College Football Offseason: FEAR THE TREE (and other non-threatening PC mascots)

Yeah like I said probably would have done it for a home/neutral site. Ohio State seems to be in the business of only scheduling teams who are willing to play here as well. Or at least thats what the schedule up to 2020 is showing. Navy is the smallest school weve done a home and neutral site with, all our other future games are home/home with big BCS teams.

Props. Schedule real-deal or go home.

I don't see what the big deal is. Teams really are just scared to lose, aren't they? The name of the game these days is tee-fucking-vee. Get involved in as many high-profile games as you can; gimme some LSU, Miami, Clemson, USC, Texas & Florida already. Michigan's 2015 is Hawaii, Colorado & Ball State. Why isn't that shit Texas A&M, Colorado and Florida State? Or Hawaii, Auburn and Oklahoma?

Grow some fucking balls. Get on TV. Profit.

Only two more weeks until I get to see Nicholls State get obliterated in the hot Eugene sun.

Although I might be going to PAX. So maybe not. Lol

So, who's getting GTAV and for what system?

We gotta have a crew, it's time.

IT'S TIME.

It's mostly sec teams with lsu as the exception. You think Georgia would've learned from the Boise game to hide behind their sec schedule if they want to get to a bcs game

It's looking more and more likely that due to injury to redshirt sophomore Michael Brewer our starting QB for the SMU game and at least part of the rest of the season will be true freshman Davis Webb. His backup will be either redshirt freshman Clayton Nicholas or true freshman walkon Baker Mayfield. Brewer, even at only his 3rd season on campus, is the oldest QB we have. The only other QB not mentioned above that's listed on the Fall roster is Collin Bowen, another true freshman walkon.

Webb has been putting up legitimate competition for Brewer since he go to Tech in the Spring as an early enrollee, and even though Brewer has always had the edge in the competition Webb has been incredibly impressive thus far. Plus, being an early enrollee he's at least been around for 9 months and gone through Spring practice, so he's at least more advanced than your traditional true freshman would be.

Mayfield is an interesting case for a true freshman walkon as well, and he's been making some noise in fall camp (ran with the second team offense in a scrimmage last Saturday). He had offers from a few D-I schools (Rice, Florida Atlantic, Washington State, New Mexico) but was holding out for a TCU offer. When TCU took a different QB in January his options were a lot more limited because the other schools had already picked up different commits. He still had some offers on the table but decided to walk on at Tech for a step up in competition rather than go scholarship at a small school. He played high school ball at Lake Travis High School, former high school of Michael Brewer, Garrett Gilbert, and Todd Reesing.

We're hoping that even with starting a true freshman out there we should be okay as long as the quite shallow OL depth holds up. What's that you say? Tony Morales, oft-injured OL who's been penciled in as a possible starter, has been saying on twitter that he's in a sling and dropping other hints that he'll be out for a while? That's great.

You know my history with Chris Level and grains of salt, Monroeski...but is he serious that Baker Mayfield might be the man for the SMU game?

What's the word? Is it true he's winning the job with his feet, or is this just some scheme by Kliff because Brewer is getting closer to returning than previously heard (which was 4-6 games last I heard) and he wants Webb to keep the redshirt if at all possible?

I'm truly befuddled. Baker Mayfield wasn't even on my radar. Not because he's a walk-on (because he's from Lake Travis, his parents could probably afford the tuition) but because I had heard so many awesome things about Webb. (Elite 11 camp, "young Tom Brady" quote, ect.)

Are you as surprised as I am?

2014
Navy, Kent State, Virginia Tech and Cincinnati

2016
Bowling Green, Tulsa and at Oklahoma

all dat big time BCS talent at navy, kent state, bowling green and tulsa, probably be too exhausted after running through that to schedule a lowly school like us right?

the system is broken, and the playoff will prove if nothing else, that there are plenty of non-traditional powers out there

You guys aren't big enough for a home and home with the big boys yet. I understand your frustration, but thems the breaks.
There is also so much downside in the polls for big boys should they lose.

Along the same lines, if the SEC continues to keep the title streak going, it is going to get harder to schedule its teams for ooc games as it will get easier to leverage the subjective superiority (above its actual superiority) of its intra conference schedule. This came to mind since I finally got around to reading Ted Miller's conference perception piece at ESPN: http://espn.go.com/college-football/preview13/story/_/id/9560908/perceptions-bcs-conferences-real-imagined-college-football

Towards the end, he brought up an interesting situation starting to occur as a consequence of the SEC's success:
There's also the issue of self-fulfilling prophecy. If the SEC continues to dominate and defy the cyclical nature of college football dynasties, the other conferences will battle another perception: minor leagues.

"You've got kids you're recruiting on the West Coast who are like, 'Wow, I've got to go to the SEC,'" new California coach Sonny Dykes said. "'They've got more games on prime-time TV, and they've got more guys getting drafted. They've got this, and they've got that.' When that starts to happen, it has an impact on your program."
I thought about it in terms of 14 year old teens playing now, who started following the sport 6 years ago when they were 8, and who have only experienced college football seasons ending with a SEC team taking the MNC. If the streak continues just 3 more years along with high SEC representation in the final polls' top 10s, that has to start substantially factoring into the decision making process.

Each year features a big BCS school, no schools going to schedule 3 big time OOC games.

I didn't mention Chris Level, primarily because he's not the only source for all this.

Everybody's as surprised as you are, not only at how Mayfield has come out of nowhere but also at how Clayton Nicholas has seemingly dropped completely off the radar. Details are pretty sketchy due to closed practices and no media availability (though the media blackout will be over this morning; media has been advised to arrive on campus at 10:15). Nobody knew who Mayfield was until all of the sudden we heard he was running with the 2s at the scrimmage last Saturday.

I don't believe they're considering Mayfield to preserve Webb's redshirt one bit. After the injury happened in the Summer they already thought that Brewer would be ready to play again once and he made it through probably one or two practices before going down again. No way they put all their eggs in that basket again, especially with TCU being game 3. Whether they think Brewer will be back or not, whoever they start out of the two true freshman at SMU is the guy they think gives them the best chance to win the TCU game. That game is too important and too early in the season to be playing games with redshirts and potential availability of players.

All we really know is that Webb and Mayfield have been more or less splitting snaps, and when you're talking about starting a true freshman you wouldn't be splitting snaps this late in camp unless there is a legitimate competition going on. One of them needs to be as ready as he can be and splitting snaps just for the hell of it doesn't accomplish that.

Back in the Spring or Summer Kliff said they would name a starter after the second scrimmage, which is this weekend. Don't know if that timetable has been modified or not now that Brewer is out of it (at least for the short term) but we could see a choice between Webb and Mayfield by Monday.

We had to get used to writing a lot after those long days in Lubbock trapped in the house behind the walls of dirt that block our doors. The Infinite Jest was actually written over one weekend in Lubbock, true story.

I don't disagree, we should be more like Bama with our scheduling. UGA typically plays 2 BCS OOC teams a year with 2 Sun Belt or Conf USA type teams.

CFB Bros: I'm catching these feels a little bit today. Sorry to go a little OT, but today is my last day with my current company. I just started at this company less than 3mo ago, and while I do like the company, pay is good, and my co-workers are cool....it's a solid 40min drive each way (35min if I hurry). With my daughter starting kindergarten this week, and my little ninja due at the end of the month, it would be a logistics nightmare with me working 40min away from home. There's no family around to help. Just the wife & I.

Well, a headhunter contacted me a month ago about an opening near my house. Better company, more $$, and it's 2 miles from home. 2 miles! Two interviews later and I'm starting on Monday. I feel kinda bad about leaving my current company so soon, though.

Lots of change in my life right now.

Yes. What are you, the on-topic police police? :p

There's been an emphasis recently on getting community threads to stay on-topic and not turn into chatroom cliques. Halo-GAF got shut down for a while over it. Really our minor digressions are probably fine, as long as it doesn't become the norm. But I don't want to see anything happen to my beloved hot piss thread.

Also, what am I gonna do, talk about Cal? :/

The major difference is that HaloGAF hates every Halo after Halo 2. So all they do is moan about how the latest game isn't Halo 2 HD, which leads to them not staying on topic because they don't care about Halo4/whatever.

That wouldn't happen here because we enjoy CFB, and are excited for each new season. Sure, you SEC guys are assholes, but you're our assholes, and we love you. :)

whats up with that? I thought this was their entrance exam.

what happened with tech almost losing their academic accreditation?[/QUOTE]

That was just a paperwork deadline type of thing IIRC. Tech hadn't sent in some form the accrediting group needed by a deadline so they were put on probation. They later sent it in and all is well.

El Presidente!

I'll be at South Carolina vs. UCF later this year and it'll be my first time at UCF's stadium. I heard it kinda blows.
Tailgating scene competes with any in the country and the campus is nice. Stadium seats 45k and is all steel/aluminum. So yeah structure itself kind of blows but it's loud and serves our needs for now. And anything beats playing off campus at the Citrus Bowl.

Hoping the USCe game is night and not noon too.

Ricky Williams first day on the job as an assistant coach at FCS school Incarnate Word. When he applied for the job, Mack Brown and Nick Saban wrote unnecessary recommendation letters for him to get the job.

What's sad is, if Ricky Williams was a normal guy and applied for a school position, his application would probably have been tossed out as soon as the marijuana charges showed up on his background check.

Bert, I disagree with your statement on Michigan Stadium.

I've been to the 'shoe, and I love it. One of the best game experiences I've ever had. It feels very, very intimate despite its size (although, I'm sure the 50-yard line seats made a big difference).

Michigan definitely doesn't look as massive from the outside, but I think all the brick work makes it look very sharp and quasi-modern. And that sign is pretty sweet. Or lame. I think it's lame but other people think it's sweet.

My sister starts UCF next week. I'm to try to get her tickets for that unless she goes. I will go to at least 1 UCF game (since I won't be going to any FSU games this season).

How does one procure said tickets, and do they tend to be a better deal than resale tickets?

Stubhub is the safest, but most expensive way. Those are tickets that people are selling that don't want them, and then generally charge several times what they paid. Unless it's an ACC team.

The other way is buying scalped tickets outside the game. You always run the risk that they're either not legit tickets or that the person is an undercover cop, though.

I'm looking at Fresno state v Rutgers

True freshman Jared Goff named starting quarterback for Cal this season. Going to be some growing pains this year, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Kline get some time down the line if/when things don't go that well.

Why would you do that to yourself? Are you a fan of either team?

Looks like those are starting at $34.99 right now on Stubhub. But seriously, why would you go to that game?

Well for one, its the best game of week 1.

A top 10 team vs a top 15 team? Why the fuck not?

Secondly, I go to Rutgers and will be in Fresno that week.

Contact the ticket office of the Rutgers Athletic Department and ask about their allotment. They're probably still available unless they're sold out or they've been returned to Fresno State for sale to anyone/everyone.

Edit: Never mind, you already checked

Top 10 and top 15? In what year? Not this one.

But still, have fun. The safest way like I said is to go Stubhub if Rutgers says they're out of tickets. Otherwise, you can most likely get them for cheap at the stadium.

Did I mention I hate Stubhub? So many people just buy tickets now to sell on Stubhub and jack the prices up. Fuckers.

Top 10 and 15 in their conferences?

Anyway, appeal decision came back in the trial of the death of Ereck Plancher during a spring practice in 2008. Court kept UCF liable but ruled the athletics department is subject to sovereign immunity. Which means damages are limited to 200k and anything above must be approved by state legislature. Similar to the situation FSU had in the early 2000s. Erick died from complications of sickle cell.

The original ruling held UCF/insurance company liable for around $10 million.

Contact the Fresno State ticketing office.

Someone had told me no single game tickets for sale, but the website shows hundreds available starting at $30.

Disaster averted.

In fact the entire away section looks available. Looks like they didnt sell out, they just sent the tickets back.

Lol, those rankings have as much credibility as Obama these days.

My predictions about Rutgers last year were 100% correct.

so we tried to schedule ohio state for a mutual site game in 2014.....they declined

then we tried to schedule the same for 2015....again they declined

this on top of trying to schedule alabama, georgia and texas for this year. can't wait for the playoff
It's not our fault that UL is too afraid to play us at the Shoe.

As a student she should just need her student ID. I don't believe they have to register anymore. Either way they get in as part of their athletic fee.

I know single game tickets for USC and USF went on sale for season ticket holders. No clue when it will open up to the general population.

Most likely Rutgers didn't sell their allotment like you said, so they sent the tickets back to Fresno State. Those prices are so cheap, that's crazy. Almost as cheap as the seats I got for when UGA played at Kentucky last year.
