COD 4 Beta Thread

Damn, this game ain't for novices. Only hardcore fps'ers need apply :( I'm getting killed constantly and the game moves very fast.

I signed up and got a token but ain't all that bothered about playing it if the key will work for you then you can have it. Just PM us.

Hehe not to sound smug or anything but...

me 1st 30 kills, 2nd 5 kills.....

I think they need to change the kill things u get, plane, radar ect

Yeah, but it's annoying as shit to play with oor against a team that just sits there.

It discourages moving-without-thinking. Even on the high-speed games (Domination, TDM), the players who place themselves and move with skill are going to have a big advantage. That's why you'll hear comments like CitizenCope's; someone running through a big open area without having a handle on the situation are more-likely to get shot in their silly, silly head.

Not sure about that...it's not the fastest FPS I've played recently and personally I think it's relatively arcadey in that you can sort of jump in and play without getting owned too badly.

Ok, campers can get annoying, but I don't feel this is as large of a problem as the last 3 pages make it out to be. Perhaps it's the attitudes towards camping that really should change. I play the beta for roughly an hour or two every day after work, and tend to follow a "run and gun" style adapted from the competitive counter strike days of my youth. From my experience, this is how I view the minor annoyance that is campers:
If I know where the camper is, I essentially see this as a free kill; I make my way over, and I can choose how to engage this camper, a choice the camper does not have giving me the competitive edge (imperfect vs perfect information.) If I only know a vague area regarding the campers whereabouts, I see this as a challenge, and begin a systematic sweep (often this creates the illusion of a real combat situation). This is a squad based, militaristic FPS. If you hunkered over to Iraq (which I don't recommend btw) do you expect the opposition to be wildly roaming the streets? Well, they do... but chances are in live combat situations many enemies would be at a fixed, semi-hidden location that provides adequate cover. Running down the street will surely get you killed. Rather, a systematic, methodical approach is how one would deal with these situations. I, for one, appreciate the challenge and level of realism these "lazy" players provide, and at the same time thank the developer gods for the kill cam (though this 'authoritative' view is wildly frustrating in it's own right). Perhaps those unnecessarily flustered over these players should return to a FPS more fantasy-oriented... such as the beloved Halo2.

On a related note, I don't have a surround sound system yet. How do footsteps play into your strategy? Are they at all audible, and if so, can you determine an approaching player's location off their footsteps alone?

They're definitely audible - I can tell if someone is there. I usually can't pick up exactly where they are, though.

For the most part, yes. (if the area is fairly quiet, durring an airstrike or a huge gun battle, not so much).
 
does the beta run at 60FPS? My first match and it felt insanely quick, almost.. too quick. I like how it takes so few bullets to kill, but i got killed alot because of this. Everyone i was playing with was a pro, calling airstrikes and jumping through windows and i was just sitting there with a 2/12 k/d ratio :lol

'A' button jumps through windows.

Pressing right on the dpad opens up a map with which you call a strike (only after 5 kills in a row though, which isn't too difficult once you have a grasp of the maps)

Sure does. Only slows down when there's lag.
 
About the COD4 beta tokens from GameSpot. I got in long time ago, but I got another token from GameSpot.

Is the key tied to the gamertag you download it for, or can I give the key to a friend? Does anyone know this?

There are complaints about various aspects of the play, but the game itself runs GREAT (when you are not randomly teleporting around from rare lag) and is super-smooth.

And yeah, when everyone is playing "correctly" it's a damn fast paced and exciting arena :)
 
Played 15 games or so today and only one issue. On Overgrown a guy was on top of the house with the turrett in it. Is that a glitch or is it easy to get up there?
On another note today was fun. Lots of new players out there. Had a best +24 k/d in one game thanks to them.:D
 
Man this game is gooooo-ood. I seriously enjoyed it more than the Halo 3 BETA.

Didn't lag much other than 2 oe 3 matches I played last night. This might sound wierd but it reminded me of Counter Strike a LOT. But a much better version. Lot of fun.

Halo 3 has a fight against it for online supremacy that's for sure.
 
Just got into the beta. Played a lot last night.

Anyone who says the game is balanced with the stats system is a liar. Its really annoying when everyone has the good scope and weapons while you have the basics. It really does make a difference.


Having said that.....i feel i am hopelessly addicted The level design is PERFECT.

i´m in.... but sorry.. I was expecting better graphics.. I´m not a graphic wh0re but the whole game did not blow me away. Going to investigate more....

I know, a couple of pages I said maybe they could cycle 1 or 2 maps for the rest of the beta.

Just take out 1 map ( OVERGROWN PLEASE ) and put in another for the rest of the beta time..
