Mostly because the writers are completely out of ideas and because the characters have been in arrested development for a couple of seasons now. Nothing ever happens to really change the dynamics, the stakes are never real, and things always revert back to status quo.

but ever so delicious
Oh wow it got renewed? That's great news but i am starting to get a little sick and tired of it.

I thought this weeks episode was ok and I would have honestly been happy if Sarah did, you know.

As soon as it finished i checked tvline for some random gossip news and spotted the chuck spoilers, figured i would check them out. Fuucccccckkk now i hate the show again after reading what was posted, It made me furious.

you speak so well
I've become a lot less interested in the show lately, hell I haven't even been motivated enough to watch the past five or six episodes but I'm pretty glad it's renewed. Hopefully they choose to finally end a season without a cliffhanger next year because this luck has to run out sometime.

Battered wife syndrome. Just saying. We all know in our hearts its never going to get better or ever be the same, but we've kept watching. I am filing divorce this time though, pending the critical word on the first batch of S5 episodes.

As someone who has endured Smallville for 10 seasons, you're just as aware of this disease as I am :lol Gluttons for punishment!

Glee is the poster child for battered wife syndrome on TV. Or the really abusive boyfriend. That show is more physically abusive than Chuck. Chuck is more the emotionally abusive husband. I am happy about the renewal, yet accept that it is time for the show to go. I will still watch just for the simple fun the show provides me each week.

You're a good fighter, Solo. I hate to lose you.

At least we still have you on our side with Fringe.

I am glad to hear that it got a renewal, even if I admit that the show's lost some steam and it's hard to see where they might go with even MORE time to fill and even fewer secrets to keep. Still, somehow it and Harry's Law (if it comes back) have been the only shows this TV season that became regular viewing for me, so at least my TV will continue to be useful for more than the evening news and some console gaming.

What I won't be happy about though is the fear that they're going to continue product-placing this show out the ass to the point where the script is compromised for more than a scene or two. It has gotten really annoying really quickly in the past. At least be a little more subtle about it, my god.

But I have about 12 posts across 3 seasons in the Smallville threads. I know why I'm watching. I quit complaining long ago (it's just that bad). I know I'm only still there because I've already invested a decade on it.

And despite its faults, I do watch Chuck because I thoroughly enjoy it. But I DO hope they just go ahead and announce it as being the last season, the end, no more "will it be cancelled" business.

Listen, I am just as much a Chuck fan as the next guy, but why are we getting so excited about a 5th season pickup when nothing has been confirmed by NBC yet?

I can hear all sorts of reports that it has been picked up, but until I hear it from one of the stars of the show, or from NBC, I am not going to get my hopes up...yet.

Because Ausiello is an extremely reliable source.

I was almost to the acceptance stage of grieving that I would be losing both Chuck and Fringe but this years renewals have been extremely kind to me.

Chuck isn't stale or overdue for a cancellation yet, it's not gaining in quality like it was during 2 but its not going down either. Last episode was easily in the top 10.

It is not going down from where it was at the end of season 3, but it is a far cry from the quality of season 2.

The news of Chuck's renewal yesterday was not too exciting for me. It was just "Cool. How did they pull this off?" I am just tired of this happening every single year. Tired of being worried halfway through a season, wondering if it is the last.

When news of Fringe's renewal hit, I had to stop myself from jumping up and down and screaming out the window because I was so elated. Much like how I felt when Chuck was renewed for a third season.

Wow....I was not expecting s5 at all, great news. Despite falling from the great heights of season 2, I still think chuck is still better then most of the crap we get on tv. if they can wrap it up with a solid 13 episodes and give us a proper conclusion, I would be extremely happy.

I would say s4 has been on par with the second half of s3 certainly better then the first half

I see the same thing happening with Chuck that happened with SG1

Chuck should have ended here...

...SG1 here.

I really do no need to know what happened after that point in both photos. Anything else is nice, and will have the possibility of some nice moments, but ultimately is not needed.

Lots of positivity and negativity which I guess in a way mirrors the show lately. More good than bad though for me so I'm happier than a pig in shit that it got renewed!

I've been avoiding the thread bacause i'm way behind (2 episodes to go), but renewed?
Fuck YEAH!
I wouldn't mind if they stopped after the hospital proposal scene, but since they continued after that, i'm glad were getting a new season. Hope they can go out with a bang.

Sorry, but you have to endure S3 and half of S4 to get there. I respectfully submit this as the end-that-should-have-been:

Chuck season 2 was fantastic.

Where did it all go wrong?

I might be with Solo here but I know I'll probably tune into the first episode to check out the quality.

They had to agree to huge budget cuts at the end of season 2 to continue. So the fight scenes are crappier now, along with the music, the FX shots, and other less obvious things like why they still have to use the same Buy More set. I believe they also lost a ton of writing talent at the end of season 2 because everyone assumed the show would get canceled so they moved on.

Its funny, because at no time EVER while S1 and S2 were airing was I thinking "goddamn, the budget for this show is incredible!" But perhaps I should have been, because I can't recall another show which has suffered so badly from a huge budget slash as Chuck. S1-S2 and then S3-S4 might as well be two different shows.

- Sepinwall: Thoughts on the 'Chuck' renewal rumors
...

All of which is to say that while I'm excited and borderline-shocked by all the reports from last night that NBC's close to ordering at least 13 more episodes of "Chuck" for a fifth season, I'm believing nothing until I hear it from either an NBC official, Chris Fedak or Josh Schwartz. If Deadline/TVLine, Variety and Entertainment Weekly are all reporting that this is where NBC's leaning, I'm assuming they're right, but stranger things have happened at upfront time.

...

If this happens, the one thing I would like is for the creative team to have some certainty about how many episodes they're making, whether this really is the final season, etc. I'll take as much "Chuck" as NBC will give me, but at the same time, the show has clearly had some creative bumps this year in terms of not knowing exactly when the season and/or the series would be ending. If Greenblatt says to Fedak and Schwartz, "Okay, I'm giving you 13 episodes to end the show, so do what you want with that," I think that would be preferable to the uncertainty that's hung over the show these last two seasons. I don't want "Chuck" to end, but I think if the writers knew exactly when the end was coming, we could get a pretty spectacular final half-season.
I agree wholeheartedly on the latter point - a firm end date would up the stakes and give the writers something definitive to work towards. Much more commentary from Sepinwall via the link.

I don't think they lost writers until after the third season (Miller, Adler, and Rosenbaum). Actually, they might have lost one or two from the budget cuts, but I don't think it was any of the better known ones. I am not really convinced the writers they lost after season 3 is as major of an issue as some make it out to be either. There were a few characterization issues at the beginning of the season, but some of my favorite episodes this season were written by the new writers. Beyond that I would say this season has been much better than season 3, despite its issues.

I'm of the opinion that if anything has hurt the quality of the show, it was the budget cuts causing them to reduce the budget for the action scenes as you said above. Without being able to afford to do as many (or as good) action scenes, they seemed to have ratcheted up the character drama. Personally, I am not a fan of that, so I have lost some interest in the show. But as I said in my last post, overall I still enjoy watching it so I am glad they are apparently getting another season.

Although, on the other hand, the writers of LOST had a firm date for almost 3 years and the last season was horrendous.

Kind of surprised this got renewed. I haven't liked this season at all, nor has anyone I know.

In other news, I feel like I saw the cover of Tim Hecker's "Radio Amor" in one of Chuck's flashes recently but the episode is gone from my DVR and now I can't check it. Blurgh.

Finally caught up, i liked the last episode (nice nod to Terminator 2)
Morgan as an Italian arms dealer was hilarious.
But Vivian disapearing was the dumbest shit ever, it was like the writers realised halfway trough that they had to write another episode and adjusted it.

Official: NBC renews 'Chuck'!

It‘s Chuck vs. a new NBC president.

And it Chuck won!

The perpetual bubbliest of the broadcast bubble shows has once again pulled out a victory, securing a fifth season.

For awhile there, things looked possibly bleak for our heroes. Robert Greenblatt took the reigns at NBC and inherited a new crop of pilots to shape into his own hits while at the same time Chuck was dipping in the rating — the show averaged 5.6 million viewers and a 2.0 rating among adults 18-49 this season, and that’s with DVR included.

But it the show will return for 13 episodes next season.

EDIT: Sepinwall:
The rumors are true. "Chuck" will be back for a 13-episode 5th season, according to a reliable source connected to the show.

I don't have any details beyond that right now - like whether NBC is holding out the possibility for a back-nine order at mid-season or if they anticipate these 13 being it for the order - but I wrote at length about the renewal rumors yesterday. Now, I'm just pleased. So celebrate with Chuck and Morgan humming their favorite entrance music (after the jump), and we can go into Monday's episode knowing it's not the series finale.

I'm happy it got renewed, although I wouldn't have been devastated had it not been. There have already been a couple of episodes which could have served as series Finales, IMO. I'm not nearly as into it as I have been in the past, but I enjoy the characters, even if the story can become a bit wonky. Chuck is a nice distraction for me and will continue to be so in the Fall. I do love how 2 shows I enjoy (Chuck and Fringe), have survived the cancellation axe despite predictions of their demise.

That's not a given. Season 5 is the final season, but the pickup leaves open the possibility for a back 9. Which may mean we won't get a proper, real, final ending if it ends at 13.

Hopefully the crew is told early on about the final end date. If they're billing it as a final season, they should be prepared to treat it as such.

Yeah, probably not the typical use for this gif but fuck it. Count me in the group that thinks Chuck needs to be put to rest.

That could make the final season all the better. Give them a goal to work towards.

Sounds like that's the case. There's more details spilling out today and presumably there will be a couple Schwartz/Fedak interviews regarding the finale that will address things. We know it's renewed and that S5 will be the final season. Sure seems like the 13 episode order is all that we're getting. It's still unclear if they're going to run it in the Fall or save it for later. All together, this is a solution that makes sense for NBC, and I'm very happy that it's working out this way.

I would assume that they're going to do that. NBC probably wants to use this as a stop gap measure until they get all of their new programming up, and WB probably offered it for pretty cheap so they can get some more episodes in the can for syndication. I don't think anyone has illusions of Chuck suddenly putting up big numbers and earning a back nine. I just hope NBC has the foresight to inform them early that they're only getting 13. We should hear more about this soon.

Just order a full season and do it the proper way damnit. They get a cut of the dvd sales don't they?

13 eps > 22 eps, especially for this show. This season in particular has shown they don't have enough material for a full season.
