How does Marvel's editorial staff approve injecting a brand new character into one of your most popular franchise's origin stories when the ideas for said character are so incredibly bland? I really enjoyed Superior Spider-Man, but this is the content gets the OK to reboot the title? Yeesh...

Is Silk really this awfull?

Slott has to go :(

More Comixology sales coming at you! Top Shelf has a TON of trades up to 50% off.

At first glance, I'd highly recommend Wizzywig, an amazing indie comic about a phreak/hacker who finds himself in jail for his exploits as a young man.

There's so much amazing stuff on sale from them (Harvey Pekar's Cleveland, Heck, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, etc) that I urge you all to take a good look.

She's not awful she just...is. She is awful in her mediocrity. I dare you to not get bored of her in a single issue...and to not "UGH" at that last page

As long as we have Spidey 2099 Marvel can just go ahead and send ASM down the shitter, as they seem intent on doing. Maybe I'll get back into USM. I wish they'd give Superior Venom his own series again :(

I read Thor: God of Thunder #13 tonight.

Why do I remember hearing that this series went downhill after Godbomb? I thought this was a fantastic issue. I haven't thought Malekith was a cool villain in about twenty years, but his return was badfuckingass. It even comes with a lovely map of the Nine Realms! I could frame that map and hang it. Do people just not like the Warriors Three? I don't want to live in a world where people don't like the Warriors Three.

My one problem with the book is holy shit Garney couldn't draw Sif to save his life

What is going on here? Did she put her hair up in a bun for her pegasus ride? What the hell is going on with her cape? Did her leg grow a mane? Is she kicking the horse she's flying in the wing?

j7OVazj.jpg

Who the hell is that?? And why does she have bacon on her forehead?

Every time Sif is off-panel she puts on a new helmet:

This is my favorite. Is her cape being worn by a chipmunk riding on her back?

Damn guys. Hit the hay last night right after the image comics announcements, but some scorchers in there alright. Descender has to be the one I'm most amped for. Sweet Tooth is really one of the best series I've read, some absolutely heartbreaking moments in that series. Lemire is one of the few writers that I consistently dislike his superhero work but utterly worship his original work. Not sure why but I tried Frankenstein, Animal Man, KLD, I even tried Green Arrow after that trade eventually came out, but I can just never get into his superhero stuff, he doesn't have the same grasp on character that he has in his own work. Sweet Tooth though, The Underwater Welder, The Nobody, are all fucking out of this world. Can't wait for Descender ( or Trillium reading trad ein a few weeks actually haha).

The others that caught my eye were the Ellis/Shalvey book, Gabriel Hardman and Corina Bechko's book, Ray Fawkes thing has a pretty crazy style. I like the sound of From Under Mountains but does sound like another book coming out off the GoT wave of popularity. Great expo for Image though, I figured this one would be quieter given all the announcements last time but they really nailed it.

OH F#ck, and how could I forget, Arcudi and Harren coming to Image to do a book? What a coup man, what world do they do that book at Image and not Dark Horse man, that one was a jaw dropper.

Hey guys!

I made my first foray into comic books and purchasing said comic books on Saturday! I'm a huge Batman fan so that definitely dictated my choices a bit. This is what I left the comic shop with:

I'm most likely going to go to the comic shop tomorrow to pick up Batman and Robin #33, any other suggestions? I'm just worried about picking up mid-arc and playing catch up but I am open to anything!

Thanks! :)

Okay, here's what I bought from that Batman sale:
Batman #436-439 - Year 3
Legends of the Dark Knight #49-50 - Doctor Quinn's Diagnosis (this one's for you, Messi!)
Gotham by Gaslight
Detective Comics #777-782 - I didn't know Brubaker wrote Batman!
The Dark Knight Returns #1-4 - will give it another shot, this time in English
I had no money left for Gothic, Prey and Venom :(

I know I'm a week late, but I wanted to write about a thing that was bugging me: Wonder Girl in Teen Titans #1 by Will Pfeifer and Kenneth Rocafort.

The issue itself is fun: fast-paced, the little story begins and ends here but is also a start of a bigger arc, the dialogue is fun, the idea is cool. The linework and colors are very nice, but everything is also very static which sucks when you realize that it's a comic about a bus speeding through New York. Also, the gay part at the end was forced and made no sense. Overall it was a cool issue.

But why does Wonder Girl look like a pornstar?
I know nothing about the character so maybe she had plastic surgery like Emma Frost, but I doubt it. I understand that someone wanted her to look hot, and sure, she does look hot (I'm twenty so I can say that a 17-year-old girl is hot :p), but also totally not like a teenager/young adult.
It sucks because there recently was another teenage hero comic with a super hot female character who looked like an actual person. Yup, Miss America:
Whoa! Not only very attractive, but also realistic.

Everything about the way Wonder Girl looks is wrong. The costume is just silly, seriously. Teenage girls are rarely into flashing their tits like that. Her hair is tied-up when she's in civilian clothes but loose when she's out superheroing? That's a minor detail I could toally lie with, but coupled with everything else it just doesn't work.

And what's worse is that in her everyday clothes she actually looked very good and believable.

So yeah, that's that. It kind of came back to me when I saw that Batgirl statue and she has ridiculous breasts. Each one of the statues does which I think is silly.

Oh and btw, what's a "bishoujo statue? :p

Hello ComicGAF! I have decided recently to try and get back into comics after about 10 years by buying a ton of TPBs and was wanting to know what comic sites/podcasts you guys/gals recommend. Also, how awesome is this Matt Fraction Hawkeye?

SO awesome. The pacing gets kind of slow near the end of volume 2, but it's still really good.

I also recommend Superior Foes of Spider-Man. Despite having Spider-Man in the title, it has nothing to do with him and you don't need any prior knowledge to enjoy the book. It's a comedy book and it's excellent.

Does anyone know a good place to get the Bishoujo statues in the UK/Europe? I'm really into that Jubilee statue but we usually get pretty screwed from most of the sites I've seen.

Hey guys, any TPB recommendation for a guy who don't follow comics (except Fables)? I'm eyeing Matt Fraction's Hawkeye or GotG Cosmic Avengers vol. 1. What I'm looking for is basically a stand-alone story that doesn't rely much on the continuity

Hawkeye will do the job admirably. I recommend getting the hardcover, which has the first two TPBs.

Try Saga, most seem to love it.

Hawkeye's awesome, so is Saga. Have you literally read nothing other than Fables? Depending on how many books you're willing to buy I have a bunch of suggestions. You could try some of Alan Moore's stuff - Watchmen is very highly regarded, also V for Vendetta or The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Superman Red Son is a great story that takes place in an alternate universe, so you don't need to know any continuity for it, similarly All-Star Superman is also a really great little run you don't need to know anything for. Apart from LOEG all those are collected in single TPBs I think. You could try Gotham Central (set in the Gotham City Police Department), it's really good. That has 4 volumes. I also enjoyed Y: The Last Man, Sandman and Locke & Key, which all have quite a few volumes to them, but are very good.

Not sure if these are the sort of suggestions you're after though!

Six-Gun Gorilla. No continuity whatsoever, just a beautiful, fun story about a former librarian and his pardner travelling a sci-fi world. Said pardner is the titular gun slingin Gorilla.

The art is wonderful, the story has matters, the paperback has nice, thick paper. Get on it! ;)

Ah, forgot to say I've read Saga up to vol. 2, thanks for the suggestions. It is indeed very good.

Books I've read are Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Sandman, Dark Knight Returns, Scott Pilgrim. I used to read Ultimate Spider-man too before it gets complicated. Most of them are standalone books and I only closely follow Fables TPB.

I googled Bloodspell and it's the one with Black Canary and Zatanna? I know these two characters but never read anything with them so it might be interesting.

I don't know if this is right or not, but I found DC's standalone stories easier to enjoy than Marvel's. I wanted to follow Miles Morales' Spidey, but not sure in buying his first volume--Bendis' origin story can be very slow.

Some good stuff there. But please save yourself the hassle and just drop Catwoman. Get some of her older Brubaker run and be better for it. Also pick up the new Harley Quinn series as it is great.

Blurry early show floor pics are the best.

Ordering that case as soon as it goes up for sale. They're showing a new Spider-Man wave tomorrow and already showed off a boxset with Ms. Marvel (Carol) Radioactive Man and Cap.

Blood spell is awesome, it's a little short but it is so so good.

Try Daredevil by Mark Waid too

Read Sex Criminals. Its really really good.

Reaidng through CBR's interview with Mike Mignola on the new HB & the BPRD book and spotted this:

I didn't spot them specifically reference it in the text, but looks like a cover for a new BPRD omnibus, collecting the 1940s series. Great stories, for anyone who is reading the series by omnibus.

Reading through Umbral last night and today, will probably share some thoughts on volume 1 later, if anyone's interested in that!

Nice. Thought that's what they'd do. Made the most sense.

No. Please keep those thoughts to yourself.

Nextwave. Entirely self-contained and complete,
read: cancelled
aside from one cross-over cover. But really, that cover was the best part of that entire event.
