Just went to the CBS to get my weekly haul. They had every issue of WatXM sitting out on the shelves so I picked up the first issue. I have high hopes given how much everyone on this thread has been orgasming about this series.

Hey Phonogram fans...

I'm not a Phonogram fan (it's not my music, my country or my scene), but I know a ton of people dig it. And I can't deny that McKelvie's a great artistic talent.

FUCKING YEEEEEEESSSSSSS!!!!

Phonogram is one of my very favourite series, so happy it's getting one last go, it was a shame to leave it after 2.

Holy shit I just tried asking Gillen about more Phonogram on Twitter a few weeks ago and got shut down!

lol, that's one of the funniest gifs I've seen in a while.

I was gonna pick up all the back issues, but I figured I'd just read the pilot and see how I felt about it. Plus, if I do like it, I can always go on a WatXM binge this weekend.

As far as New X-Men goes, I am so glad I got the three hardcover volumes when they were first released. Way more readable. I have yet to buy an Omnibus. They're just so counterproductive. Absolute editions are bad enough, but worth it because of the page size. An Omnibus is just obnoxious and pointless, especially at that cost. But I might have to get the Simonson and/or Secret Warriors one.

Also GREAT news, Venom Circle Of Four was solicited for an Oversized HC. The tie ins so far are dreadful, but this means we get Tony Moore's best work ever in big size. It was also have the preceding 4 issues which were great.

This man is a liar!

My general preference for Omnibus is about 25 issues. Not too big like Simonson with 1000+ pages, but a good meaty size.

Look at this fucking thing

Invisible Omnibus

All three volumes, plus extra

1500+ FUCKIN PAGES

THAT IS TOO GODDAMN BIG

BUT I'M STILL BUYING IT

FUCK ME

edit: On Absolutes, I only have two, Absolute Dark Knight, and Absolute All-Star Superman. I absolutely(dohoho) love those stories, and needed to have them in super oversized artwork style. Otherwise, I just don't love them enough to pay the full monty for a handful issues. Or, if its like, Absolute Final Crisis, I already have an oversized Deluxe HC of the event on my shelf, so it's not worth the double dip.

Well, visually.

And also content-wise. But the next two should be great. Parker >>> Williams

Visually they haven't been as good as Moore's issue, but I've liked em. Especially liked seeing Sana Takeda drawing X-23 again cause I miss that book. :(

I took a peek inside the newer Punisher issues at the CBS today, to compare them to Ennis' Punisher Max run that I'm currently reading.

EWWW. What happened to the art? What happened to the plot? Why is Castle fighting vultures in the skies of New York City? Mucho disappointed.

Man what terrible luck of the draw you have picking up the one issue where Punisher is fighting the vulture. I still have no idea what that issue has to do with the rest of that book but it's nothing like that.

Marco Checchetto 's work is gorgeous. Though individual tastes differ, you will find people on here agreeing with me. As far as Vulture is concerned, it's the 616 not MAX. Rucka's run has been slow going but I am willing to bet that the story will only get better. If it keeps up the quality I 'll get the collected editions. Can't wait for Omega Effect.

Emphasize that Frank's world sometimes collides with the denizens of the 616 ? Rucka's probably the right person to ask , but I figure he wanted to highlight how Frank's war carries risks and consequences in a world populated with super powered bad guys.

They're using a different, better artist than you're used to -- Marco Checchetto.
What happened to the plot?
Not familiar with how Greg Rucka works? Slow build that works itself into a big bang, with strong characterization for the lead and supporting cast instead of cheap thrills.
Why is Castle fighting vultures in the skies of New York City?
Set in the 616 universe, where supervillains like Vulture exist (well, existed in his case), instead of the MAX Universe, which was Ennis's personal playground.
Mucho disappointed.
It's a different animal than you're used to.

Yeah I get all that, I guess I just don't remember what instigated the confrontation. It has been a while since I read that ish. All things considered, I stand by saying that tussle wasn't indicative of anything that has happened in that series before or since.

Vulture was hired to kill the Punisher. Simple as that.

i dont think they've read more than a few panels of the run to be honest. I went back and looked, vulture is in issue 2 i believe for like 10 - 12 pages, dead and gone. And while i was ok with someone not liking the artists style...the blanket statements "what happened to the art" as if the maxx series was just vastly superior in the pencils dept...im at a loss.

That Ghost Rider one was atrocious. Pencils desperate for inks, no detail. Really shoddy stuff.

Yeah, it wasn't great. Hey since you're reading that, tell me if you agree with this. When I finished the first issue where they introduced the Antitheses, X-666 (groan) and the brain monster were pretty obviously mirrors of X-23 and Hulk, but I was like 99% sure Ichor (which is Gods' blood) would be the opposite of Venom, and The Evangelist (Christian/Forgiveness) would be the opposite of the Spirit of Vengeance... Did I miss something, am I crazy, or did they totally fuck that up and switch the two around?

Teen Titans yes!

Bart Allen confirmed from the future, by someone looking a lot like XS with a Wanted poster in Interlac.

Robin goes to Virgil Hawkins for tech help! Static!

Kid Flash gets a far cooler costume and spits some Impulse speech while hyper sped up!

So gud!

Considering art is a subjective thing, I much prefer the art in Ennis' Punisher MAX. It's a lot more gritty and earthen and raw than the stuff in Rucka's Punisher, where the art style looks like every other superhero book out there. I don't know if this makes sense, but the art style of Punisher MAX just seems so different than your typical Jim Lee-type art, which seems to be everywhere else (including Checchetto). MAX's Castle looked battered, beaten-up, and weary. This new guy looks young and handsome and sprightly, like he took a wrong turn off a Calvin Klein runway and found himself in the Marvel Universe.

I also like the fact that MAX Castle was a 700-pound gorilla. When he threw a punch, I flinched. What a bawss.

Just stick with the Max run. It's the definitive Punisher and your pussy and bunghole will be stretched too wide after you finish it for any other phallus.... errr Punisher comic will satisfy you.

Picked up some Birds of Prey issue from last week since Satchy bought Glory.

God damn! Wally Wood Artist's Edition is a fucking monster of a book.

We're gonna need a bigger boat!

Sadly today is the one year anniversary of Dwayne McDuffie's passing.

I REALLY hate the art for the Braddock storyline thats going on now. Its just a mess and the exact opposite of what X-Force has been.

That'd be a pretty crazy error since they dove into it way more in the next two issues. It's possible that they just fucked it up, realized it, but ran with it anyway because of time constraints.

Maybe it's Stockholm syndrome, or maybe Tocchini was saving better stuff for this ish but I didn't find 22 as appalling as the past two. It was still pretty scribbly in parts and he keeps doing that damned thing where everybody has their neck stretched out like a roid junkie, but all the dragons and fantasy shit was popping this issue and there were fewer panels that I had to stare at for minutes trying to interpret what was going on in them...

Still, what I wouldn't give for some better art in this arc. The focus on Fantomex is finally starting to fall into place, the backstory of the ridiculous new villain and his ties to Fantomex, and all the wonderfully ridiculous, fantasy-themed, Otherworld nonsense are making it much more interesting than just courtroom nonsense.

I agree, UXF was good this week. They focused on the characters we actually give a damn about, so we get a lot of interesting conversations between Fantomex/Betsy, we see AoA Kurt grow into his role, and a really fun back and forth between Deadpool and Wolverine. The Skinless Man now makes sense to me as an antagonist to both Fantomex AND Betsy(for what her father did to him), and they really left me wondering how the hell our heroes get out of this one.

If they had got Alan Davis or something on this that would have been swell, but as it is, I like this story now. All of last year's book was so dark and violent, and the next big 9-issue epic "Final Execution" Remender promised will be his "darkest, grimiest, hardest-hitting thing he ever wrote", so this "Otherworld" story has turned into a nice palette cleanser with its fantasy setting. And note how "palette cleanser" stories in UXF still include skinless men and faces ripped off and body parts turned inside out, but I digress!

God I totally forgot about the face off. Feels like just yesterday Tony Daniel pulled it in Tec but it still made me giddy. Has Fantomex ever been seen without his mask on before? Does this count? lol

Not that I remember, far as I've seen he's taken off half his mask(like Skinless Man does to him here) when he was talking to Logan about joining X-Force waaaay back in the special preview issue.

:lol i hate you <3

It's Jedeye's fault!

Sorry to say but Birds of Prey was lost on me. I didn't care for the art which is that container line style that relies heavily on the colorist to save it. I do like how he draws faces, but overall - stop being racist and put some blacks on those pages.

Comic artists, can't spot blacks? No worries! Just don't use them the colorist may or may not add the lighting / volume to the characters you didn't.

The New 52 designs for Katana and Black Canary really suck too. :( Who is the lady with the tattoos?

I may be better off with pre-New 52 Birds of Prey just because I really dislike the redesigns. :(

Louise Simonson and Bret Blevins may have been the worst comic book team to ever produce a monthly book.

And I say this knowing Loeb and Liefeld have collaborated.

Motherfucker. . . >:|

I miss my Brett Blevins and his girls with perky little titties.

Which issues you read? 5 and 6 had a pretty lousy fill in artist. Jesus Saiz's stuff earlier was a lot better and used shadows. Not a ton. It's still a clean art style, especially in the faces, but it's still a whole lot better than the fill in guy who looks like he's tracing over Saiz's old shit.
