I can hear all sorts of reports that it has been picked up, but until I hear it from one of the stars of the show, or from NBC, I am not going to get my hopes up...yet.
I was almost to the acceptance stage of grieving that I would be losing both Chuck and Fringe but this years renewals have been extremely kind to me.PhoncipleBone said:At least we still have you on our side with Fringe.

Where did it all go wrong?
I might be with Solo here but I know I'll probably tune into the first episode to check out the quality.

I agree wholeheartedly on the latter point - a firm end date would up the stakes and give the writers something definitive to work towards. Much more commentary from Sepinwall via the link....
All of which is to say that while I'm excited and borderline-shocked by all the reports from last night that NBC's close to ordering at least 13 more episodes of "Chuck" for a fifth season, I'm believing nothing until I hear it from either an NBC official, Chris Fedak or Josh Schwartz. If Deadline/TVLine, Variety and Entertainment Weekly are all reporting that this is where NBC's leaning, I'm assuming they're right, but stranger things have happened at upfront time.
...
If this happens, the one thing I would like is for the creative team to have some certainty about how many episodes they're making, whether this really is the final season, etc. I'll take as much "Chuck" as NBC will give me, but at the same time, the show has clearly had some creative bumps this year in terms of not knowing exactly when the season and/or the series would be ending. If Greenblatt says to Fedak and Schwartz, "Okay, I'm giving you 13 episodes to end the show, so do what you want with that," I think that would be preferable to the uncertainty that's hung over the show these last two seasons. I don't want "Chuck" to end, but I think if the writers knew exactly when the end was coming, we could get a pretty spectacular final half-season.

suaveric said:They had to agree to huge budget cuts at the end of season 2 to continue. So the fight scenes are crappier now, along with the music, the FX shots, and other less obvious things like why they still have to use the same Buy More set. I believe they also lost a ton of writing talent at the end of season 2 because everyone assumed the show would get canceled so they moved on.

Its Chuck vs. a new NBC president.
And it Chuck won!
The perpetual bubbliest of the broadcast bubble shows has once again pulled out a victory, securing a fifth season.
For awhile there, things looked possibly bleak for our heroes. Robert Greenblatt took the reigns at NBC and inherited a new crop of pilots to shape into his own hits while at the same time Chuck was dipping in the rating the show averaged 5.6 million viewers and a 2.0 rating among adults 18-49 this season, and thats with DVR included.
But it the show will return for 13 episodes next season.
The rumors are true. "Chuck" will be back for a 13-episode 5th season, according to a reliable source connected to the show.
I don't have any details beyond that right now - like whether NBC is holding out the possibility for a back-nine order at mid-season or if they anticipate these 13 being it for the order - but I wrote at length about the renewal rumors yesterday. Now, I'm just pleased. So celebrate with Chuck and Morgan humming their favorite entrance music (after the jump), and we can go into Monday's episode knowing it's not the series finale.

That's not a given. Season 5 is the final season, but the pickup leaves open the possibility for a back 9. Which may mean we won't get a proper, real, final ending if it ends at 13.Solo said:If 13 eps is it, for real, then I'll finish the show.

Yeah, probably not the typical use for this gif but fuck it. Count me in the group that thinks Chuck needs to be put to rest.
Sounds like that's the case. There's more details spilling out today and presumably there will be a couple Schwartz/Fedak interviews regarding the finale that will address things. We know it's renewed and that S5 will be the final season. Sure seems like the 13 episode order is all that we're getting. It's still unclear if they're going to run it in the Fall or save it for later. All together, this is a solution that makes sense for NBC, and I'm very happy that it's working out this way.Solo said:If 13 eps is it, for real, then I'll finish the show.
I would assume that they're going to do that. NBC probably wants to use this as a stop gap measure until they get all of their new programming up, and WB probably offered it for pretty cheap so they can get some more episodes in the can for syndication. I don't think anyone has illusions of Chuck suddenly putting up big numbers and earning a back nine. I just hope NBC has the foresight to inform them early that they're only getting 13. We should hear more about this soon.RevoDS said:Hopefully the crew is told early on about the final end date. If they're billing it as a final season, they should be prepared to treat it as such.
