NBC has released the official synopsis for Chuck vs the Couch Lock: Also, the title for episode 4.09 is Chuck vs. Phase Three.

I was wondering if they were going to release a synopsis this week. I couldn't find it posted anywhere by the time I went to bed.

I just saw it this morning on ChuckTV.net - don't know when they put it up last night. Oh, and they confirmed it's "Chuck versus the Couch Lock".

I just read a really good article criticizing TVByTheNumbers' Renew/Cancel headline about Chuck being in trouble and exploring the show's chances.

There's an interesting part that mentions an Audience Loyalty Index which seems to confirm what we suspected after seeing the first ratings from this season: Chuck, with virtually no advertising, is running purely on its loyal fanbase right now. 95,7% of the audience from the first episode returned for the second one, suggesting that only 5% of its viewers leave between episodes. Comparatively, last year it averaged 82% on that index, which means the new viewers we caught in the first half of the season weren't all that loyal and, as we saw, left rather quickly.

Of course, we already knew Chuck is a stable show, but it's still interesting to see the numbers back it up and show it more precisely. So assuming that remains true, the good news is we're unlikely to fall much further from where we are at the moment. The question now is whether that's enough for NBC...

Chuck is pretty much a fanbase kinda show... you either really enjoy it or don't care for it. I don't find many people are in the middle...

The ratings for not just Chuck, but the rest of NBC in general, over the next few weeks will be enough to tell us.

I still hold out hope that if NBC cancels it that another network like CW would pick it up. Or perhaps USA.

Yeah. After three seasons and something that many people see as a "mythology show" (unlike many sitcoms where it is pretty normal to just jump in and out and be fine), the fanbase probably is not going to grow much more, if at all. Same thing that happened to Lost.

Honestly at this point I think I would rather the show end then have it switch to a non-broadcast network. As reduced as the budget has become for NBC, it is probably still much higher then it would be on CW or a cable network. I don't think I would want to see what they would have to do to the show to keep it alive at that point, since it would probably mean cutting most of the main characters, writers, and slashing the special effects so they look even worse then they currently do.

As long as the show goes out on its own terms, I would be fine. But if they pull a stunt like at the end of season 2 and it gets cancelled, I would be pissed.

I wouldn't expect that. Fedak has said time and time again that he prefers prologues to epilogues, and that he'd rather have the viewer imagine a continuity to the story than have it tied in a neat little bow. So whenever it happens, I fully expect Chuck to end with a mindfuck of a finale (like we had with Papa Bartowski's message last season or the Intersect 2.0) instead of closure a-la-Lost. I could see something like Chuck versus the Colonel or Chuck versus the Other Guy as a series finale as well though.

Based off what Schwartz and Fedak have said, it sounds like if the show ends on episode 13 this year, it will work fairly well as an ending. If they get a back 9 they will end the show like earlier seasons did with a cliffhanger. Personally I thought Ring Part 2 would work fairly well as a conclusion to the series if you ignored the last few minutes once Chuck got the message from his father.

I agree that it worked as a good finale without the final scene. I still think the finale to 2 was the best one. That scene with Chuck taking down all the ring agents was so great, and they ended it on the perfect mix of WTF and "Holy shit, I cant wait to see more!"

They have done a great job of transitioning Chuck from the weakling nerd to the still slightly cowardly but badass spy. Morgan now fills the geek quotient. Nay I say better than Chuck did. Once they added Morgan to the mix, things just elevated. It is as if Morgan is an accelerant for the comedy in the situations.

I hate to sound like a broken record, despite I am enjoying the extended adventures of Team Bartowski... if the show ended on the finale season 2, I woulda been more than pleased.

And miss this:

For shame.

The season 3 finale was better for closure. The Ring was taken down for the most part. Chuck's entire family knew the secret. He got the girl. Casey is reunited with his daughter. Nice little resolution to nearly everything really. And then they introduced the mother angle.

I would've been content not having anyone else knowing Chuck's secret, and Chuck still had a chance to run away with Sarah at the end of the season 2. Chuck vs the Colonel was a very important episode for fans of the Chuck and Sarah-hip when they are in bed together.

The Ring was just a Fulcrum sequel

After re-watching a whole lot of Chuck over the last two months, I do believe that might be my favorite scene from the entire series.

Actually, despite the list of things I hated about season 3.0, the one thing it did really well was make me love the character of Morgan. I enjoy almost every scene he is in now, which is such a contrast to season 1 where he tended to be more annoying than anything else.

I will agree that Morgan has been elevated to priceless since season 3. He was always a lil fun and annoying at the same time, now he is just solid gold that brings out the best in everyone.

But my favorite scene of the series is still probably the last scene of season 2. Bryce is dead. Sarah and Casey are hostage. Then Chuck just loses it and kicks all of their asses as Sarah and Casey watch slack jawed. It is made all the better by Casey's "uuuuuh."

That or Chuck and Sarah hooking up in the hotel room and Morgan delivering the epic, long distance cock block.

Both scenes are among the series' best, but I personally have a soft spot for the Chuck/Shaw video conferencing thing in Chuck vs the Ring: Part II. This one.

Season 4 (well, really everything since 3.5) is just awesome, so it doesn't require individual references/scenes/etc to justify it.

I'm not really feeling season 4 that much. The show isn't the same since Chuck isn't acting like a helpless nerd anymore. It has turned more into a real spy action series. Jeff and Lester returning last week helped some though.

Morgan has easily filled the helpless nerd angle. Well, Morgan doesn't think he is helpless, but he is. That is what makes it funnier.

Also, the fact that Chuck is no longer the helpless nerd shows that the show has made progress since its inception. That is a good thing.

Best scene of the series was when Chuck got de-intersected in "vs the Colonel". Chuck has Sarah, his father is there to share the moment with him, and everyone can ride off into the sunset. Such a cathartic experience after watching him want nothing more than that for 2 seasons... which is why I was so upset initially after "vs The Ring" for instantaneously re-intersecting him.

Second place probably goes to one of:
- Sarah kissing Chuck when she thought the bomb was about to explode in S1's "vs The Truth"
- the whole "Daddy's Gone" scene in S2, which was pure badass
- "Mr. Roboto" action sequence in S2, which was 10 shades of incredible, with the juxtaposition of Jeffster, the Fulcrum assault, and the wedding

Yeah, if Chuck were still totally incompetent we would all be sick of his character not growing. And even though he's a pretty decent spy now, he's still bumbling and awkward in other ways.

One of my favorite scenes is the big office shootout in First Kill with "We're Not Gonna Take It"...probably the best big action setpiece they've done besides Mr. Roboto.

One of the new writers taking a turn at bat tomorrow night - Nicholas Wootten penned "Chuck vs the Cubic Z". He has an Emmy for an episode of NYPD Blue and did a lot of work on cop shows in the past. I'm curious to see what he brings to the table.

Lots of closeups of Jeff's naked ass.

No idea what NYPD Blue is but that sounds pretty good.

It, along with Homicide, was one of the few great police procedurals. It helped push the limits of what you could see and say on network TV, and I think those two shows influenced HBO to start with Oz, which was the beginning of great cable dramas.

Episode 4.08 is apparently called "Chuck versus The Fear of Death." It features a character named
Adelbert De Smet who will be in two episodes.

I wonder who will be playing them. I can't think of any announced guest stars we've heard of that don't have their role laid out yet.

Titles could use some more variety. Isn't the episode right before called vs the Aisle of Death or Terror or something? Plus we had Angel de la Muerte last season...

I thought we didn't know Tim Dalton's role, which is I believe supposed to start around 4.06-4.08?

I doubt it is Dalton, since I thought he was supposed to be in more than two episodes.

Right? It makes Mondays not suck.

First two episodes were a blast, let's keep it up!

This is the first Monday in a long time that I dont have to work. So used to going into work, having a managers' meeting for two hours, then more work. Sometimes getting home in time for Chuck, sometimes not.

Having the day off, I dont know what to do with myself.

Ok, just because the "First movie theater experience" thread is making me feel very old, I am wondering what everyone's ages are in this thread.

Me? I am 31.
