So I saw a locked medical thread on another forum about getting circumcision in later life and it made me wonder what GAF's views on non-medical circumcision are?

Personally I'm not circumcised and would never want to be, and I think it's a completely backward and unnecessary tradition.

The arguments pro-circumcision say that it has health and hygiene benefits, but I think these are largely myths or are insignificant at best. If you have access to soap and clean water then there is no hygiene issue whatsoever. The religious arguments to me are just a joke; if you honestly think you won't get into heaven unless you chop bits of your knob off, you're a mental case, in my opinion.

Personally I find any stimulation to the glans when not aroused to be very painful, so to have it rubbing against my pants all the time wouldn't be very nice, unless it gradually becomes less sensitive, but then that would surely mean that it reduces sexual sensitivity as well?

There are certain medical conditions such as phimosis where circumcision obviously makes sense, but for a normal male I can't see any logical reason for it.

While data suggests that circumcision may confer a protective effect against HIV, and it's fine if an adult elects to have that procedure done to themselves, I'm not convinced that it is worth allowing parents to make that decision for their kids, especially since it involves the physical trauma of cutting the kid's dick.

I'm opposed to having it performed on children who have no say in the matter, regardless of the reason.

However, once you're over 16, legally you should be able to perform any kind of body modification you want, assuming you or someone else is willing and able to perform it.

As a Brit mind, I find the weird ubiquity of circumcision in the US for non religious purposes just nutty.

Unless it's a medical necessity, the only benefits to circumcision can be achieved by the non circumcised, simply by just washing regularly.

As someone who's went through phimosis it isn't a big issue, getting a cream from your GP solves it pretty quickly

I got the procedure made like 3 years ago (am 29) and the boner didnt die... I had to clench my ass cheeks or leg muscles to drain blood from the dick for the boner to end. Also, woke up every single day with a boner during recovery.

I was 4 when it happened. I couldn't tell you the pros or cons from experience because I don't particularly remember what having a foreskin feels like. I will tell you what having my penas feels like (yikes, I never thought I would say that)

- not uncomfortable in my pants
- stimulation doesn't take long
- cleaning is pretty straight forward
- something about being obliviously dry that just resonates with me lol
- my partner prefers it (I think, she hasn't complained so far haha)

Maybe this is one of those topics that require one to look at their personal reasons for doing or not doing it as opposed to what's generally acceptable or makes societal sense. I know I never had a choice but hey, it worked out just fine for me. Good discussion though.

Was it worth it in the end?

Well, I used to have searing pain arround the Glans (head) of the penis once in a while due to the foreskin beeing too small. So I went from, searing pain once in a while to, painless dick but disfigured. Fair trade I guess. But I wouldn't do it knowing it now.

I often hear pro arguments based on hygiene concern, and while it certainly is a way to treat that it feels a little overkill to be honest. Pulling pack the foreskin to apply soap below and rinsing it takes a few seconds during showering. No need to cut the skin off. The statistics regarding issues in that area based on lack of hygiene are portably influenced by the fact that not everyone is as cleanly as another might think.
The way I see it: if nature made it like it is its probably not meant to be cut off. Especially if a little cleanliness can usually remedy all negatives, and that is generally never a bad idea.
