Choosing a gaming Mouse

"Do gaming mice make much of an impact over a regular mouse?"

Not really, as two of the best regarded mice (Intellimouse Explorer 3.0, Wheel Mouse Optical 1.1) are just...mice. Gaming mice have a lot of BS gimmicks that don't really affect actual gaming much. Ultimately, all that matters is comfort, performance, and reliability.

You guys might call me an asshole, but I've been using a Magic Mouse on my iMac to play Diablo 3 and it's worked surprisingly well. :0

I like the extra buttons. I use them often. Also, I need a teamspeak button on my mouse. Too many games require to many keyboard buttons now for me to even use a keyboard button.

The extra buttons come in handy for Diablo and other games that utilize multiple buttons/keys on keyboard. For that reason alone, it's worth it to get a gaming mouse. Also, I can't believe that I've been using a mouse with no extra buttons for this long for gaming. If you game on pc, a gaming mouse is a must, in my opinion.

For real. For me it's WASD, E to open/use, R to reload, Shift to run, Space to jump, Alt to crouch, C for crouch toggle if that can be separate, F for grenade, Tab for map, Q for whatever weird shit the game might want, and anything else (surprisingly many games have much more) is TOO MUCH. Has to go to the mouse. And that's just FPS! Other genres get downright insane.

The one I'm getting not only has 9 programmable buttons, but it has a button that works like a function key, essentially making it 18 programmable buttons.

Maybe it's because I've spent a lot of time dancing around keybinds in MMOs, but it's much more efficient to use a keyboard for pretty much 99.9% of commands. I use a side button my mouse for PTT, and that's it. M1/M2 do whatever they do, the rest is all on the keyboard. Not to mention, my mouse hand is usually busy doing mouse shit, not trying to dance around 9 mouse buttons while accurately aim/point/use camera.

My keyboard hand is usually busy using 8 buttons to control the basic physical action of my character, not trying to dance around the keyboard at the same time to turn on goggles or spell or whatever. :p

Okay, I got the mouse. It is really comfy no matter what type of grip you use and the materials are great to the touch. All the buttons feel good and the wheel in particular is amazing. Extra wide is really nice, the ridges feel good, and it doesn't make noisy clicks but you still feel it. Resistance is just right and clicking it is clean. It also has a nice amount exposed in case you want to scroll a lot.

The mouse is a bit heavier than I expected, but it's not bad. The sensor seems to be doing perfectly well and the DPI switching works without a hitch. Any downsides are in the software. First off, when I launch the software, it resets my sensitivity setting for some reason. Then, it's just generally a bit unintuitive, and for some reason buttons 8 & 9 are flipped around on the main configuration but not in the listings for the tactics configuration.

As for what you can set up with it... pretty much anything. I mean really, anything you could possibly imagine, you can set it up to do with the press of a button, or a combination of buttons if you'd prefer it to be stuffed away a bit so you don't do it on accident. I'm also really glad to see that the rapid fire key can just be a normal key. Really, there is no reason for that feature in any game I can think of. BUT if you can, it's there.

That said, I have a general profile where I've mapped all the extra stuff to the keypad keys. That should allow any game to work well with it, and since the mouse is sending that signal, I don't even have to set it with the keyboard and hope I remembered the mouse button equivalent correctly. I'll probably create separate profiles for old games that can't be reconfigured like Wing Commander 4 and also one for image editing since it can do keyboard combinations.

If it starts crapping out on me I'll let you know, but the first impressions are pretty good aside from deciphering the software at the start.

I'm still rocking this oldschool combo (almost 8 years). MS 1.1 & QcK+
Love it.

So my mouse finally died. I'm looking for a replacement and I have no idea what's the good stuff nowadays but I would really like a mouse with the same size and shape as the MS 1.1

If you want to play it safe, get the Intellimouse Explorer 3.0. If you want a more dramatic change the Logitech G400, successor the MX518, should be great. Any more expensive and I'm not really qualified to say, I think $30-40 is the sweet spot for my gaming needs.

I might get a 3.0 from Amazon, I had one several years ago and it was too big for my hands but I was 15-16 at that time so my hands are probably bigger now :P
It's painful to search for a new mouse everything has thousands of buttons, looks like shit, and some of them even have a fucking LCD screen.. WHY?

So my Razer broke yet again (thanks a lot Diablo!).

I decided that I'm tired paying anything expensive for a mouse so I picked up a Cooler Master Xornet for a little over $20. Great mouse, really nice for a budget. It's a claw grip with an indented rest for your index ring finger (as opposed to resting it on the side next to your pinky), its definitely an interesting design choice but I absolutely love it. Really recommended for anybody who likes claw grip (although honestly if you have small hands like myself you can palm it) but is looking for something cheap.

Slightly offtopic, but are there any wireless keypads along the lines of Logitech G13? Would love one for FPS sofa gaming

That's your ring finger, bro... unless you mean claw grip quite literally.

Update on Inferno: The tactics key could be better placed. As it is, you pretty much have to loosen your grip to use it, so all functions associated with it need to be secondary or "out of the moment" things like inventory switching, map, ect. It's also incredibly hard to push the "page forward" side button while holding the tactics key, so that is one function you won't use. However for first-set uses ignoring the tactics key, all 3 grips work quite nicely but there is a bias for claw or fingertip grip which is stronger if you plan to use the DPI switch buttons.

I have been using the tactics key for force powers in Jedi Academy and that's been pretty good. I just wouldn't set primary functions on it for multiplayer. Though I do feel it's important to note that the only other mice with this function are the Roccat+ mice, and if you ask me, those have a weaker button layout and are more expensive too.

Lastly... DAT WHEEL! Seriously I am in love with this wheel. It has ruined me for other wheels.

I'll join the "stay away for the DeathAdder crew".

It's a shame since I find it ergonomic, specially the two side buttons.
But god the two main button are so UNRELIABLE.

Not only on games, for everything. Double click issues and even just keeping the button pressed sometimes doesn't work, it already drove me mad.

I'm sure it has been answered several times in this thread.

I grip my mouse like a claw, and I heard that are some mouse that are better for me. Which ones are best?

corsair-m90.jpg

Decided to take a chance on the Corsair M90, was $15 off on the Corsair sale at Newegg. The button placement under the thumb looks like it will be much easier to keep track of versus my Razer Naga's numpad.

On a side note, my Razer naga is now for sale lol. OG black and blue edition. $50 and its yours

In case anyone's still wondering about mice, I recently got the Logi G400 and that is a damn fine mouse and a very nice replacement for an aging MX518, which was my previous mouse. Snagged a Steelseries QcK pad along with it. Fine combo.

I run the G400 @ 1000hz w/ 800 DPI. Feels great. Was pleasantly surprised to see that new-fangled mice don't have to go through a separate rate adjuster anymore to boost the polling rate, since it's just part of the official software, at least in the G400's case.

The silly super-DPI on the G400 is totally irrelevant to me since I always use 800 DPI, but your mileage may vary. And as others have noted, the shape is basically identical to the 518's, which is one of the primary reasons I went for this mouse.

just an update to this. I ended up returning the M90 mouse to newegg and switched back to my naga. the m90 had terrible tracking, and the cursor would pause sometimes. completely unacceptable for A mouse

I went from an IME 3.0 to this...

I love everything about this mouse. The buttons are awesome especially the side buttons, (perfect placement, feel) and give better feedback than other side buttons i've tried.

Does anyone know of a worthy successor to it though since its only 2000dpi and discontinued? Other cousins (similar feel shape) I know about are the SW variants, Deathadder, Ikari. Anything else out there?

I love the vertical buttons on the sidewinder, so much nicer then any other horizontal buttons I've tried on other mice.

Yeah this!

my favorite mouse of all time - i absolutely refuse to use anything else.

it may be "old" by today's standards, but its still the best thing ever, and i dont mind at all that its optical instead of laser. plus, microsoft has some pretty decent drivers for it in mac osx.
I have the same. It lasted me like 8 years until I broke it (my desk split in half and it all went to hell...I'm lucky that's the only broken thing) and I bought a new Microsoft mouse but it's just not the same. It was perfect...

i would like to know as well.

I just got my g300 in the mail today, and my initial impressions of it are not bad. It's not overly big or too small. Just about right. I use a finger grip on it and it works well. I like the fact that it has all these buttons, as that's a requirement of mine. Software for it is good - simple and intuitive. Seems like Logitech does a good job of updating the software, as the latest update has updated game profiles of some of the more current games, which comes in very handy. For $30, I think it's well worth it. The true test, of course, is how I feel after an extended amount of use, but so far, initial impressions are that it seems like a pretty solid mouse.

I've read through the whole thread but I'm still not sure which one to get. I really don't think I need one of those with 10-20 buttons.. it should just be comfortable, sensitive and not too expensive. I don't play shooters or MMORPGs competitively.

What about the Logitech G400? Doesn't seem too bad to me.. but the G500 costs just 8€ more.

edit: Just got the DeathAdder. They didn't have that many mice in the store and I didn't like the feel of the others. Gonna try it now.

I'm thinking about getting the Deatheadder. It's on sale at best buy for 40 bucks. I bought a really cheap K/M combo for my PC when I built it. Figured I would do a bit more research on the subject. It's just a cheap Logitech, something that would come with a computer. I'm a claw gripper. No idea that I was until I stated researching mice. I actually don't hate it I just want a heavier mouse with a bit more firm, bouncy click. Does the deathadder fit that description?

I use a R.A.T 9, I love the customization I can do to it to fit my hand. it really has made a difference in comfort. it's not for everyone obviously but i love it.

Well, the forward thumb button on my Razer Mamba is cutting in and out constantly. E-mailed their support to see what they'd do. They say my mouse is 3 months out of its 2 year warranty so they won't repair it.

Yeah, I'm done with Razer. Back to Logitech...my MX 518 lasted me 5 years (and it would still last me if I were using it)...they've been solid.

My Razer Imperator has just started registering double clicks with the 'go back' thumb button. So annoying as this mouse feels perfect in my hand and its probably my favourite mouse. I'm not getting another one though.

The same thing happened with mine as well.

That sucks. Its weird how Razers double click problems seems so random, some get 3+ years out of theirs. You would think Razer would take steps to fix this problem though, they're surely aware of it.

Reading this thread, having bought a Razer mouse a few weeks ago, is making me very nervous.

Quoting myself for the lulz. Oh well, I nearly got 4 months out of mine. Thats pretty good for an £70 mouse.

I personally love my R.A.T. 7. Being able to modify the weight and other aspects of the mouse, I'm glad to have made the investment and buy it. If I could change one thing about it, I wish it was a tad bit wider (only because I have big hands).

Am I the only one who despite using a good ergonomic mouse (shape is good, not the brand), think the Trust Bluespot Precision wireless one (fullsize) still ends up claw-gripping?

I nabbed a G700 a couple months ago and it's really pretty fantastic in all regards. Wired/wireless hybrid, unlockable scroll wheel, button placement, and not-Razer-build-quality make it awesome.

My gaming mouse... simple, comfortable shape, 2 side buttons, 3 dpi settings.
And CHEAP. Microsoft makes a good mouse.
Don't need much more than that, folks.
