Civilization V Brave New World |OT| More than Content Tourism

Theming the great works seems to be fairly useful to me. It looks like I get a bonus +1 tourism per great work that I've managed synergize in a particular spot of interest, so for a spot using 2 great works I go from +4 tourism and +4 culture to +6 tourism and +4 culture. Tiny numbers I guess, but it's a 50% boost to tourism and I have not had much trouble getting the theming bonus more than once. I think in the Hermitage it requires 3 items and theming gets an additional +3 tourism.

Maybe the AI in my game doesn't care enough to make this matter, but everyone is putting around at 9 to 12 tourism and have piddly culture, while I'm running at 60 tourism and quickly gaining influence on other cultures as a result. Would be interesting to see how well I can steal cities this way, particularly since back in Civ3/Civ4 my brother's favorite means of expansion was by culture creep and having cities defect to his side :)

Moreover, I would like to be able to use archaeologists outside of my territory. Would make for a fantastic extra element to the game. No Landmarks for those, obviously.

I do this all the time. You're supposed to get your artifacts from unclaimed ground or poach them from AIs that you don't like (since it is a major diplomatic infraction).

Same thing happened to me a few days ago. It turns out I was missing a dll that someone posted earlier in this thread.
I checked and I already have the DLL.

Just noticed the game unlocks in 5 hours on Steam. I fucking hate region locks/delays.

Diplomatic victory with the Shoshone, was trying for cultural but Brazil was tough to deal with on the map

Didn't go to war once :)

Asked earlier, but trying again -- Did they remove the option to puppet enemy cities that you conquer?

I don't get any choice

I am thinking if, with the new culture victory, you even need to limit your number of cities. I am doing so well culturally speaking as shoshone even when I'm focusing the most I can on science (tho I have no tourism) that I think the cultural victory = small empire is completely over now.

I just finished up my first game as Shoshone, went liberty/wide, and won with an easy culture victory around 1900. There was a time near the end of the game where I was putting out something like 2000 culture a turn (thanks to placing 1st in the World's Fair) and choosing a new policy every 3-4 of turns, it was pretty insane and also a lot of fun.

The mid to late game is so much more entertaining now, I picked up all the exploration policies and had a blast sending archaeologists out across the world to loot treasures for my museums. Eight museums + Louvre + Sistine Chapel + Hermitage weren't enough to hold all of my great works/artifacts and I eventually had to leave the last couple of archaeological sites for the other civs because I had no where else to store them!

The AI also felt so much less schizophrenic when dealing diplomatically with them. I had a couple of life long friends that never turned on me even though I completely ignored my military for almost the entire game.

I had one of those too in one of my games. I really like how the ideologies really allow you to alter your Civilization's plan of victory almost on a dime. Things like Treaty Organization and Arsenal of Democracy allowed me to swap to a very effortless Diplo win in my game.

I've currently got something like 12+ puppets. Which civ are you playing?

Thanks for the response. That's weird, I dunno what's going on with my game then...

I am Theodora, and I was fighting the Maya civ near me. When I conquered some of his cities, I got no choice like in vanilla/G&K

Bought it and tried to unlock through VPN. After downloading it for a (long) while I got to see the new intro, but then it switches back G&K when I enter the menu. Is there something I can do? What am I missing?

edit: enabling BNW under DLC doesn't seem to work either?

You need to add a .dll file to your civ 5 directory. Look back through the thread, it's somewhere in the early half.

SHIT, Napoleon just started a sneaky war after asking to go to war with another civ (I asked for 10 turns) at turn 10 my units were all on the nearest swedish city border waiting to pounce and this fucker declares war!

You crafty motherfucker, he also hurt my feelings. "The hardest part was pretending to be your friend"

Fuck Napoleon.

I'm still gettin that damn crash problem. It seems whenever I load a game that has over 200 turns, it just crashes. I restarted as Mother Russia and am doing a lot better now that I am not trapped on a piece of shit Island. I did not realize how muc htrade routes were needed in this game until I played with them. What a perfect addition.

We call that "The Gandhi".

My first culture game is dragging on a little long at this point. I feel like I've learned some important tips though:

1. Culture civs can (should?) be bigger now. The policy slowdown is greatly reduced. Also, it seems more important to keep up on research.

2. Just rushing to make culture buildings isn't a good idea. Instead, it's more important to keep specialists in the guilds so great works keep getting made. Of course, you still need space for those works.

3. Archaeologists rock! Build landmarks in your own territory and plunder artifacts from elsewhere. (Side question: does improving tiles destroy sites? I didn't have any sites near my core cities and I wonder if that could be why.)

4. Theming is important for wonders. Mouse over the "+0" in your culture breakdown to see the theming requirements for each wonder (and museum).

5. Napoleon is a jerk. He has huge culture without even trying.

Quitting Steam and signing back on fixed that for me.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Culture victory is, fortunately/unfortunately, now not really about culture, but about spamming tourism. Very rarely will a GA/GW/GM spammer fall very far behind in the culture war.

As such, I believe you no longer need to limit yourself to 4 cities or whatever, go for that ICS, just get more Great Works.

I poked around the options and it says I have "God and Kings" enabled. Is that just because the mechanics are bundled with BNW? I honestly can't remember if I picked it up at some point during a steam sale and never bothered actualy playing it

BNW is near standalone, the game is feature complete with it and vanilla, the only thing G&K adds if you have BNW is the civs and scenarios found in G&K.

Well, a lot of the tourism buildings convert part of your culture per turn into tourism per turn, so there's still some degree of culture required. Grabbing natural wonders and wonder spamming can help your tourism out a bunch, and great person tile improvements can also help a lot. Combining war and archaeologists to steal other's cultural heritage is also effective. So overall there seems to be a LOT more to do when going for a cultural victory besides sitting in your own corner of the world liking the smell of your own farts now.

Looks like this is still region locked in Europe. Despite the Steam Store saying otherwise.

I've been sitting on this for three days and still can't play or even download the Expansion.

It controls how many mountains there are, I believe. Older = bumpier, newer = smoother, unless my memory is faulty.

The changing of commerce from tiles to trade routes is having a big effect on my early game. Now you must build caravans to avoid gold shortages, they are not cheap, which slows down early game progress. Maybe I just need a different strategy, but with all the extra stuff to build, a slow down in production/growth hurts especially bad.

I know this may be a tired subject, but can someone direct me to some newbie resources to pore over? I really want to get into Civ, but my (very) brief encounter with Civ IV and some Paradox game left me scared and confused. I've always loved strategy games, but I've never been able to get into this genre. I'm not looking for tips or tricks, I'd just like to learn the fundamentals to construct my own playstyle at first. Optimization can come later.

Also, does this expansion pack require the base game?

Thanks!
