Civilization V Brave New World |OT| More than Content Tourism

The features they 're-added' in G&K were not easier to make just because they had already existed in previous games. The name of the feature might be the same but the mechanics, implementation and balance all have to be scrapped and remade.
Yes indeed, they rebuilt espionage and religion such that they don't share much in common with their counterparts in 4 other than name.

I really hope I'll be able to use my $30 Amazon 2K credit from pre-ordering Bioshock: Infinite. Suffice it to say getting this expansion for free will yield far more enjoyment than Bioshock did. It's not letting me do it yet, but I'm assuming that's just because it's a pre-order.

One thing I will say about the new civs, there's a slight "is that it?" feeling now that Venice has come along and changed the rules.

I agree with the OP that some like Poland seem a bit drab in comparison.

Or take Rome, poor Rome :lol

Their UA wasn't much to look at to start with, but it got worse with Gods and Kings when their nemesis and their successor state both got UAs that were far, far more interesting. Now another successor comes along and makes the problem even worse.

I'm almost of mind to replace it with something with a bit more historical flavor, I'm thinking something technically challenging like letting Rome build ships and siege weapons they destroy in combat.

Rob Zacny, writing for IGN, gives the expansion a 9.4. Normally I'd just be like 'lol IGN' but Zacny is one of the good and honest people and his just reading the first paragraphs of his review clearly points out that he speaks from a position of knowledge on the game.

Kotaku loved it as well.

I certainly value Rob Zacny's opinion. I would imagine they'll do a 3MA podcast of Brave New World.

Ideally combat would be won by strategy and having a better production line than the other civ.

Positioning and tactics are just another facet to it... I like this much better than was was in CIV4.

So I need to thank EuroGAF for putting me back on the Civ Train. It's all I want to play now and even having not played it for like a year I am thinking of pre-ordering the expac right now. Game is so good... I wish the multi wasn't so borked though and I also wish there was some sort of single player "Campaign" instead of choosing all the settings. I never know what settings I want to play and or what difficulty I should be setting it to.

Settings-random leader, any map script you feel like playing
difficultly-whatever setting you lose to about half the time

Not hard! I really want to emphasize random leaders, yes there are some stinkers and yes this setting is extremely punishing on higher difficulties, but it's the only way to play. Adaptation to situations and exploring new lines of play is what makes Civ so engaging.

Multiplayer is being overhauled around the same time BNW drops (that patch is BNW-independent, last I heard), and there are a ton of singleplayer scenarios you need to check out, Freakinchair! And almost all of them allow you to play all the different sides, take the fall of rome scenario as an example. You can play the western empire, the eastern empire, the persians, the huns, the celts, the vandals, it's wide open.

What else is being done to multiplayer? All a cursory google search turned up for me was the addition of the hybrid/pitboss modes, which already happened.

A few friends and I tried to give multiplayer a go last night, but it was nigh unplayable. Within 30 turns or so, one of us would always drop, then be unable to rejoin (if there's a workaround for that, we never stumbled upon it).

Very excited for this expansion, mostly due to the new civs. Venice and the Shoshone sound pretty unique (the latter sounds a bit like Ethiopia, which I'm enjoying a lot lately), and Polynesia seems to synch up with my standard play style pretty well. Assyria just looks plain badass.

Any word whether this has some sort of cultural diffusion mechanice that lets you convert other cities tiles to your own on the balance of superior cultural output from your territories?

If you place sufficient tourism (which is better referred to as 'outward cultural influence, but w/e that's a mouthful') on a Civilization with low cultural output, then they can either adopt your way of life or their cities will start defecting to you. Culture here works a bit differently in Civ5 than 4-it's about having your cultural ideals trump all others in the minds of the people around the world, transcending nationalism.

The best source for getting your head around the way that the in-game culture shocks and influence works is to look to the revolutions of 1989 and the cold war struggle between democracy and communism. These are clearly the historical "basis" for the model that BNW adopted.

as usual i'll be playing at normal difficulty and still losing.

if you want to get better (some people don't care and just like playing) post a save at turn 50 and another turn 150 to a dropbox and someone here will take a look.

Debating on streaming this tonight on Theodora/Immortal to mess around with the new religious features. MELIMA, bitches.

I see.

I miss the tile-flipping from CIV3 and the eventual city defections that it wrought :D

Closest i've got to it in CIV 5 is with the cultural diffusion mod, but never had any cities flip.

Sounds good though, i'm usually a cultured warlord when i play

i want to get better. that's why i'm scared to go online because i know i'll be vaporized, as humans are smart, the AI (no multiplayer) sometimes dumb :).

noob question, what dropbox?

i win sometimes

Sid Meier said on an interview that he is not the better Civ player in the world. He just enjoys creating a civ and watching it prosper and trying not ge killed. That's the way I like to play.

I'm pretty damn excited about this. It's probably the last big Civ update we'll get for a few years so I'm happy it's getting very positive marks.

Yeah, and it's the way to play it right. Finally we'll have an even more complex and satisfying way to play a good peaceful game.

The IGN review has me even more excited. I won't have time to play BNW until the beginning of August, but I'll be eager to read everyone's impressions.

I always turn off all the winning conditions except Domination so the game keeps on going and going because I play pretty peacefully myself.

One time I nuked a small, culturally advanced Civ into the ground. Millions dead, their land a glowing wasteland. I needed to do it-they were my rival and were a concern-but I felt kind of bad about tearing down six millenia of distinct cultural uniqueness in the span of a single turn.

I have well over 1000 hours in this game and I'm generally a highly competitive gamer. But this game - this game is where I go to relax. I only play on Prince, I'll restart often if I don't like my starting position or somebody beats me to a Wonder I was needing, etc... I'm a totally pussy when it comes to Civ V and I love it. It's a giant sandbox for me to play in.

Has there been any mention of new map types? 95% of my games are on Small Continents, because it's really the only map type I like. I'd love it if more of the specialized map types (desert, hills, etc.) came in the round variety. I dislike the flat maps and their borders.
