How are you supposed to handle garbage? I have a city of 5500 ish people, and my incinerator doesn't come close to coping with the garbage. Surely I'm not supposed to build 4-5 incinerators?

I'm having the same problem.

Also, is anyone else having issues with the game crashing frequently. Sometimes when I try to save, it gives me an error and crashes.

Have you maximized the budget for garbage?

Are all your garbage routes efficient, or are they stuck in traffic?

I have 4-5 incinerators for my 20K population.

Really nice shot from the Skylines subreddit:

Gorgeous. How did they pack in trees like that?

Metacritic still going strong. Seems all our fears of useless reviews were unwarranted.

I'm not sure where those fears were coming from. This is the sort of game that would only be reviewed by people predisposed to like the genre. And even Sim City 2013 got off easy from the initial batch of reviews.

For me it doesn't crash per se, but the image freezes a dozen minutes in (mouse is stil mouving, and I still hear the music and sounds when I use shortcuts) after I play a couple hours in the day.
I looked at my temperatures, for me I think it's the CPU getting too hot (even though I barely have 10.000 people).

So I can play a couple hours fine, after that it's only 15 minutes every hour... :-(

I kinda want more from my city simulation games now at this point now that I've experienced the good and bad of both SC2013 and CSL.

If CO ever ends up making a game that combines the good parts of both of them, well, I'd be in city sim heaven.

I can't imagine them not developing a bigger sequel to this, after their DLC/expansion run is done.

I think you've hammered that point home quite hard now man.

Just thought I would post a screenshot of my roughly 8.5k pop city. I have taken design queues from the town I live in although the layout is totally different.

Csk7JZJ.jpg

Now I have unlocked High density zoning I am going to create a city core just not 100% sure where yet. Another design queue I am going to take is the mix of low/medium density zoning we have in the same close/street so by combining the high rise ban with a few high density plots I should be able to approximate a close with several houses on it as well as a few blocks of flats / apartments.

For those of you with larger cities, what's your split between one-way and two-way roads?

Almost all my non-ramp roads are two way, because every time I've tried to do something cool with one-way roads, ambulances and hearses have decided to act like idiots, and bodies keep piling up.

Got around to really digging into the game, and it's amazingly addictive. Here's my city, and current super helpful mods. Also, I know I have a bit of a pollution issue in that river, but there's not much I can do about it, since I have a dam at the end that would have pushed it downstream. This is my first city, and first time ever with a city builder, so have mercy. Lol My goal is to make a
Socialist Utopia.

I just caved seeing these glorious screens.

Now does anyone have a starter guide for me to use? I need to get my basics right before I can go all mayor on it.

I just watched one of the many youtube videos in which they started from scratch. I stopped it once the download was complete and felt ready for action.
It really isn't hard, you will be gradually eased in.

Do you have any experience with the simcity games?

If you do, its pretty intuitive and there are tips that help you along the way. Super easy to learn.

Build trash dumps away from the general population, make cemeteries close to the population as soon as possible, only build roads with the little tress on them. These three things will help so much.

Oh man, took awhile to reach 150k population and only used 4 squares.
Game is too big lol.
Using all the 5x5 grid will take weeks.

Time to focus on a rural/farm area I guess.

So i'm going to make my city completely grid based and see what kind of traffic nightmare i have. Then for my next city i'll try a more fluid approach. Wish i could play it now but i've only just started work.

The big nightmare is really just the connections between different district types, like commercial to residential, and the thruway to your cities' highways or entry roads.

This game is very good, it makes me even more sad about SimCity 2013, I think it was better for the most part, but size matters.

I think it's way more fun in this game if you used the freeform road tool. It looks nice and seem to make the roads...less susceptible to congestion for some reason.

So, is there a better way to transfer power than to have ugly powerlines everywhere? I was having a lot of trouble; the powerlines don't seem to connect to the power plant at any specific location, and just get in the way of building. But I don't think I see others using them the same way.

Also, for some reason, when I tried to make a second segment of powerline, even though I was connecting them to existing powered powerlines, they kept giving me the disconnected plug icon and there was no power :/

I really wanna get into this game as I love city builders, but the controls and systems seem really clunky and unpolished at the moment. For all its problems, SC 2013 was a much better polished product at launch.

Simcity being a more... Polish product...?
In some areas, true. It was somewhat. Ore intuitive and had more charm, but everything else what a clusterfuck.

So, is there any way to lower some settings to relieve the CPU? Mine is getting too hot now that I reached 20k inhabitants....

Just to be sure: you do know buildings will automatically transfer power in an area around them, without the need of a power line?
If you see so many pictures without them, I guess it's because people tend to build dense cities, so the need of power line practically disapears.

Why are you using spoiler tags?

It's a secret town obviously!

Almost all my non-ramp roads are two way, because every time I've tried to do something cool with one-way roads, ambulances and hearses have decided to act like idiots, and bodies keep piling up.

I had that problem as well. For anything industry anywhere I just use 6 lane roads lol. I found the 4 lane roads cause more trafic than they save, because people wait until intersections to just uturn, which wastes time.

In your options, there's a slider for tilt-shift, drop that all the way down. If you're getting tearing, are you playing on Mac? If Windows, have yuo disabled Aero or something? On PC, the game's fullscreen mode is actually fullscreen windowed, so the Aero side of the OS should be forcing triple-buffering.

Thanks I'll try and check that out.

Er, I have a good production of electricity but some of my powerlines are down, though connected, and Im lining them up next to the buildings, but a major part of my area is losing power. Help??

You need a closer line to a generator or more power to push it all the way out there.
It is a common problem even in SC when an area would consume so much energy that there is few left to pass through to the next area.

Edit:
Why so many electrical poles? Delete them all.
You only need the poles to connect from your power generator to a blue area, and then every building near a blue area will spread power throughout your city.

Expanded into a second tile, now my city is at 10k (was at 5000 a few hours ago)

The game also crashed when I tried to save:( lost an hour of progress, thankfully I had already done most of the work before the last save.

I think I need to build along the highway way more and add more highway roundabouts, instead of building in two directions away from it.
Next time I build away from it I'm just going to make another big highway first.

Unlocking offices really helps a lot, no longer do I need dirty industry that also needs a billion trucks to function just to grow my city.

This thread is hugeeee. Someone posted a tutorial/beginner's guide video on here but cant find it anymore. Anybody has some suggestions what to start with? This is my first city builder :)
