You guys didn't like AvX #2? I thought it was a good second-of-twelve issue; it appears to have gotten a good portion of "round one"'s big fight scene out of the way in a hurry, (hopefully) to advance the plot. Marvel is making it pretty clear that AvX Versus is where you want to go for the dragged out, expanded fights and answers to questions like (for example) "why didnt' Colossus go all Juggernaut on Rulk?".

OF COURSE I LOVED IT!!

Ish of the week was Invincible Iron Man, though. I've never been disappointed with the series but this issue brought it back to its best heights.

Also, how could you not love the clever narrative snippets throughout the action? Gems like "Organic diamond meets multi-billion dollar armor. The most expensive punch in history." Or even the succinct "Family reunion at Mach 5." Little descriptors like that helped make this issue.

I liked it. In a way it reminded me of the kind of asides Stan Lee would do back in his day, but updated for 2011. It embraced the idea of "okay so the Avengers and the X-Men are fighting now" and it ran away with it. Had they gotten an artist who didn't phone it in like Romita did, it would've been an excellent comic.

I didn't really like the art myself. Some panels were okay but others felt really off.

What big fights?? A panel of hero X punching hero Y does not a fight make. Those preview pages posted a few weeks back by Stuart Immonen with Thing vs Namor, now that was a fight comic. Dynamic, weighty, inventively violent. This just looked like people limp wristedly hitting each other. It was devoid of drama or tension.

And if the book's not about the fighting, then why was 80% of it pics of people getting punched? I can see the conflict between Cap and Cyke, and while I think it's a bit overdone I can see that there are reasons for it. This would have been better with an inventive take on talking heads, it looks retarded when you have characters arguing in multiple paragraphs during a fight.

And I thought the narrative captions were really dumb too, sorry! Who was meant to be narrating it? Was it a character or was it the onmipotent Marvel Voice with it's jokey asides and tongue in cheek, deflating the moment?

Worst moments - on one of the early pages all the X-Men are standing there talking, and in the midst of all these speech bubbles, Namor (I think, him or Mags) says "The time for talking is over" which made me lol on a page that was chock full of dialogue, and even carries on after his weighty proclaimation.

The other moment that made me do a wtf-take was Magneto fighting Iron Man. Mags is just floating there with his arms out and "energy" emanating from him and does precisely fuck all. He's the master of goddamn magnetism! Rip Tony's tincan arms off and shove em up his ass, or make them into a noose and garrotte the motherfucker! Adn then the narration even points out that Tony won't be going down that easy. Why, how? What does he have in his METAL FUCKING SUIT that can stop a man that can rip a suspension bridge from its moorings and screw it up into a tiny ball?? But no, Mags is too busy making GENERIC ENERGY BALLS to man up and do something awesome.

You can say what you like about movies, but they know how to make each second count - either from a story/character perspective, or from sheer entertainment. But this issue was full of wasted opportunities for awesome action, wasted beats where you could have someone do something badass. But what we got was about 30 men and women running around on the sand playing slapsies and it was flat out dumb.

Come at me bros :p

You've read the preview pages for Versus #1. You know EXACTLY why most of Magneto's shit doesn't work on Tony, because it's one of the first things they adress. Even if you didn't, you know that Tony Stark is pretty goddamn smart, and therefore would've gotten ready way in advance when he learned he was gonna go fight Magfuckingneto.

all that he wants is another baby
New wrinkle that may already be addressed: will Free Comic Book Day books be available digitally?

Back in the late 90s, Busiek was my favorite writer with Avengers, Avengers Forever, Astro City and the awesome Spiderman series he did (forgot about Thunderbolts). Not so much anymore (the last I read of his was Avengers vs JLA and that JLA series with Bagley, ugh.)

But seriously, I need Bendis off of New Avengers and The Avengers (I used to be hot on him, but not so much anymore, his Spiderwoman, Moon Knight and Ultimate Spiderman are/were good, but he doesn't do well with Major crossovers or team books.

And in regards to Ends Of The Earth, I like that Slott is tapping into Peter's intelligence but I feel like I'm in the 90s again with all these different suits. I also dislike some of the changes to Peter's rogue gallery (Doc Ock, Hammerhead, etc.)

I don't mind the different suits. It reminds me a lot of Iron Man, with having different suits tailored to different encounters.

Got home to find the Severed HC and the last Walking Dead volume waiting for me, good times. The Severed HC looks pretty nive too, no dust jacket woop woop! I read the first three issues in singles and I loved it so much I wanted to wait for the book so I could lend it around too. Scott Snyder is the best horror writer in comics, bar none.

Oh man, AvX 2 was one if the dumbest things I've read for a good long time. if you're gonna make a fight book, at least have some interesting set pieces in there. This was just a bunch of characters punching each other on a beach, it was so boring. And the art was shocking, so undynamic and dull, with some really clunky panels in there in places. There was one where Hope was looking out of the window and you can see all these indistinct bodies in a mist of sand, and it just highlighted how dumb the whole concept is.

comics, ladies and gentlemen...

Agreed. Like I said it made me long for Secret Wars. Ridiculous, and not even in a cool "big superheroes fighting" way.

Mischaracterizations ahoy!

I don't understand why Wolverine was about to stab Hope, though. So if he kills her, then what? The Phoenix isn't gonna stop because the host is dead, now the problem is gonna be even worse! Giant Phoenix Force with no host to attempt to control it!

Personally, I think the tie-ins are better then the main story so far. WATXM was amazing.

iAIcwSoKvluoO.jpg

Now I like this scene so much not just because it's adorable(but OMG ITS ADORABLE) and it's also gives a good sense of how far we've come since Schism:

prv9297_pg6.jpg

But it's also a great look into why Wolverine chooses to join the Avengers to attack Utopia. He doesn't want to go and fight his own X-men, his own race...but he puts the school first, so kids like Idie won't have to get involved with this mess. It's a hard decision, but Logan's a hard guy, and he can take the blows if the means protecting the people who depend on him.

Looks like DC is doing special numbering on the anniversary of the 'New 52.'

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2012/04/19/dc-comics-launch-zero-issues-for-september/

In September, it will be the one year anniversary of the DC New 52.

Do you think they were going to let us forget? Did you think they weren’t going to do something special? Across the range of New 52 books?

I understand that for one month all the original new 52 books will be numbered #0 instead of being #13. And that their #13s will run in October instead.

That the zero issues will reveal stuff that happened before issue #1. Year Ones, flashbacks, origins.

This might be the perfect opportunity, say, in Batgirl to show what happened in South Africa. Justice League to show disparate superheroes working a case, but who never meet. Batman, to see where the Owls were the night that the Waynes were murdered. Stuff like that.

Rather than One Month Later, it’s more like Five Years Earlier.

There may be some creator credit surprises as well. I have to say, it does strike me as rather fun…

My guess is, he couldn't bring himself to kill Jean when the Phoenix came for her, so this time he got extra stab-happy.

Did anyone check out Superman Beyond #1 this week?

I'm interested but it looks like 1/4 of a comic even though it's only 99 cents. Are all the pages one panel? Is it related to issue # 0 at all?

Hope actually asked him to kill her if she ever went Dark Phoenix, back in UXM #539.

In general, much (though not all) of the characterization in AvX reads better if you've been following Gillen's work on the X-books. He's not kidding when he says that his entire run has been building to this.

There was a story in UXM before "Schism", in which Logan had to save Hope from some kidnappers led by a dying former mutant. At the end of the story, Hope demanded to know why Logan would save her yet was always giving her the brushoff. This is the exchange that followed:

In AvX #2, Logan and Spider-Man sneak into Utopia looking to snatch 'n grab Hope before the other mutants catch on, and come across her standing over the unconscious bodies of her mutant friends and surrounded in the flames of the Phoenix. The plan changed.

EDIT: Father_Brain and I are on the same page apparently.

But he did kill Jean at the end of Morrison's run. He killed her out of pity when they were trapped in that space ship going towards the sun. That's what triggered the Phoenix to come out and revive her.

I thought it was a great idea making Logan wary and unfriendly of Hope because he thought that in the end he might be forced to kill her to save everyone else. I just thought that killing wouldn't be his first alternative.

I'm still liking the series and looking forward the next issues, those are just little nitpicks. And I didn't know Aaron wrote the last issue. I love the guy but he's always better on his self contained books. Schism was entertaining but had a lot of issues, while Wolvie and the X-Men is freaking amazing.

So DC is doing it's own Avengers vs. X-men next year? Count me in, it should be fun! I'm on Wonder Woman's team!

I wonder if they're planning it for awhile, or if they're just reacting to Marvel.
Actually, the trinity doesn't refer to them at all. Someone sent me scans of the comic, it revolves around what we saw at the end of justice league 6

lmao, I'm trying to just let it the fuck go already but good god that page is brown as hell! Why is the grass brown, and the school, and the tree and the sky? Is it just brown o' clock 24/7 at the JGS?

Uh, so I just found out that China Miéville is writing a new ongoing series for DC. Dial H. And that shit comes out in a couple weeks. Holy fuck.

Let's not forget, Logan still kind of blames Hope for Kurt's death
Speaking of Kurt, just how SICK was this week's Uncanny X-Force? That throwdown with AoA Bobby was simply amazing from start to end, capped with one of the coldest moments in that book's run thus far. A great one-and-done story.

And Fantomex is 100% certain to be offed now that he's had his taste.

I thought it was pretty hot, personally :p

But yes, UXF is back to being awesome, and the next 9-part big story "Final Execution" starts in two weeks. Besides the fact that Fantomex is TOTALLY gonna die, I'm hyped!

Also, the solicits state that McKone is only drawing the first two issues instead of three(Noto is back for #27), then Julian Totino Tedesco draws UXF #28-29. I think the story is nine issues, so I'm hoping Jerome Opena is doing the final four.

Yup. I just hate how this crossovers happen just because of sheer stupidity. Cap shows up with a cloaked Helicarrier and Avengers pulled from the B/C squads and expects things to go smoothly?

Wasn't there a thing with Wolverine and X-23 where he pretty much told X-23 that Hope was more important than everyone else? Completely lol worthy that he thought killing Hope would stop the Phoenix Force from coming back though.

When does comixology update with new digital comics? Will it be during the day tomorrow or do they go up at midnight?

The Fcbd book from DC I supposed to have a preview for this and it looks amazing

And yeah UXF was fucking amazing and so cold

EDIT: Holy shit, rereading Secret Avengers and i totally see that Remender is using other things introduced in UXF outside of Father. Mind blown

Bah, that's a coward's bet. My money's on Psylocke.

e: Speaking of bets, let's get some going for next week's Versus #1. I've got Magneto going over Iron Man and Thing defeating Namor. WHAT Y'ALL GOT

UXF 5.1 BAYBEEEEEEE

I do admire Remender's long-term plotting, it reminds me of Claremont's X-Men runs. Seeds planted 15 issues ago can sprout to life suddenly, and he's very good at dropping hints if you're paying attention, like two of the UXF villains this year got foreshadowed as Weapon Plus projects back in the DAS.

I read halfway through Perdido Street Station and it wiped away all buzz I had for that book.

Iron Man over Magneto: It seems like such an obvious thing, but Tony Stark is definitely prepared for that.

Namor over Thing: On the other hand, fighting Namor in the ocean? That's a bad look, Grimm.

After Magneto: Not A Hero, there's no way Magneto could lose to Iron Man. Plus, basically everything on Utopia is made of metal.

I would give Namor the win too, but I don't trust the writers. Thing should really just drop to the bottom of the ocean and Namor can just move on.

I'm strictly X in this crossover. I bet on all my mutants.

Have they revealed who is in all the VS issues? I want my Storm vs Black Panther fight.

Well, I just checked Marvel's website, and the cover to VS #3 may be a huge fucking spoiler for some of the fights. Be wary.
