yeah but i think Jim Lee's art style is bad too

I know these are just images, but he should be able to make the characters come to life and move around the panels. Everybody looks like they're standing still. Everybody has the same body type. There's always these useless hatching lines everywhere that don't communicate anything to me except confusion.

I give Quitely shit, but he knows how to use a character's body language to an advantage instead of letting speech bubbles say it all for him. I don't get that with Jim Lee.

He's toned down the lines quite a bit. Thankfully that trend is gone. The complaint about his characters being stiff is still valid though. He was miles better than his contemporaries when it came to anatomy and composition though which I think is why he was so popular. He could do the crazy Liefeld/McFarlane style and have it make some kind of sense.

I consider Lee a slick John Romita Jr.

JRjr calls his "style" a deadline style.

Lee is very similar, only he doesn't hit deadlines as easily; but he has the same shapes and forms repeated over and over.

My buddy was over here jizzing about Lee's Wonder Woman in JLA and I just don't see it. She looks like every other Jim Lee woman.

The thing that frustrates me about guys like Marc Silvestri is that he could have been so much greater. His UXM run feels ahead of its time, great storytelling, pop sexy X-men stuff that inspired Jim Lee and all its imitators. But he's happy just drawing big boobs and guns at Image Comics :/ McFarlene is similar in his waste of talent, but I never liked that guy's artwork in the first place, so I'm less upset.

In other news, woman is about to give birth to Venom!

woman-pregnant-with-venom.jpg

edit: Jim Lee has been drawing the exact same shit for over 20 years, with the exact same inker. He has evolved very little over the years. The kids just love it, apparently.

But then again, Alan Davis is drawing the same shit over and over again and I don't hate on him, so I'm not gonna harp on that too much.

Silvestri has declined big time over the years. At least Jim Lee is still as good as he was in the 90s. Silvestri is barely recognizable and atrocious at hitting deadlines :(

I attempted to read that McDaneil thing. He uses 45,000 words for something he can say in 45. He rambles and raves, and he's full of hot air and bullshit.

"John was MEAN! And WRONG! Let me tell you my Entire Life Story, so you can understand how Mean and Wrong he was! Huh? Actual examples of John being wrong? I'll get to them right after I explain how much I liked the cartoon and how hurtful John's statements were to me, because I liked the cartoon, which got me through some tough times, like my cousin Steve's battle with pnuemonia. It was a Tuesday, a sunny Tuesday...blablabla..."

The whole thing was a damn mess. The writing sucked, McDaniel sucked and its even worse he's done this embarrassing livejournal ramble of nothing to push blame anywhere else but himself, the marketing for the book sucked, everything stunk. For a book with a minority superhero to succeed, it would need some A-list creators and get positive buzz from EVERYBODY. But the best DC could do was put out this turd, adding one more log to the big fire that minority superheros can't sell for shit, we're all over here buying Geoff Johns' fanboy love letter to fucking Aquaman.

Sometimes I wonder why they even bother.

Fuckin' comic books, man.

John dismissed this information, and our strategy, entirely. In his opinion, Harvey and I were too concerned with sales and gimmicks and not legitimate story.

I was frankly stunned by his reaction.

lol

i hate comic books

And that site is so bad... only second to Ryan Sook for the worst website for a comic creator that I have ever seen.

At least static is ending soon. Such a waste. I would love to see a cyborg/hardware team up book by John Rozum and since cyborg is really brave and heroic and hardware is badass and bold they can call the book "The Brave & The Bold"

So I'm in the middle of reading Secret Wars for the first time. I started reading comics in the 90s and i've gone back to read various issues before then and the 80s is a crazy era. You get some great pieces that still hold up, and then you get some nonsense like this Secret Wars.

The art still holds up pretty well, but Jim Shooter's writing makes me appreciate the crop of writers we have now, or at the very least a change in writing styles. Clearly subtlety in dialogue and/or thought bubbles was not even an option for Mr. Shooter. And every single piece of dialogue ends either in an exclamation point or a question mark. Once i noticed it, I can't unsee it.

Misc observations
- The x-men are just off being a-holes that so far hasn't been explained. I'm thinking there's a reveal coming, because the professor is acting all sorts of weird. Although it is refreshing to read total dick wolverine again. I miss that guy.
- They have relegated poor Kang the conqueror into a 2-bit c tier villain. He hardly speaks and gets captured all the time. How the wrecking crew has more of a voice and action makes no sense.
- Poor Janet is just getting shafted left and right. She's the leader of the Avengers, is discarded for cap in like 2 panels, and then spends the rest of the issues so far crying, moping around, and being hit on awkwardly by Magneto (with disturbing results). But almost all the women so far aren't faring much better.
- 2 random women just show up out of no where. But hey i get to see how titania was created. At least some of the other villains are wondering the same thing as to where they came from
- Colossus and Reed Richards are some of the mopiest love struck saps i've ever read. Dude, sack up and stop whining about your under-aged girlfriend and/or your pregnant wife. Galactus is standing there about to wreck your shit! Same goes for you Cyclops! But you've always been a mopey dude.

And that is the half-way point. Why is this 12 issues long? The main villain hasn't even shown up yet! So far as far as retro epic events this pales to Infinity Guantlet and the X-men cross overs like mutant massacre

I have a Secret Wars TV shirt, did you know?

Its literally a 12 issue maxi-series tie-in for a toy line, and it reads like one! One that just so happen to have effects across the MU! Just wait until the Beyonder shows up with his Jheri Curl!

Reading 80s comics is like reading a Shakespeare era sonnet. Only comic written well from that era is Keith giffen's justice league books and watchmen

FINALLY finished the McDaniel thing. I think he's probably being completely honest, but it's a totally lame and pathetic account. It's like "Okay, fine, you were right, please never speak or write a comic again."

7 Page preview of AvX 1 if you're into that sort of thing. I just glanced over it enough to confirm 1. Phoenix, 2. Hope, and 3. Wolverine appears to want to keep the Jean Grey School the fuck out of it.

I liked that Wolverine is adamant on keeping the students out of this, but Steve's revised question "Can I count on you?" still gives Logan pause. He knows what the Phoenix is, he knows what it has done to all the X-men, especially Scott, but he just can't bring himself to actually fight against his fellow X-men so easily. I think that scene really rings true to the characters.

I like this preview. Its a lot of exposition, and there's a couple of clunky Bendis speech patterns in there, but it gets all the readers up to speed on the threat and what the heroes are gonna do about it. Personally, I'm siding with the Avengers on this one. You can't tame the Phoenix Force.

I was checking this out earlier and Romita Jr's art seems to be the best looking that he has done for a while.

The difference is Scott Hanna's inks. I say he compliments Romita Jr better then even the legendary Klaus Jenson. He inked all of JRJR's work on JMS' ASM run, and that looked fantastic, and that carries over here. Oh, and it doesn't hurt to have one of the best colorists in the business, Laura Martin, breathing life into all of your drawings. They've got a very nice art team going on here.

So yeah, I like this so far. If the Bendis/Romita stuff is this engaging, then the Aaron/Hickman/Brubaker stuff with Copiel/Kubert pencils should be awesome.

So i have been pretty much out of the comic book loop since i was 13, fast forward 14 years and now i want to get back into reading them, i did get into The Walking Dead a few years back which i absolutely love and recently picked up an Ipad 2 so i am looking to dive head first into some comic book goodness.

So basically i am just wondering what would you guys recommend? Doesn't have to be mainstream, doesn't have to be strictly Batman or X-Men i just want some recommendations of some good trades, new series, old series it doesn't matter.

So far in my return to the comic book world i have checked out The Boys and Invincible which i dig both, checked out a few issues of the new DC 52 and wasn't THAT impressed. Whatever you throw my way i will check it out.

It really just seems like a case of severe creative mismatch. If DC editorial wanted what both McDaniel and Rozum say they wanted from the book, they never should have hired Rozum to do it in the first place.

I also agree with McDaniel that a Static Shock ongoing probably would never have been able to succeed anyway in the current market, but hey.

It seems to be one of the better Bendis team scripts I've read, but as I mentioned in the AvX thread, the approach they've taken to make the book accessible - having the characters act as though the Phoenix hasn't appeared on Earth since 1980 - kinda grates on me.

Is the latest issue of Batwoman a new arc? Thinking of jumping on.

Batwoman is my favorite traditional superhero book from DC right now but this issue sucked compared to the first five. It's anomalous in that it's a recap book that kind of ties up all of the plot elements of the first arc but it felt like it would be confusing as balls for someone that hadn't read all the previous issues. It was total filler and didn't add anything new to the story. It was the equivalent of a movie montage jumping from scene to scene briefly touching on trivial shit.

If you've made it this far without reading it, just wait for the first trade. If you haven't yet go read Elegy in the meantime.

Well it still has 15 odd pages more to see if it reduces to crap.

i miss JHW3's art. :(

I miss all the theatrics and the gothic-chic panelling, and the framed double page spreads, and the varied stylization that distinguished friend from foe and hero from civilian. Now BW looks like every other comic book on the stands :'(

And who the fuck thought it'd be a grand idea to have Richard Friend, the guy who does inks for David Finch, ink over Amy Reeder??????? The lines didn't even look like they were hers when we got to the part of the book where Friend took over inking duties. :lol

maggie and kate getting nasty all over kate's apartment tho............................

All of that is true but the fact that the rest of this entire issue was throwaway material it doesn't even matter what it looked like. This was just a worthless issue. Filling time to keep JHW ahead of the curve.

As much as I love Penguin: Pain and Prejudice, I felt like the final issue moved a little fast. I think it's a story meant to be read in trade paperback form, so the story all blends together better. Either way, it was still a great read. Wish there was more of it.

And old news, but I finally got around to reading All-Star Western #5. Still my favorite book from the relaunch.

And even older news, I've had the Raphael issue of the TMNT microseries lying around and finally got around to reading it. The tease at the end was great. I also really like their characterization of Casey so far.

Batman and Woverine & the X-Men are two of the best books being published right now, you should totally be reading them.

On the iPad tip, I bought Jeff Lemire's Essex County on Comixology last night for £6.99 whichi is a fucking steal for a 500 page book. If you like weepy indie books you may dig this. There's a preview up there too to see if you like it. They've got a whole load of Top Shelf stuff on sale right now.

For a classic run, if you liked The Boys you may well like Preacher too, it's amazing stuff and one of those legendary books that you'll always say "I should have read this years ago!" about.

Static should have been a success plain and simple. Is the latest issue of Batwoman a new arc? Thinking of jumping on.

Why? Whenever I've come across the character he seems super generic and boring, like a D-List spideytype. What about Static should have made the book a success? The only way it would sell well is to have top tier creators on it. Even Rozum's previous book Xombi sold like shit, and that had Frazer Irving on it who is godly.

You also just described Invincible, which for some reason people really seem to enjoy despite being god awful generic and crapped out by Robert Kirkman. :\

So DC's doing Season 11 of Smallville in comic form.

via iFanboy

Smallvilleseason11.jpg

DC Comics announced on their blog that the fan favorite television show Smallville, which ended last year after 10 seasons would be getting some renewed life in comics. Picking up where the TV show left off, with Clark finally accepting his destiny as Superman, Smallville Season 11 will be written by former Smallville show writer, and writer of the popular pre-The New 52 run on Batgirl, Bryan Q. Miller. Joining Miller will be artist Pere Perez, who also worked on Batgirl.

This will be the ONLY reason I'll be checking this out. Batgirl was amazing, so I'll at least try anything this guy does from now on. Oh, also, something something digital:

Launching on April 13, 2012, installments of Smallville Season 11 will be released weekly with digital covers by Cat Staggs. Later on, the digital releases will be collected into a first issue in print, with covers by Gary Frank, in stores on May 16, 2012. DC did not reveal how long the digital releases, or chapters as they refer to them, would be, but it’s probably safe to speculate that if an issue is being released a month later, that these weekly installments may be around 5 pages.

Wouldn't it have been better to make a season 11 of the actual TV show to give fans some payoff for watching that shit for a decade? Seems pointless to make a followup where he's finally in the suit in comic form where he's been in the suit for the better part of a century.

I read the first big Invincible book and it's poopy garbage (and I love me some Walking Dead). I'm a 28 year old man, I don't give two shits about some 15 year old getting superpowers. It furstrates me how adolescent the comics industry can be sometimes. No, I really do not care about teen superheroes, get out of my face with that nonsense (exception to the rule being Ultimate Spiderman (honky and ethnic) and Runaways, they're just too awesome).

Static Shock is essentially black Spider-Man. I still have faith we can make that character work, but not with the way DC handled that shit.

I've heard from my co-workers at the comic shop that the series picks up in later volumes. I personally don't have any interest in the series since I think Kirkman is a horrible writer but people really seem to dig the book.

Really small pick up week for me this week: Venom (Blah), Scarlet Spider(which is crap, not sure why Yost keeps getting books), Wolverine & X-men (Dope ass book), Wolverine & the X-Men: Alpha Omega ( Was going to wait for the trade but can't resist Brian Wood), Conan (Another book I'm only picking up because of Brian Wood but enjoyed it.) & Thief of thieves ( which was surprisingly good.).

Anyone reading Luther Strode?

Dope ass mini-series that is going to get turned into an ongoing. If you're not picking it up you should!!!

So, uhh...Action Comics is pretty confusing and uninteresting right now. I've committed to one more issue before they cancel my monthly reservation on it. It just isn't for me, despite a fantastic start with the first two issues. I wish Morrisson would have just continued with the grounded Superman approach, instead of heading to weirdsville.

I'm dropping this Incredible Hulk shit. Its like its written by some Bizarro World Jason Aaron. Its even weirder when you realize he released two other VERY good comics this week with PunisherMAX and WATXM.

WTF

I love it, loved the reveal of the Perpetrator Of The Split, and it was the perfect choice. It's the worst art maybe ever.

On the flip side, really didn't like Zircher on the .1 Secret Avengers but Hardman DEMOLISHED it. Such a gorgeous issue.
