COMICS! |OT| August 2016. That's Rare Groove. Volume is Crucial.

Animosity was alright, but it's maybe a little too straight-forward.

Like, when BKV does a high concept like this, you read the premise, and that makes you want to try the book, but then the first issue introduces some additional dimension to it that isn't covered in that base premise. It's that extra dimension that gives you a feeling of surprise and discovery, and if that's lacking, then you have a first issue like this, which feels like it's just restating the premise.

Plus, a BKV will always nail you with a great cliffhanger that makes you need that next issue.

My brain probably went to BKV as an example here because the premise of Animosity has a little Y: The Last Man and Pride of Baghdad to it.

I might bounce off of Black Panther. I'm part of the problem. It's the only Marvel book I've even buying. The most recent issue was not very interesting. I should probably stop getting excited when well known authors write comics. The art is still freaking great. :/

Oh man, Detective Comics is so good.

It's pretty dull imo

Pete Carroll Owns Me
I've got some theories on this one. I noticed
that they made it a point not to mention Alpha's death around Lydia. Obvious reasons, sure. But what are the odds of her finding out anyway and rejoining her people? Maybe as Alpha considering the torch that Beta carried for Lydia's mom? Then we have Magna and her people, who we still know nothing about. Could they be Whisperers sent to infiltrate Rick's community?

I don't think it needs to be anything that complicated.

Rick's plan really sucks. I guess nobody told him what happened the last time his people tried to redirect a group of walkers being led by the Whisperers. He really didn't seem to understand that the Whisperers are going to attack from within that massive herd. I think his little army is going to get overrun pretty easily.

Just finished Daredevil S2. Got kinda stupid at the end with
"blacklist" or whatever ended up being Punisher's higher up.

hot hot hanuman-on-man action
mmm morning coffee & comics

Thor - God Bomb is still so good, starting to wind down. Aaron did great work creating Gorr - a sympathetic villain who feels like a legit threat. Ribic's art is as beautiful as ever.

Action Comics #25 (Pak) - L O V E D this issue. Where can I read more Supes like this? Almost reminds me of Connor Kent from Young Justice.

Invincible Iron Man #12 - Another great villain in the wind now, can't wait to see the inevitable Riri vs. Tomoe fight. If this stuff trickles into the MCU in a few years, we will be too lucky. Let's get a Parker/Kamala/Riri Young Avengers movie going.

The casting for the higher up gave away the twist. Guy had a part like this in season one of Flash.

I wasn't playing to but I might get Harley Quinn as it comes out. First issue was a fun read.

This.

Plus the premisse should be that animals got sentience and speech capabilities.

But half of them started to act like humans, not talking animals. It should not change their behaviour. Exemples include the polar bear (why he should be ashames from eating seals?), the chickens and rooster (that they would not suppport that kind of abuse/dominance animore), and so on... Only the tiger acted like a tiger, with a tiger mentality. And, of course, the hound.

Rachel Rising limited edition omnibus is seriously a work of love. Super high quality and pretty remarkable to look at. Paper is firm and I love the black on black design. Best $100 I've spent on an Omni.

Print is cool, but I own pages from the book.

Putting together my DCBS list, alot of good #1's coming up...
Reborn #1, Capullo and Millars new baby...
Now Infamous Iron Man #1, Alex Maleev on art
Big Trouble Little China Escape New York #1 (One of my favorite artist, Kennel Block Blues, Translucid).
Moonshine #1, this sounds like it could be a good book...maybe
Lost Boys #1
Death of X #1
Batman Beyond #1
Seven to Eternity #1 A new Remender book, Jerome Opena, Matt Hollingsworth on art.

I heard about these two books on a podcast recently, they both sound pretty interesting if you like the Noir books.
Hard Case Crime Trigger Man #1
Locked up for a life of murder, Roy Nash never thought he'd walk the mean streets of Chicago again, let alone rescue his beloved, Lena. But when the city's Mafia elite spring the notorious gun-for-hire to handle one last assignment, Roy once again finds himself thrown headfirst into a life of bloodshed and bullets as he sprints a breathless race to save the girl he left behind. From legendary screenwriter and director Walter Hill (The Warriors, Red Heat, Last Man Standing)

Hard Case Crime Peepland #1
Times Square, 1986: the home of New York's red light district where strip clubs, porno theatres and petty crime prevails. When a chance encounter for Peepbooth worker Roxy Bell leads to the brutal murder of a public access pornographer, the erotic performer and her punk rock ex-partner Nick Zero soon find themselves under fire from criminals, cops, and the city elite, as they begin to untangle a complex web of corruption leading right to city hall. Like The Naked City, there are eight million stories in The Deuce. This is one of them.

Don't forget to order Death of X #2.

Crosspost from Rebirth thread: I really wanted to love this Batman issue and did the first time reading but afterward it just seemed too much to excuse or look past.

First Rebirth drops: Aquaman, Green Lanterns, Justice League
On the brink: Action Comics(one more issue? The mystery is too damn interesting even though the issues are boring as hell)

Rankings: Green Arrow>Batman>Suicide Squad>Nightwing>Superman

Batman was pretty amazing while reading but after reading thinking back it was really confusing and convoluted.
Why would Waller have the numbers add up to give away the team? Did they only add up that way because a soldier was missing? How did that missing soldier find Gotham's parents? How did Gotham piece together one of the soldiers was missing? There was just too many questions afterwards. It was a lot of great suspense and awesome pacing but afterward I just had too many issues with it.

Green Arrow continues to be great fun and the cheese dialogue didn't even bother me in this issue. Really loving this book and it surprises me with that fact ever two weeks.

Probably my first SS and I really liked it.

Nightwing was a lot better than the first issue which I really didn't like. I still didn't like Seeley's dialogue and the art was off but this issue was a lot more fun to read than last issue.

Superman was just ok while being a little weird.

People misuse the word dull when there not are lots of fights happening.

Black panther is a political thriller rather than a tradiontal cape book or even adventure
Not only do I know what the word dull means, I also know my own feelings on the book.

It might be a political thriller, but there's nothing thrilling about it.

I wouldn't say it's dull. It's definitely slow paced but the writings good and there's enough going on to keep me interested. Coates has done a good job building up the supporting cast and you get a good sense of the weight on T'Challa's shoulders. Stelfreeze's art has been excellent as well, but it's definitely not a book for everyone. I think PROFF's right about it reading better in trade though. It's similar to Hickman's Avengers in that respect.

I can agree. Not for everyone.

There are two styles of black panthers.

1. The one line, ass kicking, and homo superior black panther featured in ultimates

2. The black panther who gets humbled by everyone

Brace yourselves for some heartbreaking news.

The Powers TV show has been cancelled.

Still waiting for the heartbreaking news. Powers was not a very good or fun show.

I get the feeling that BP is much better when you read the trades and dont have to wait between each issue

This might be the issue. I very much forgot who the characters were in the time between issues. Like, I know BP and his mom. There are those two rogue warriors. Anddddddd no idea what else is going on without a re-read. Am I supposed to be mad at the two Warrior ladies? They seemed like they were doing the Right Thing. Certainly deserves a re-read at some point.

The thing is there not really a bad guy in a sense because they all want a better wakanda. They are more along the lines of morally grey. Not going to lie I had to open up marvel wiki to understand some characters

But an old school character was introduced in the last issue who is just straight evil

Is it
Zeke Stane? If so, is that a little on the nose?

Read Batman Rebirth and Batman #1 last night. Rebirth was meh but I enjoyed #1, I'm interested to see how these "heroes" handle Gotham.

Finally had a couple of free days and finished some stuff off.

Generally, I haven't been too big a fan of most of the DC Rebirth stuff so far. Really only enjoying Superman so far. Everything else is kind of mediocre or really inconsistent. Hoping some of the new titles (Snyder's Batman) are great because my DC vs. Marvel pull list is really lopsided.

I also managed to finish off Animal Man by Grant Morrison. The first issue was kind of slow but I was hooked from the second one and couldn't put it down. This was just a really great read and it had so many wonderful stand alone issues. The Coyote issue is probably my personal favorite and I've re-read it a bunch of times now.

Great art too for a comic that came out in the late 80s, along with some absolutely fantastic covers.

Yes it is, and I am not to familiar with the character so I gotta wiki. Based off of solicits I am worried about this arc because of All the
teamups

As far as
potential team up go, that is a huge bummer, but par for the course for a Marvel book. Also, Coates apparently loves Marvel. If I were on a book, I'd damn sure through in my favorite heroes that I wanted to write if at all possible.

Didn't enjoy Detective Comics or Green Arrow? Those have been the best and most consistent in my book.

Amen

Mr. Deodato makes Riri look like she's in her 30s.
When they announced she was 15, I was completely dumbfounded.
There was a gif of the actress he probably based his art of her on in the last thread. Can't remember her name but she's around 30-40 IIRC. Edit: Might've been Teyonah Parris?

He has said he based her on a 14 year old actress but that's pretty clearly not his main inspiration.

Sherrif of Babylon is so ridiculously good.

I read that Tom King Ringer interview and if HBO picks up the show it will be their next GoT, guaranteed.

I
She's being written as Commander Shepard.

Which kind of makes sense since FemShep and Carol share a VA.

comic book character figures

I wouldn't know anything about that....

One of you figure people's got to help me order Bishoujo Jane Thor as well.

I'm enjoying Detective Comics but it's been a bit inconsistent for me, mainly the pacing.

Green Arrow, is a bit too on the nose for me with it's writing. The first arc seems decent but nothing that's really hooked me. Seems like a fairly well executed, albeit typical super-hero comic arc.

I'm with you on the writing. It was my biggest issue with his run pre Rebirth and the last issue I thought it had too much cheese and dumb dialogue but it really hasn't gotten in the way (yet) for me this run and I've really enjoyed it. Seeing that stuff and being annoyed with it in the past I can definitely understand it being an issue.
