I just noticed in that picture of Penn State's place that there are silos and a farm within walking distance of the stadium. What the hell.

I think we can all agree that most schools' stadiums look better with people in them. When they're empty you can see where all the renovations took place over the years. Sanford Stadium (UGA) looks really nice to me, and I don't notice any of the obvious renovations that some have above.

I still can't get over Penn State's steel girders everywhere. Who thought that looked acceptable. At least cover it up with some kind of facade.

i did have a post typed up with a picture that doesn't look like a mockup and has the minor league baseball stadium and tailgating lots around the stadium but i closed the tab on accident

stadium def was better without box seat additions. view of mt nittany was beautiful but then money in college sports happened. dont really think it looks as bad as bert makes it to be

here i found it! only 1 farm and university owned for ag students!

Also, I think it's a matter of when, not if, that Nebraska puts a dome or some sort of retrofit roof on the stadium.

That bowl hosting money.

The Coliseum!

XAUI0iNl.jpg

Still due some renovation but:

- Only stadium to have twice hosted the Olympics
- A National Historic Landmark
- Hosted 2 Super Bowls, including the first one
- Hosted World Series games (Dodgers), including the largest crowds ever at World Series games

... and has a space shuttle just across the parking lot!

Now that the train stops immediately between the USC campus and the Coliseum (well, technically the Rose Garden that adjoins it), it's awesome to go to.

fixd.

also, I worked an event at the natural history museum adjacent to the stadium a couple years ago. Didn't have time to walk over to the colosseum to see the inside but from the outside it looked pretty nice.

I joined for Erin Brockovich discussion
only notable thing that happened at the coliseum, was Jack Bauer killing a bunch of American Oil Terrorists.

I'm knocking it strictly from an aesthetic standpoint. Obviously you guys do a great job at creating a raucous atmosphere, which is every bit as important as aesthetics for making a great college football stadium. (Though please stop throwing shit at our band.)

And as a farm kid myself, I'm certainly not going to knock it for being next to a farm. Hell, the OSU dairy farm isn't terribly far away from our stadium, either. We're land grant schools. We've got farms.

I can't see that happening myself. I love my state and the Huskers as much as anybody, but who would host a bowl in Lincoln in late Dec / early Jan? I know NYC is doing one now, but that is also NYC.

Also, do low-tier bowl host cities even make that much money?

Golden Domers are chickenshit!!

Depends upon what conference your bowl is affiliated with and how well the fans travel.

It's looking more and more likely that due to injury to redshirt sophomore Michael Brewer our starting QB for the SMU game and at least part of the rest of the season will be true freshman Davis Webb. His backup will be either redshirt freshman Clayton Nicholas or true freshman walkon Baker Mayfield. Brewer, even at only his 3rd season on campus, is the oldest QB we have. The only other QB not mentioned above that's listed on the Fall roster is Collin Bowen, another true freshman walkon.

Webb has been putting up legitimate competition for Brewer since he go to Tech in the Spring as an early enrollee, and even though Brewer has always had the edge in the competition Webb has been incredibly impressive thus far. Plus, being an early enrollee he's at least been around for 9 months and gone through Spring practice, so he's at least more advanced than your traditional true freshman would be.

Mayfield is an interesting case for a true freshman walkon as well, and he's been making some noise in fall camp (ran with the second team offense in a scrimmage last Saturday). He had offers from a few D-I schools (Rice, Florida Atlantic, Washington State, New Mexico) but was holding out for a TCU offer. When TCU took a different QB in January his options were a lot more limited because the other schools had already picked up different commits. He still had some offers on the table but decided to walk on at Tech for a step up in competition rather than go scholarship at a small school. He played high school ball at Lake Travis High School, former high school of Michael Brewer, Garrett Gilbert, and Todd Reesing.

We're hoping that even with starting a true freshman out there we should be okay as long as the quite shallow OL depth holds up. What's that you say? Tony Morales, oft-injured OL who's been penciled in as a possible starter, has been saying on twitter that he's in a sling and dropping other hints that he'll be out for a while? That's great.

No way Lincoln will ever be a bowl destination. Outside of the coastal bowls that are in travel destinations I think I can count the bowl games north of the 37th parallel on one hand.

True enough. Either way, I can't imagine the cost to throw a roof on Memorial would be offset by what I would expect to be a low-mid tier bowl at best.

That and I really don't think the fans would want a roof in the first place. I know I don't at least.

How lucrative are bowl games anyway, outside of the BCS bowls?

Is hosting a shitty bowl game with bad attendance really worth it?

My impression is most bowls only survive because of TV money. I'd wonder how much of that actually trickles down to the stadium/school/city. Sure you get exposure for the city on national TV, but I don't imagine it's a big money making venture in most cases.

I get the land grant thing, UGA is a land grant university as well and has a pretty large agricultural school. They just have all their farms for that a bit further away, they're actually right down the road from our baseball stadium. But they're a few miles away from the football stadium.

My main gripe was all the steel girders. They should cover those up.

Isn't that what Tennessee is doing (or did already?) at Neyland? They had the same problem as Penn State, what with the girders being exposed and all.

I remember hearing a while back that they were overhauling the exterior.

It looks like they've redone at least part of the exterior. I'm sure jjasper could probably give us a better rundown on what they did in 2010. All that urnge.

Fuck if I know what this is about.

I know how this one goes.. The cable guy comes over wearing a Bama hat and she asks him if he can fix her cable so she can watch the new Finabaum show that's coming on the SEC network. And from there, he doesn't actually fix her cable. They just end up watching old Bama games recorded on VHS tapes.

UGA freshman RB, Brendan Douglas, had a good night at a scrimmage last night. I'm really only mentioning him because I'm shocked that a white RB can run a 4.47 and did 7 carries for 50 yards on the #2 offense going up against the #1 defense. That's impressive given that he probably didn't have many holes to run through, and he was reportedly hard to bring down. Apparently he may have also hurdled a defender (scrimmage was closed to the media). Pass blocking is supposed to be good for a freshman too. So if he keeps this up I could see him getting some carries this year.

UGA has another scrimmage next Wednesday night, they're doing these at night to try to get ready for the night game at Clempson.

I'm guessing the white helmet was kept to appease the traditionalists. That same Smokey color or some type of orange would've looked better.

Not really a fan though. It's a slick looking uniform but it doesn't look like Tennessee.

Oh man, how could I forget? That just makes it better!

Yeah that whole area is pretty cool. Haven't been to NHM in a while, I should go again sometime.

While we're posting pictures of stadiums...

From this:

To this:

Hold's the world record for "Largest Brock Structure in the World."

1. I can't tell what University that is
2. The first picture has more cars than people in the stadium. Was football a side attraction while most of the people were there for other events?

1. Doak Campbell stadium at FSU.

2. Probably. Football in the 50s wasn't very exciting, save for Lee Corso.

People were there for the circus weren't they. I watched some mini documentary about FSU's circus.

The circus is usually in the Spring, but it's quite a possibility.

People make fun of FSU's circus a lot, but it's actually awesome if you've ever been to it. I've seen every show since I've been here, and the talents rival any show I've seen from Barnum and Bailey (minus the animals, FSU doesn't do animals). It's pretty spectacular. Factor in the luxurious women FSU is known for and an entertaining acrobatics show, and it's a really, really fun show.
