Kipp

but I am taking tiny steps forward
All that Spider-Man talk reminded me that it seems Toa TAK doesn't really post in here anymore. He was the SUPERIOR Spider-Man poster in this thread. Wonder what he's making of ASM. Haha

Saga #20 was pretty fantastic. I loved how
organic these blooming romantic trysts
are. Also,
Janitor assassin was badass.

Those old comics are the worst, amiright?

I know you're fucking with me but yes :p anything pre-1980 is automatically suspect and it should be an uncontroversial opinion that US comics only got good around the British Invasion in the mid 80s. IMO old comics are interesting from a point of view of context and history, but much like cinema pre 1970s it's only rare works that actually hold up, the chasm of taste is too much for me to jump for the most part.

I was gonna buy it on holidays. But fuck carrying that lol.

Lol TSA may stop you with that one.

Also, in Invincible news...come on. This story has been a heartbreaking shit show since the beginning of the arc. I don't know if I can take it much longer.

Just read Sinestro 3 and it was pretty good. The art is just amazing. I have come to learn that I like the "villain" lanterns the most. Fear and Rage.

Putting your weird aversion to old comics aside, dude was asking about Dark Phoenix, an all time classic. It's not like he was going to read some random issue of Legion where Triplicate Girl throws herself a surprise party because everyone forgot her birthday (sorry GH!). Dark Phoenix is an all time classic that to this day still informs the X-Men line of books. I get people don't like old stuff like I do, but surely this fits your definition of a rare work that stands the test of time.

I'm just here to say Saga really was fantastic this month, Superman was good and I have faith in Johns and JRJR. Only thing else I've read so far is Future's End, and it's just DRAGGGGGINNNNGGGG. They seem to have the pacing in Batman Eternal working pretty damn well for a weekly book. The Future's End team could learn from them. So far, I feel like Future's End has maybe 6 - 10 issues worth of story that is being stretched to 52.

Is that Transformers More than Meets the Eye/Robots in Disguise bundle on comixology worth it? I'm about to go on vacation at the beach and am looking for something fun to read. Also is it newbie friendly? I don't know much about the Transformers universe beyond the big players. Thanks for the help!

In fairness, those old Legion covers GH posts are one of the highlights of the thread. It does sting that literally no story could live up to them.

Dark Phoenix is amazing though. Three comics masters at the height of their powers. So very good.

If you get The Death of Optimus Prime one-shot (it's not what you think) as well, you will be set. It is a fresh start and no prior knowledge is required. Go for it, it's tremendous.

Azrael 1,000,000 may be the worst DC Comic of all-time

I'm halfway through the omnibus, and so far, the Legion 1,000,000 issues have made me pass the fuck out.

This event is has the oddest juxtaposition of awful antiquated 90s books and some stuff that holds up really well, like the Starman and Teen Titans stories.

I don't really think that 'important' always equals 'good' though - or more specifically, 'good' as seen through the lens of modern audiences. Take Kirby for instance - incredible imagination and design sense, not really the greatest writer in the world though and the stories are interesting for reasons other than plot/character/drama. Same if you look at the Death of Gwen Stacey - incredibly important story and was great for the 70s but it doesn't hold up next to the best comic book made in 2014 at all.

Personally I have reverence and respect for the building blocks of the artform, but I don't find them vital and exciting pieces of entertainment in and of themselves.

In many ways this is a big part of how Marvel differs from DC. Marvel have these events from their deep past (older than me!) that are still in continuity and continually referred to without being rehashed or retold very often, whereas DC is quite fond of retelling an origin or a big event with new spins. I don't think either approach is perfect tbh.

That said, I've never read the DPS outside of the iconic panels and recaps that I've come across in my life, so I could be entirely wrong and it could be Alan Moore-level defying-conventional-wisdom shit.

I was just looking at these on Amazon this morning and they're on sale. Bit of a coincidence.

Might pick up the first few More than Meets the Eye trades despite the fact I don't usually buy digital.

Well hell Jedeye, read DPS then! :D
And I do get what you're saying, I just differ in that I genuinely enjoy going back and reading a lot of that old stuff. Sure it's not as polished as what's out there today, but it was a different era and I can respect that and not let it deter from my reading experience. Plus a lot of Silver Age stuff is just completely ridiculous and I get a kick out of that.

Oh I just couldn't resist a little jab at GH, I like most of the older Legion stuff I've read.

I am a self acknowledged weirdo though, I have a hard time with music pre 1990 as well. I'm a neophile. Newest latest best YES!

I kinda want to read DPS but I don't want to pay money, so it'll sit on the backburner :p

The beauty of older covers is that they were almost always both absolutely true to the story while also being COMPLETE FUCKING LIES. So you knew what you were getting into without actually having anything spoiled. In many ways they did a better job then than modern comics do, in advertising the story. Today's comics are just pretty prints that you get on the cheap.

Older comics also had a really fascinating way they told stories; Legion, for example, has a ton of two parters in the vein of what the Justice League animated series did for the first half, where everything was a two parter. But they also moved at a brisk pace and didn't shy away from having fights last a few panels at most. It was all about the build up to the climax and then it wrapped up quick and neat.

Also, I know exactly what I am getting into with my particular fandom and obsession, so I ain't nevah gonna sweat nothin'.

I think we all are or we wouldn't be posting here... hah.

I see five public libraries in the UK that own DPS, you have no excuses for not reading it. :p

I feel like anybody into Brandon Graham is totally weird, but in fun ass ways.

Although, you like Graham AND dirty elf porno comics, so...

gasp you besmirch my good name, ser! The only porn comics I read would be Guiseppe Manunta, some select futa and then Bayonetta doujins. Oh and Jab.

Oh god I said too much

I agree. David Baldeon drew a few pages apparently and i didn't even notice! I hated his work on the last issues of Scarlet Spider. Either he got a bad colorist last time or a really good one this time (could be the latter, they should keep Redmond bc she's good)

I didn't notice any changes either lol

I think we're the only ones reading it... I still have my digital codes for every issue so far so I might just give them away this weekend to get more people into it.

So last months Batman really set the bar high, it was exciting, heart-racing and just overall a work of art. Which is probably why I can't help but feel Batman #32 was more or less a let down. Sure, it was pretty to look at, but it didn't quite keep the pace for me this time :(

I agree. I reread with of course lower expectations and it was still a great read. They just put on the breaks this issue.
