600 calories. (Edit: I think the only real health downside would be the massive sodium content of the food but scientists are rethinking the low USDA sodium RDA anyway)

But yea, going for the burrito with rice and some sugary drink or a beer is massive calories and a great way to gain weight for most people.

What kind of chemicals?

Rennet. An Enzyme found only in the digestive system of cows and sheep and such.

It's used to curdle the milk and create solids to make cheeses.

So basically, it's cow stomach juice.

An interesting fact about the GMO version of rennet is that it uses the bacteria E Coli as the base compound. So basically it turns something harmful into something beneficial!

It can be if you watch your macros.

Most people don't do that though.

Chipotle>>>>>Qdoba>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>MOES

Qdoba and MOES both have a decent Queso, and that's it

Chipotle give you a fuckton nuke of a burrito for decent cash, at my local anyway, never gotten sick or had an issue.

Why do I not see this PR disaster and corresponding lowering of quality leading to lower prices

I will take it a step further. I expect prices to slightly go up as an unnamed safety tax. They will claim that these steps make things less efficient and cost them man hours, which they have to try to offset.

This place is more well respected and better than Chipotle. AZGAF knows the joint.

Cellulose is also found in celery. Of all the things to be worried about in our food I wouldn't put this at the front.

Yup. Cellulose is pretty much found in all plant material -- it's a basic building block of all plant cells.

Why anyone is freaking out about this is beyond me.

After all those bullshit commercials they're now just a few steps away from Taco Bell in terms of in-kitchen prep. Pathetic.

But it is wood pulp...just not in the form your brain is imagining it.

I mean, you literally linked to a page suggesting people avoid eating cellulose. My point is just that your original post in combination with that link seems to be of the fear-mongering type.

I literally use cellulose and a cellulose derivative (cellobiose) on a daily basis for research purposes in my laboratory. I'm curious in what form you think my brain is imagining the wood pulp?

E. coli isn't the base compound for rennet. As you mentioned, rennet is an enzyme complex found in the digestive tract of ruminants (cows, etc.). So, scientists took the genes responsible for rennet production in cows and introduced those genes into microbes, such as E. coli. The thing is, the majority of E. coli strains are harmless to humans, it is only a small subset that are actually human pathogens. I'm not even sure that E. coli is particularly used for industrial production of rennet, but if so, I assure you they're using non-pathogenic (aka, non-harmful) E. coli, not pathogenic E. coli.

I'm basically rambling now, but I guess that's all just a big FYI.

Anyone ever had Illegal Petes? That is the GOAT burrito shop. It used to be Chipotle for me, until I had IP.

Pre-sliced tomatoes seems pretty odd. I thought pretty much everybody in the restaurant industry sliced their own tomatoes?

Qdoba has queso. Chipotle is better at basically everything else.
Yeah. Qdoba is kind of trash comparatively. Queso is its saving grace.
