Animosity was alright, but it's maybe a little too straight-forward.
Like, when BKV does a high concept like this, you read the premise, and that makes you want to try the book, but then the first issue introduces some additional dimension to it that isn't covered in that base premise. It's that extra dimension that gives you a feeling of surprise and discovery, and if that's lacking, then you have a first issue like this, which feels like it's just restating the premise.
Plus, a BKV will always nail you with a great cliffhanger that makes you need that next issue.
My brain probably went to BKV as an example here because the premise of Animosity has a little Y: The Last Man and Pride of Baghdad to it.
