Clothing clipping, how much does it bother you?

How much does it bother you, 1-10, 10 being the most bothered.

Red Dead Redemption 2 was noteworthy in how rarely clipping happens. You can equip all sorts of weapons and clothes, but Rockstar somehow accounted for them. Commendable. I bet there was a person or team who spent months working on that.

I wish they would put that time make that wanted system not broken.

It entirely depends on the game, if the game has any solid attempt at immersion it's big problem. Can't have certain beards with certain clothing combinations in W3 and RDR2 for example.

Depends on what is clipping per se

Bethesda games are just a "fuck it", so needs more fix, but some stuff like in Zelda is fine

I voted 9 because I strongly dislike it, but I dislike clothes that are pasted on the 3D models even more. Things like straps that seemingly cling to the body when the person bends over, skirts that are glued to the legs regardless of movement, jewelry that hovers or looks glued in place, etc.

Hey thats Cohh!

I think it looks sloppy. Especially if it's on a character/NPC that only has ONE design.

For every game that clips, we should list games that do a pretty decent job of not clipping.

I remember FFXVI doing a pretty decent job with the main character’s cape. The way he kicks it as he runs is very satisfying. It’s not perfect, but I bet that took a lot of effort to pull off.

What other games do good in this category?

Annoys me. Hair clipping too, ponytail clipping all over the place, into the backpack, gun, whatever there is, they almost always clip

Last year CIG showcased their tech for cloth physics for Star Citizen, looks amazing

day 2 with more details on how

They found a way to do it without being as computational heavy as traditional methods. This has to work in an MMO and for every players

Probably more to see next week.

10/10 whenever someone calls it 'clipping'.
Terminology abuse is terminally painful.

Anyway cloth-sim collisions is where the whole "physics-computational load scales exponentially - not linearly with complexity" - comes into play in full.

Proper simulation (cloth, water, hair, physics) was the direction I wanted the industry to go in around the ps3 era.
The hardware still needs a fair bit of catching-up to do before that's viable.
Although this - more than all the pixel blahblah - is where ML acceleration could help - but until enough people cry about it as 'the' visual defect - it's not gonna happen.
And saddest part is - it still has to be treated as 'cosmetic defect' to get attention in the first place.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Doesn't bother me while playing as much, but a screenshot or something like that gets deleted if I see it.

I don’t care. It’s a reminder that these are games lol. Can be off putting depending on what the clipping is. Thats not all there is. There’s also things like textures or other data that you see appearing in the distance. It doesn’t affect my enjoyment for a game. It’s not an issue like frame rate issues that can break a game.

Sometimes I notice it. But it's not game breaking.
Clipping was so common in the PS1 era, that I became immune. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Really doesn't bother me at all, I'm not usually picking at things like that but instead playing the game. Now if it was a game about costume design then, yeh, that would bother me.

Not a deal breaker like the lack of good ragdoll, but noticeable enough, the worse is when you have both armours and hairs clipping.

Barely bothers me at all in most games. Depends on how excessive and in your face it is though.

Add clipping to the loooooong list of things I wish developers would focus on instead of fucking RAY TRACING. The most boring, inconsequential technology I can think of that has somehow captured the mindshare of studios for the last 5 years.

No,clipping doesn't bother me that much but you know what bothers the hell out of me...having the entire landscape and grass spawning 5ft in front of you like in Elden Ring on PS5,that shit is embarassing and takes you completely out of the game.

The fact that pop in is still so prevalent in gaming in the year 2024 shows how much this industry has failed technology wise.

Maybe instead of higher resolutions devs should focus more on improving LOD systems and better postprocessing and animations.

Instead here comes 8k pssr...to see in even more clarity how the entire map spawns in front of you while you're walking to the beat of a snail. Genius!

I’d be more than happy with lesser fidelity graphics with no pop in and good detailed collision. But thats a tough sell on a screenshot says Mike from Marketing

Not as much as weapons clipping. Especially those long spears and big swords cutting through stone walls and trees.

Nanite should solve that because everything always use the best lod, but i'm not sure if it work with grass.

Rdr2 had very low popin for a ps4 game.

Also long weapons like a spear that go through walls are annoying at first, and it's actually a problem that has been solved, but takes some resources (need more collision detection and then some kind of inverse kinematics) and most developers prefer to focus on the visuals instead :/ To me, this is part of the visuals.

Many ways to go about it. Maybe artists could mark/vertex paint a few critical spots on the mesh and developers could employ a super optimized physics solver on those sets of vertices. One could even do it all on the GPU after animation is processed.

It is very doable but not a priority among all the other features. But yes, now more than ever there is enough GPU and CPU resources to do this, at least for 3-5 characters that are closest to the camera.

Doesn't bother me at all.

I voted 5 because I understand the implications of fixing it.

If a game performes awesome but has clipping a 1. If a game performs badly but had clipping it's a 10.

I mean, it's better if it doesn't clip, but actual cloth physics that has clipping issues is INFINITELY better than the stupid plastic shells devs keep trying to pretend are clothes.

Just look at this garbage. It's disgusting. This isn't the only reason I dropped off of Valhalla, but it definitely contributed.

Now look at this prerelease demo for AC Unity:

Look at those gorgeous coat tails. It's mesmerizing. Is there clipping? Yes. Is Valhalla better because there's less clipping? FUCK NO.

There are good examples for sure,RDR2 was amazing in that regard but for the most part games have terrible pop in and that side of technology hasn't improved much since the PS360 days. Sure,Nanite seems like the "next thing" on paper but we shall see. Does Wukong use Nanite? Cuz it has some bad pop in on objects from what I've seen in videos.

Yeah wukong use nanite but i'm fairly certain that the game has a problem with texture loading and not as much as a pop in problem, i think the game always use the best lod for everything but sometimes texture don't load properly.

Also i'm not sure if nanite can help with simple 2d vegetation.
