Civilization V |OT| of Losing My Religion, And I Feel Fine...

I don't really mind the AI in Civ too much. Since Civ is, at it's core, a board game with a complicated rule set and a shit tonne of pieces, your opponents are in the same boat as you. They just wanna win. If being nice to you, amassing an army, and then wrecking your shit can get you out of the game, that's actually the "smart" thing to do. Germany pulled that shit on me. Haven't played in so long, only had a few cities, and then all of a sudden I was dealing with more units than my small nation could handle.

I'm having a lot of fun with the new patch. Feels like it runs better, or it could just be the turn tracker on the bottom of the screen. I'd like to get a multiplayer game going with some people. I mean, it's probably like Monopoly where everybody just says "I fuckin' quit and I hate you and your family" ten hours in, but it could be fun!

It was discounted, but not by much. I think the lowest I saw it hit was like $22.99.

I would have bought it for that but I bought so many other games for much, much less, that I decided to just sit on it for now. I'll see what it drops down to for the Halloween or Christmas sale, and hopefully I'm through my backlog of games enough to feel good about spending over $20 on an expansion.

Welp my wait is over, I bought Gods & Kings today for $7.49 from Amazon. Going to install tonight, start a new game, and proceed to spend most of my holiday weekend conquering the world!

Hey All, new Civ V patch. Just some slight fixes.

Hot-Fix Patch Notes

CRASH
-DX9 Range-strike crash. A city-strike or ranged unit could cause the game to crash when playing in the DX9 version, mainly in full-screen, but could occur in windowed mode as well.
-DX9 Cascading graphics failure crash. On certain video cards, after playing for a short amount of time (or across a number of short games), the game could exhibit strange graphical behavior (rapidly blinking graphics, terrain unloading, etc.), which could eventually lead to a driver failure or hang.
-DX9 multiple start crash. Fixed an issue where the DX9 version of the game could become unstable or crash if started multiple times in the same session.

BUG
-Auto-Annex, no pop-ups bug. Fixed an issue that was causing the pop-up queue to stop displaying in-game pop-ups until the game was reloaded. NOTE: The cause of this could also exist in existing mods. Please see our note at the bottom of the change-list on how modders can correct this.
-Mod constant reload. Fixed an issue causing mods to constantly reload each time the user visited the mods area. Could also cause modded saves to be corrupted or crash on load.
-Denmark Trait not working. Fixed an issue causing Denmark’s trait (allows disembarked units to have an extra move after landing) to not function correctly.
-Inefficient Pathfinder issue. Fixed multiple issues with the pathfinder that was causing units to exhibit inefficient movement choices.
-Exploding workboat graphic. Fixed an issue where the Workboat model exhibited graphical corruption.
-Grey terrain/checker-boarding. Fixed an issue on slower video cards where terrain displayed in large quantities, or with rapid draws (like clicking rapidly around the mini-map), could cause the game to unload the terrain system, resulting in large amounts of checkerboards.

OPTIMIZATION
Multiple Terrain optimizations.

Hope everybody is having fun conquering the world! I think the game still needs, in my opinion, a few more Civ DLCs, maybe something as beastly as Beyond the Sword, but it's at a really solid place, right now.

Got this game from gaffer some weeks ago.

The first game I had lots of fun, it had the default settings. Culture victory. Then I started my current game, after trying some map sizes(big is boring), where I just want to farm land, expand my cities etc. and then this cockhead Bismarck declares a war on me. I load an earlier earlier save and gave Bismarck some money, horses. He seemed happy for a few rounds until he declares a war on me again.
Okay, I don't have any military units so I start building some military units, mainly boats. I manage to fend of his attacks against one of my cities, he's only attacking the closest one by the sea. The idiot sends all his troops through sea so I just take them out with my galleys.
He tries to make peace with shitty terms to which I tell him to fuck off and start making ground troops. I start blasting his nearest city with my warships and cannons, Bismarck tries to do peace again with shitty terms and I rightly decline. Then I conquer one of his cities and burn it to the ground and make peace for 100 coins.

Bismarck and I are friends for 30 rounds or so until he builds a new city close to where his burned city was, farther away from sea so my galleys can't hit. He starts building an army with more modern weaponry, much more modern than mine. Few rounds later the wanker declares a war on me again.

And all I wanted to do was just farm some land and build cities. But no, Bismarck made me quit the game. Haven't played it in a week, might erase my saves...

Absolutely. Their stubbornness and sometimes irrationality makes sense from a historical point of view, and since I am also prone to break alliances and declare war, act strangely by putting tiny island territories on a continent that's all theirs etc. I find the AI in Civ to be pretty funny.

One of the "silent" rules of all of the Civ games is this: even if you want to play a peaceful game, you still need a strong military. The AI civs will turn on you if you are perceived as a weakling (none to little military units). In every game, no matter what victory condition I am going for, I do my best to field the strongest military in the world. Peace through strength!

Well I played a couple of hours last night, brand new game. It's been awhile since I played Civ V (not since March according to steam, lol) but I had forgotten just how pretty the game is. I'm up to about 1000 BC I think, and so far it's not much different than before. I managed to get enough faith to make a Parthenon, seems like an interesting civ-wide bonus system to me. I do like the new quest system and reputation bars for city states, that's an improvement.

I'm gonna play more tonight and this weekend, but so far it's not much different than vanilla Civ V, just a few little improvements here and there.

Gods & Kings doesn't add a lot, the main addition being religion. However, what it adds is, in my opinion, a fantastic mechanic and fleshes out the game a bit more.

- New units are always. More of a neutral type of thing. What I liked is the new techs/units/buildings made playing any type of warfare better.
- Religion is more of a new type of currency than a game defining mechanic, like in Civ IV. It truly adds a great layer of depth that wasn't there before. Same with spying. Both are great mechanics as they're not hamfisted into the game. They work like they've been there since the beginning.
- The new Civs are great. Since religion is designed the way it is, the new Civs taking advantage of that mechanic don't feel too powerful or too weak.

I got it when it was $30 and didn't feel ripped off. At a cheep price, it's a steal.

The AI is always going to look for a weak spot. They're playing a game with their personalities. Alliances are there to help them win. While different Civs are more trustworthy than others (NEVER TRUST MONTEZUMA), they're still trying to beat you. If you're so focused on your victory condition that you fail to build basic defenses, then they will take your stuff. It's a harsh lesson to learn.

In Civ V there are a lot of basic starts, but regardless make sure that you take the time to build an Archer in each of your cities in the early games and, when you get Construction, you upgrade them Composite Bowman. Having four cities with one CB a piece and a few extra sitting around are, generally, enough to keep people nearby from smashing you in the face.

Usually. If they are stupid enough to push, defend, kill their units, and rush one of their outside cities. The thing to remember is the AI can get pretty focused on hitting you when you're not armed the same way you are. It's one of the reasons I always take the Religion perk to have 30% increased building defense.

Just balance it out. If you're truly aiming for cultural victory, you want to pick a civ that builds tall instead of wide, so you have less to defend. A few archer's you can upgrade to bowmen with construction, and keep upgrading, and a few warriors you can upgrade to swordmen with iron working and you'll be able to hold your ground. Go to crazy though, and you'll be spending too much money per turn maintaining your army.

Good luck!

Finally got G&K, now i can play Civ V (G&K improves the AI diplomacy, no? One of my main issues with vanilla Civ V).
Steam sale, -50% (so... 15€? Didn't pay really attention). Didn't find that 7.something$ from Amazon.
Oh, well. EDIT http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=44607399&posted=1#post44607399

Now to re-learn how to play Civ V, been sometime since i played it...

The AI is still the AI. It's better, but not perfect. Won't go for end game push at times when it should, won't take advantage of certain weaknesses, not too good at using specialists, but it's certainly more than functional.

So the Cradle of Civilization maps, are they all set sizes, or are they map scripts that can scale up should I want that? Kind've a dealbreaker if Italy, for instance, can't fit more than a couple cities before it's maxed out.

Finally bought the expansion and it crashes about every 10 turns. FML.

How do you make right click move units? So annoying having to press M every time.

They are all preset maps, but most of them are rather big. Not worth it unless you like playing on real world maps.

Verify your game cache? And you can mouse move by just right clicking on the tile you want to move to. Holding down right click will show the distance guide.

Oh hey I'm a full member yay.

They actually had a chunk of updates specifically for Windows 8, however you'll not want to use them if you don't have a touch enabled screen.

Are you choosing the Direct X 9/10,11 or the touch enabled version?

So I won my first game with Gods & Kings, here is a quick rundown of what my impressions.

I played my first game down on Chieftain level just to play around and get a handle on the new stuff. Not surprisingly I won by a landslide, diplomatic victory in 1945. My empire rating was 2480 while the next closest civ, England, was down at 884. I had tanks and helicopters and patrolled the seas with carrier groups while the rest of the world still had cavalry and pikemen. I'm definitely going back up to Prince or King on my next game.

My initial early reaction to what G&K added was lukewarm, but now that I've played through a whole game and played around with religion and espionage and such, I feel pretty positive about it. It's not a mind blowing expansion like Swords was for Civ4, but it's all continual improvement. I noticed some new resources, new techs, new buildings, and new wonders. The new mid-game units, while nice, aren't too game changing. Religion however adds a nice mechanic to the game. I love being able to choose between the bonuses during the game, that gives the player the opportunity to adapt to whatever situation or victory condition you've decided to pursue. And even on Chieftain I got into a few religion battles with other civs. Had a few cities where I needed to buy a missionary or an inquisitor to keep my border cities from being converted by Sweden and Mongolia. Also found out the hard way that other civs with religions don't like it much when you go blatantly converting their own cities.

The new city state changes to the quest UI are much better, good step forward there. And while espionage seemed very lackluster to me at first, after I figured it out a bit and started playing around with it I actually really like it now. At first I just let my spies sit in my cities and it seemed like a boring mechanic. But after I finally figured out how to put them into opponent cities and such, I started seeing the good stuff about espionage. When my spies started feeding me info about England massing an army and planning to march on a border civ, and then told me that Sweden was planning to break our defensive pact and declare war on one of my ally city states, yeah I thought that was pretty cool.

All in all it's made the game better for me. Of course I paid $7 for it so it was a good deal. Had I paid $30 I think I'd feel a bit slighted. I still wish the diplomatic screen was better. I miss the graphs and charts from Civ 4 so much, it was so easy in Civ4 to compare each civ's military, economic, and culture strength at a glance. And I wish Civ 5 had the global politics screen from Civ 4 too. One screen showing every leaders portrait with colored lines connecting each other depending on pacts and allys and war and trade agreements. Civ 5 has a great interface, but the info screens are still not as good as Civ 4 IMHO. Hopefully the next expansion addresses those.

Whoa, nice. I just started a new game after months, with Gods + Kings, so it'll take a while to try it out. But I was getting annoyed with not being able to see relationships when they proposed war pacts and stuff... this looks to solve that.

Are there any other must-have mods that improve the experience?

Same question. I just getting back into civ 5 and want to try out some mods that can make the experience better? Any recommendations?

I just bought the expansion a few days ago and I find that the Austrian ability to outright purchase a city-state after being allies for 5 turns is grossly overpowered. I abuse the shit out of that and win easily. That is a lot easier than I do when I play other empires.

At least it is better now compared to before the patch, where Austria could purchase the city-state the turn they became allies for just 500g. THAT was broken.

So I got this game in the SteamSales, GOTY edition, is that the full game? or I am missing some dlc content?

If it's anything like the boxed GOTY edition, you have the game and a bunch of DLC, but not all of the ones they released later.

The list I wrote is at home, but during the BF sale, I wrote down all the add-ons that the GOTY added to the base game and bought the other DLC Civ's (like the Koreans) that weren't in it.

This thread seems to indicate that I correctly bought the only thing I was missing, but I'm pretty sure I'm still missing (and don't want) the map packs and scenarios: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2807305

Has there been any analysis of how this game manages to build 20 units when you're barely as many turns into the game? I get steamrolled so fast in some of my games. It doesn't happen very often but often enough for me to notice it.

At higher difficulty levels the AI cheats. They get all kinds of production bonuses and unit discounts. Instead of the AI getting better at higher levels, ala a game like Galactic Civ II, the AI in Civ V just gets to cheat. It's how they challenge a good human player, simply swarm and outproduce them.

Admittedly, I'm only average at playing Civ V, so I stay on Prince or one or two levels above it. Prince is where the AI is on even settings with the human player.

Got this day one and didn't like it as much as IV so I stopped. Started playing again yesterday and it's pretty good. Just completed my first game on Prince/Standard Civs. Was France and was doing really well with my only nemesis Khan to the East declaring war on me every so often. Got up to 13 cities but then just about everyone declared war on me. Gah.

Won with Rameses then had a lot of bad games. I think it's impossible to win going with the barb/fighting policy from the start. Currently playing as Wu Zetian...man this chick is overpowered with the cho-ku-nus. Have 14 cities as I'm about to get my second policy tree filled up.

Played my first game of Civ V today (and a complete Civ newb - my friends convinced me to pick it up) and played with Gods and Kings as well. A lot to learn for a newbie :p ended up expanding a lot but not worrying much about military. Silly of me :p especially when playing with friends - I shoulda known an army would be coming to steamroll me eventually. Ended up fending off one of my friends and holding a contested town but couldn't manage to defend my other border quite far away from my other buddy allied with him. Attrition won out, but I put up a good fight. They kept wondering how I had all these forces :D.

A lot to learn, but a great purchase. Hopefully having Gods and Kings won't ruin my "original" Civ experience, but I think the more to learn the better (only improves my play in the long run I think - but I am gonna play on an easier difficulty). Lots to read.

If it kind of overwhelms you, you can turn Gods & Kings off and just play a couple turns of the base game until you have it all down.

need help :

- have a coal tile 1 tile away from one of my expansions
- have built a mine on the coal tile
- have built a railroad to the coal tile
- have allocated civilians to the coal tile

I still ain't got no fucking coal.

I'm new to the game. Sejong just offered me to sign a declaration of Friendship. Should I accept or is he going to stab me in the back?

Sejong is pretty safe to be friends with, so long as he keeps up with you. The only problem with him is is he'll start claiming land near you, then get mad when you start claiming the same land for yourself.

In my experience, always be wary of Bismark, Montezuma, and Napoleon. Those guys are just looking for a reason to invade, and they pump out units at a seemingly ridiculous rate.

That's weird. Are you sure the mine was completed? I've had a few issues where my workers stopped working on a mine and it appeared to be completed.

I swear man, the mine reached 5/5 and they stopped, then they started over 3 times. After 200 years or something they finally built a mine.

When starting out, how many military units do you guys create? I've noticed that, especially with Civ 5, I always seem to just have a couple wandering about and one fortified in each city. But then another civ declares war and turns up with ten units inside my borders.

I don't want to waste the beginning of the game creating military, I'd rather use that for spreading out and growing. But obviously I'm being battered by not being wise enough with military.

He's a bit of a pushover. Defend whatever city he goes after with a ranged unit in your city, and chase down whatever you can when he retreats, without getting in range of any of his cities. If you have the units to counterattack, burn one of his cities to the ground. He'll settle down after that.

Depending on how spread out the map is, the starter warrior, a scout, and an archer to fortify a city. Then I build units according to the current global situation. I chase Wonders and social policies, which means I generally keep my number of cities as low as possible until mid-game, when I start rapid expansion through conquest against whatever AI was foolish enough to start messing with me.

So, I've wasted hundreds of turns trying to take over a nearby city-state, only to be forced into peace, then that bitch Isabella declared war on me! It all went downhill from there so I just reloaded a save from waaaay back in time.

So on the last page I said I got G&K today. Played a bit as Boudicca. Notice the slightly different layout of the tech tree. The settler bonus being on the bottom in the second social policy(forgot the name). Also it appears everyone has 100 health. I guess it makes more sense for more fair damage instead of numbers from 1-10, so if you had 7.6 before it got rounded either up or down or however they programmed it. I played one map of Boudica on Prince to get the feel of it and accidentally purchased a work boat when I had settled one and started anew on a different map. There I had Mt. Sinai in my second city, got faith from ruins and quickly founded a religion. Picked my bonuses and 5 turns later Caesar steam rolled me. =(

Definitely pretty interesting the expansion. Do the traits I pick as religious founder affect whether or not people will accept my religion or attack me?

Not directly, no. Some traits can increase the religious pressure you exert as the founder, but another Civ or city-state won't resist your religion because say, you're based on a hunter god or something. If a Civ attacks it'll be due to competition in spreading your respective faiths.

Someone more versed in the game can correct me though.
