COMICS! |OT| August 2016. That's Rare Groove. Volume is Crucial.

Someone said that if Omega Men had been an Image book it would have won so many awards and gain a lot more praise and still would be an ongoing. How true is that assumption?

When Valiant takes up every spot on award lists there is very little room for anything else.

DC Universe Rebirth is so weird as a starter book to a relaunch that basically introduces something that DC isn't doing anything with for a year or whenever. What's the point? It's like having a zero issue to a book that doesn't exist.

You can say that about lots of the Rebirth #1 books that preceded the proper title #1s. It was a pure cash grab since most of them were completely unrelated to everything that followed. Batman Rebirth #1 was there biggest offender. Pure WTF randomness.

Are you talking about the current community, or OG FigureGAF? Big difference.

No clue TBH. I've never clicked on those threads. My full exposure to that world is where it cross sects with the comic thread.

Is there a good Predator book where the Yautja goes against Colonial Marines in a Space Station setting? Please no Xenos involvement.

Maybe among the older Predator books, but the current Dark Horse stuff is all kind of mashed together into big crossover stories like Fire and Stone and Life and Death.

Wow thanks for the help guys Stormwatch is really good so far and not nearly as nineties edge as I thought it would be. Jenny Sparks is awesome. Just read the issue set in Tokyo and man that was pretty heavy.

And the shitty shit Spacejockeys from Prometheus are always big involved, too, right?
These guys are a dealbreaker for me. That their look from Aliens turned out to be a spacesuit is worse then reconning the force into bacterias for me

I don't think they're too bad. The biggest problem with them is that they're these big guys who supposedly seeded life on all these planets, but we don't really learn anything more about them. They're just this ever-present enigma in the comics. Maybe Prometheus 2 will tell us more.

I got all of it during the last Dark Horse sale on Comixology but I'm only a couple of issues into Hell on Earth right now. I put it on hold to read some other titles first.

Haven't gotten into Abe but I have read all of Hellboy, Hellboy in Hell, and BPRD before this. Also got that Frankenstein book but haven't gotten around to reading it yet either lol. I've been keeping up with the Hellboy and BPRD 1950s stuff as it releases too and I'm enjoying it a lot.

Fantastic you've got some good stuff there then, especially the frankenstein book. Abe can wait, you'll know when you reach the point of hell on earth where abe kicks off, but it's a really good interesting series, it's a much more ground level book of how people are actually living in this disaster world, small town people trying to survive etc. That frankenstein book really blew the doors off though, lots of great stuff in that, feel like that one will be a really good reference point in years to come too.

If you've read all of hellboy in hell, you're further than me in some parts haha, wish they could crank those trades out at image trade speed.

From what I've read they don't even seem that intelligent either, just end up like Michael Myers in space slowly walking around killing people. I'm going to buy that Fire and Stone collection at some point it's super cheap digitally.

I bought the Library Edition. Really nice book.

Are you reading the current thing they are doing? I've only caught the first two issues of Defiance but I don't think that is tied into anything. Pretty good so far and even has a little Isolation nod.

I'm a few issues behind, but I've been reading it, yeah.

Awesome! Glad you're enjoying it

So I just wrapped up the last mega arc in Starman. Grand Guignol. Man that was fantastic. Such an amazing culmination that just hits all the right notes, ties things together so well.

In my most recent re-read of Starman I think it's safe to say this is a series that Robinson got better at as it went along. The stories and writings were always good but from the mid poin to the home stretch it really starts this crazy good escalation of quality.

Now to read the final 7 issues. An amazing series and one every cape fan needs to read once in their lifetime. It has it all.

Jenny Sparks is indeed awesome, her character arc is so so good.

I just finished a reread of Starman not that long ago and now you have me wanting to read it again. It makes me sad that we don't get super long runs on books like that anymore.

Backstagers #1: OHHH MAN I can't believe I almost skipped this! Thank you BLL for bringing it to my attention, it's fucking delightful. I was a theater kid in high school so I know all about
the terrible creatures that lurk in the shadows backstage
. The whole book is super silly but in a great way. Highly recommended for fans of Steven Universe or Gravity Falls. That's probably all I have to say.

Glad you liked it!

Sat all night with my head buried in the cult of the red king. Won't say too much, I think I nailed most of my thoughts earlier when I wrote about chapel of bones but just wanted to update that damn, really epic arc, really enjoyed that. Felt really meaty, lots going on, just great all round. Peter Bergting is a really cool artist too, a worthy followup to Stenbeck for sure.

Should I read Inhumans by Jenkins/Lee before I read Inhuman by Soule?
Yes. It's fantastic. Also a great introduction to the royal family

I know what you mean. 80 issues with fairly consistent teams that manage to not be interrupted by events. Even its use of the events is unitrusive but yet are very impactful (especially Underworld unleashed)

And it's done, I've completed my 3rd reread of the series. What a great victory lap those last issues were. I've been wanting to do a reread for years now but I kept getting pulled to chasing my monthly upkeep of books. This year to save money I moved to "buy only on sale" and I'm now working in rereading great runs of the past into the mix with the new stuff too. It's a really enjoyable way to go. I think next up on my reread list is continuing Busiek's avengers and then it's time to revisit Gotham Central.

then it's time to revisit Gotham Central.

I wouldn't mind doing a reread of GC as well, it's been ages since I read the whole thing, I always find myself rereading the first volume then not finding the time to do the rest. Let us know when your doing it, might try and keep pace and we can get some chat going on in here over it

Finished American Flagg! That was some amazing comics. Some of the best action I've seen depicted in comics with some very creative layouts. It was very intricately plotted too and all the threads came together quite nicely in the end.

Raul is the greatest.

Spoiler

Killing and Dying at 2:07 and Patience at 2:02; From Hell and Black Hole at 4:51. We can be friends!

I haven't gotten around to Patience yet, how was it?

[To be honest, I was about to include it in an order but his interview about superhero fans put me off.]

You guys are making me want to re-read it but I have too many unread books on my shelf already. Maybe next year...

Paper or plastic?
So, I've never watched The Flash TV show but would like to watch some of it to prepare for Flashpoint and the crossovers later this year. Anyone have an abridged, "must watch" list of episodes?

I have to admit, I'm really enjoying the Suicide Squad Silver Age omnibus. I'm coming around to this silver age stuff. The plot development and writing were waaay more simple, but the stories were really FUN and inventive.

Also, the art is great and the restoration quality is AMAZING. Best I've ever seen.

Why does your video look like you are sneaking into the room Korupt, like you caught the room doing something.

We only call it shelf porn, it's not literal.

Is it literal?

So the Spider-Man + Deadpool trade that's out now is all reprint stuff, right? The first volume of the new series is coming out at the end of the month?

Who were in the original Suicide Squad?

We have Rick Flagg, Karin Grace, Dr. Hugh Evans, and Jess Bright. It was a very different comic than it became when Ostrander got ahold of it. This is more like Challengers of the Unknown. Pilots and scientists and stuff who go on these insane missions.

I kinda wanna give it a shot, but I think I have some kind of bias against old-ass art. I mean, get a god damn colorist. Didn't you guys have a Jordie Bellaire back then?

Is it more akin to something like Johnny Quest?
