This is glorious. I don't even know why I want Kiffin to fail. I should buy the man a drink for the heartburn he caused Tennessee, but his overall douche level demands that I root against him. Kind of like John Manziel. *glares at Andy*

It's okay man, I hate both of them too.

I think it's safe to retire the "Mark Richt has lost control of.." and change that to "Lane Kiffin has lost control of his players, etc." Another phrase that can be accepted, "I blame Lane Kiffin" or "I blame Kiffikens."

Part 2

In 2008, Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant was named second-team academic All-Big 12, a salute to players who best combine athletic and scholastic achievement. There is no disputing Bryant's on-field accomplishments as a sophomore -- he was second in the nation with 19 receiving touchdowns -- but several teammates and two former assistant coaches scoffed at the notion that he would be honored for his academics. "You didn't have no choice but to laugh at it," says Victor Johnson, a Cowboys safety from 2008 to '10.

According to Johnson and one of the former assistant coaches, it was well known that Bryant would not go to class unless shepherded, often by a football staff member, and that tutors did a majority of his coursework. "He just wasn't supposed to be there. There's no way he could do the college work," said the former assistant coach. "Once he got there, he was connected with the people that would help him." Calvin Mickens, a cornerback from 2005 to '07, says he also saw tutors do coursework for Bryant.

We HAVE been needing a replacement for "I blame Obama" for a while now.

Light bulb goes out, or you get a speeding ticket? "I blame Lane Kiffin."

You just blew my mind.

I've been using the Mark Richt one for that situation for a while now, but I agree, it's time for a change. Especially since there's not much for me to blame Richt for now, but it's clear that the inmates are running the asylum at USC. Guessing that Kiffin's already interviewing at D II schools.

Lane Kiffien is the reason there was a period of a few days that Urban Meyer seemed like an "ok guy." Back when Lane disappeared from Knoxville in the middle of the night, giving us this gif:

For this, Lane Keffin is a horrible person and should be melted alive in a bucket of shit-lava.

About JFF, Doug Gottlieb wrote a pretty good article concerning his past, what JFF has done, and the argument over whether athletes should be paid. Probably not going to change any minds on whether they should be paid or not, but you can clearly see how much he regrets his past actions of ignoring the rules (and breaking the law).

Selfish to my teammates, who were now down a point guard. Selfish to my dorm-mates at Dillon Hall, who would now lock their doors after I stole the sanctity of what should have been their safe haven. Selfish to my family, which had sacrificed so I could have this incredible opportunity and would be stained by this. My coach, John MacLeod, never made the NCAA tournament the program seemed destined for, and was fired along with his entire staff after what would have been my senior year. Seventeen years have passed, and I still draw a straight line between what I did and the fact that MacLeod and his assistants Fran McCaffery, Terry Tyler and Parker Laketa had their careers impacted and families uprooted.

...
Which brings us to Johnny Manziel, also 20 years old, who is being called a selfish college athlete too and will probably come to regret the actions of his younger life. Common sense and logic dictates that, in spite of the lack of evidence needed to suspend him, Manziel didn't sign all those autographs purely out of the goodness of his heart. What he allegedly did wasn't criminal -- what I did was -- but we put our teammates, our families, our coaches at risk in much the same way.

Johnny has that same arrogance I had. The difference is nobody was putting me on the cover of Time Magazine, making me a poster boy for why college athletes should be paid.

The Time cover is stupid, and JFF is a terrible example of why CFB athletes should be paid above their scholarship.

A standard cost-of-living stipend would probably be acceptable to most people. Also, any player whose number is used to sell jerseys should have royalties put into a trust while they're in school, so they can receive the money when they move on to the NFL/graduate.

The thing is...they do get a cost of living stipend. I know what softball players got at my school, and that was more than enough to get by - including travel and selling equipment (which is against NCAA rules but people do it anyways so tough).

I thought this section was really thin.

A series of accusations with no evidence provided, typically with a denial from the accused party immediately following.

I believe the Dez stuff to an extent (just from what I've heard about his intelligence level and punctuality).

Besides that, I don't know how you can call any of this stuff damning.

I dont think its the SI article you should be worried about. You should worry what happens after its all out, NCAA may stick their nose in and really start looking into things.

Seriously. The SI article harms public perception; the NCAA is going to dig a little deeper after asking for SI's sources.

You're both right.

But considering the NCAA doesn't have subpoena power (and a big majority of the accusations happened several years ago) I'd be surprised if they can hurt us too badly.

I was really expecting a lot worse from the first two days of articles. Now I'm just annoyed that we have to wait 3 more days for the rest of this thin article to be published.

Prepare to be surprised.

Unless the program had a magical come-to-Jesus moment in the last year or two, It stands to reason that much of the shit going on is probably still going on, or at least did until the university found out what SI was up to. That means there's likely plenty of fresh evidence for the NCAA to uncover.

Oh, and today would be Bear Bryant's 100th birthday. Could be why Texas A&M/Alabama is this early in the season.

So what you're saying is that SI probably scared them straight when they started snooping around?

LATIN, MATRIPEDICABUS, DO YOU SPEAK IT
Vegas books had one of its best weekends ever:

“I have been in this business since 2000, and this was one of the best NFL kickoffs sportsbooks have experienced,” said Sportsbook.ag’s Mike Perry. And he said that before the favored Texans failed to cover on Monday night against the Chargers — the biggest win of the week for more than a few books. Yes, the bettors got crushed.

...

In terms of the college game, the action was on Notre Dame at Michigan, with the bettors profiting on the favored Wolverines. Bovada was an exception, citing Florida-Miami as the larger bet game. Overall, bettors suffered a moderate college football loss for the second week in a row.

Handicapper Teddy Sevransky first pointed me to this week’s eye-popping case of just how aware college coaches are of the Vegas spread. North Carolina, favored by 19.5 against Middle Tennessee State, led by 27 late in the game. MTSU had the ball, and NC’s defensive starters were out of the game. MTSU scored with 25 seconds left and then recovered an onside kick at midfield. North Carolina, up by 20 with less than a half-minute remaining — again, favored by 19.5 — proceeded to put its defensive starters back in the game! You can bet the alumni appreciated it.

This Saturday will be dominated by Alabama at Texas A&M. The Golden Nugget’s Aaron Kessler expects the influx of bettors in Vegas for the Floyd Mayweather–Canelo Alvarez fight to drive a big handle all weekend. The marquee NFL game of the week is Sunday night’s battle between San Francisco and Seattle, but according to Boyd Gaming’s Bob Scucci, it might not generate the expected action: “Two teams are playing each other that the public loves to bet. The average bettor likes it more when real good teams play real bad teams, rather than good teams playing each other, or bad teams playing each other.” Next Tuesday, we’ll tell you the truth about what happened in Vegas over the weekend.

A lot of easy money most weekend.

I dunno man. In hindsight, definitely. But before the games the spreads are generally so stupidly accurate relative to public perception as to almost always give one pause. Even if you know cfb really well and "know" so-and-so is gonna "blow out" so-and-so, you look up and see the line is 33.5 and it's like, "ummmmm ...."

Bet the farm on Louisville this week.

I dont bet the huge spreads, but I generally will put some money on the smaller spreads. Went big this week on Louisville.

im going to get screwed

I agree. Most of the time there are a few lines that are way out of whack each weekend.

I don't bet myself, but if I were going to CFB would be my sport of choice.

People who bet on the NFL, on the other hand, are truly insane.

Did Kevin Williams make a lot of money playing at Oklahoma State? "I wish I did. I wish they paid all the college athletes."

So far I haven't seen anything in the SI reports that make me think there's much to all this. Does anyone care if tutors do research papers?

I think everyone assumes it goes on to some extent, but the important thing is that the university investigates instances of potential academic fraud. Don't want to get nailed with the dreaded "lack of institutional control" charge.

Also, another player quoted (Chris Massey) has apparently denied what was quoted, and said that Evans didn't take notes or tell him their discussion was being recorded.

Gondo, seriously, please stop and let the dust settle. Regardless of whether your spin turns out to be true, I'm losing respect for you with every post.
I thought it was fair to respond to what squicken posted.

I'll try to keep everything in the thread about the scandal from now on.

Sorry if I annoyed anyone else.

Well, it'll be up to Alabama to either reinforce The Manziel, after creating him last year, or finally bringing him back down to Earf.

If you fail, we might have Notre Dame undefeated levels of annoyance to deal with afterwards.

Though I do hate Alabama, so I'm torn here.

For people who are talking about betting, I generally bet each weekend on cfb.

However in Australia you don't have to bet a spread and you can just bet on a straight win. We have bets called 'multis' where there are more than one bet multiplied together and you have to get them all to get the money.

For example, I generally bet 7 or 8 match multis where the odds end up being about 4 to one, I.e. I put one dollar on and get four back.

I win about every second week. So generally I put $50 on and it makes watching more interesting.

However this season I have not won because of Clemson in week 1 and Texas in week 2.

We have those in the US. They are called parlays.
