I don't think Invincible has really relied on shock-value. There have been some extremely gory scenes
especially that amazing splash page of Mark headbutting Conquest over and over and over until the latter's skull was mush
. Any ongoing, non-finite story that makes it over 100 issues is obviously going to go through changes now and then. Books that have a planned conclusion right from the get-go tell the story they need to tell, then end. But books that don't and can possibly go on forever do go through highs and lows.
It does sometimes. The worst was that issue with
substitute invincible family
. That issue happened and then nothing was ever mentioned again.

If you are looking for an 80's as hell, Commando/Universal Soldier type story with really solid writing and an awesome sequence, that book will scratch a very specific itch.

Sounds good, I'll throw it in the Midtown list for the next shipment.

I'm having trouble remembering exactly what issues those were. But it sounds like that may be for the best. The book definitely had some low points, but I think on the whole, it's been entertaining the vast majority of the time, which is impressive for a book that's closing in on 120 issues.

I also enjoy seeing the various designs of alien waifus.

I've read and enjoyed both from the start. Invincible sometimes goes to the shock value for the sake of it too much sometimes but it's a very consistent good read. But since i read a month behind I stay away from any recent issue discussions. Although the last walking dead issue I read totally faked me out. I thought we'd see some new twist to the zombies. Now I kind of want it....

To be fair, the new flavor of the arc villains are super fresh. I'm so glad it isn't Governor 3.0.

I'm really surprised Invincible doesn't have a bigger fanbase around here. It's pretty much the best teen superhero comic around, and I like how Kirkman let Mark age naturally, so he's not a teen superhero anymore.

Invincible was one of my favourite books before I took a break from comics. I stopped where the first Compendium ended and I've always wanted to go back. I might do that soon. Would probably have to start from the beginning though.

Invincible #97
it was the issue when Zandale Randolph was filling in as invincible. Him and his girlfriend were having his parents come over for dinner. They kept giving him some verbal jabs about not being as good as his brother and whatnot and then an argument happens and out of the blue his gf comes and hits the mom in the head with a frying pan killing her and then they proceed to murder his dad. Aaand the issue ends and nothing about this thread is mentioned ever again

I want to know what their motivation is. It doesn't seem like it's just survival.

oh! Okay, yeah. I didn't really see the point of that. I think they would have been better off just doing a little time-skip at that point.

I mean whenever I try to bring up Walking Dead or Invincible someone makes some noise about it being shit.

I'm slowly making my way through them because while they do indeed feature the worst dialogue in comics, they are both astonishingly well drawn and fairly well constructed as far as driving action goes.

They're very hard to shake for those reasons.

I've been reading a lot of Carl Bark's Donald Duck. Good fun, but won't be entering my favourites list. Don Rosa's Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck on the other hand, is quite brilliant. Great writing and art. The detail in every panel is insane. Actions that happen in a panel are telegraphed in the corner or background a few panels in advance.

I mean, I could have just as easily pitched a fit about people ignoring my enthusiasm for Deathlok, but I unfortunately realize that half the books I do enjoy nobody gives a shit about within this thread, and unless I know every inkers name and what their favorite food is, I'm in the minority within the other. So I just try to have fun with it.

lol this is like when Sunset Overdrive shouted out GAF!

only it's ComicGAF shouting out me!

maybe it was foreshadowing him being evil or that was what Robot used to convince him to betray the other heroes?

One thing I hate about America is that it's so hard to get your hands on The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck. I've heard great things about it, and one of my closest online friends is a huge fan of the Disney Duck comics.

Yeah, I find myself sticking with Invincible for the incredibly good art and the mostly entertaining plotting. Kirkman does indeed write some of the goofiest, worst dialogue I've ever read.

I did give up on The Walking Dead though.

I will admit that The Walking Dead is much more coherent collected, vs. reading monthly. I couldn't begin to tell you how many times I pick up the current month's issue and I have to sit there and ask myself who the hell certain people are.

I almost need to make the OT so monthly folks can figure out what's going on.

Have they yet released the third The Walking Dead compendium?
I am thinking about re-reading it and dont want to go back to Trades.

It is a shame, I would pick up a reprint in a heartbeat. I was fortunate to find it at my library.

It has got me excited for this box set releasing soon.

Well, I believe that there are 10 Harcover collections out in the wild so far, and only two omnibus collections.
I made a mistake, I was thinking about the Compendiums - Didnt remembered that those collect almost 50 issues and since the didnt made it yet over Issue 150 (I assume...) its clear that they didnt released it yet^^

Thanks anyway :D

I don't even care about that. What you stated in your post made it seem like your DC boner wasn't getting stroked enough. Marvel has the bigger fanbase, so of course there were going to be a ton of threads in OT about specific things. There was even a thread solely for Hawkeye discussion. XD

I don't think that's it at all, and yes I know Korrupt has already replied to this. Look Zombine even mentioned earlier how he was surprised Batman was in the top 3 cause no one talked about it. People did try to but this thread moves so fast at times, it's almost impossible. Plus yes, with Marvel currently having the larger fanbase, it makes even harder to get some decent discussion about a DC book. It is what it is, but a community thread dedicated to discussing just that seems like a good idea to me. Specially with how few of us are discussing it and how easily it gets lost. I mean shit it's the 2nd of November and this thread is already 7 pages long.

sillymonkey321 still reads Invincible, I think. He never knows when to quit.

heyyyyyyy Invincible and Wakling Dead are the first comics i read in my dcbs shipment. Walking Dead is the only one of the two that has slowed down in spots but i have to wait it out until King Carl inherits the Earth.

All that aside, anyone know if there's a Hellblazer Omnibus coming any time soon, or should I just pick up the individual volumes. I haven't read any of the Vertigo run in like a couple damn decades and I think I'd like to re-experience some of the character's roots.

Sandman was 75 which is what my theory is based on. There are some exceptions

I think some of the specials and epilogues make it 75+ :p

And I think 75 issues is long enough to say everything you have to say as a creator. It blows my mind that some manga series are as long as they are.

Looks like my local library does in fact stock it.

The bad news is that someone else already has it checked out.

Eh, maybe I'll seek it out again when Thanksgiving break comes up.

Most libraries have a hold system. So look on their website (you might have to create an account) or drop in sometime and put a hold on it. They will email you once it is available. I usually have 10+ items on my hold list, I just pick up stuff when they email me.

Individual volumes, they've been rereleasing them about once a month or so. They couldn't even do just omnibus for it, the book ran for 300 issues.

As an aside, it was nice to not check the thread all afternoon and only have about 100 posts to skim/catch up on and not 300.

Earlier this morning I was reading a bit of Kieron Gillen's Journey into Mystery and had the sudden urge to listen to some film scores as I was making my way through. I've seen some of you post before about how it amplified your experience, and I thought "What the hell, worth a try". I didn't really have a particular soundtrack in mind, so I found an actual film score channel on Pandora and basically let it rip.

Now, JiM is a really meaty book, and the primary reason it's taking me so long to get through these collections, but hot damn if I didn't fly through a couple of those chapters. So there's this part where
Loki, Leah and co are escaping "Dark Asgard", and it shows them fighting some of these minions and making they're way through this portal
and I swear to Odin, the most perfect track from Star Wars popped up.

It was literally one of those moments where I was like "HELL YEAH", and fist bumped the air.

I set down JiM and finished the first trade of Red Sonja. Similar thing happened, there's the issue where
Sonja's been exiled and she's making her way through the forest, collapses, and starts hallucinating about her past and a white stag.
This piece from "The Cider House Rules" came on, and I was so moved by how fitting it was. I've never seen that movie, nor many of the other ones that popped up throughout my listening/reading session, but I loved how these unfamiliar tunes ended up being some of the most impressive ones.

Overall, it was such an eye opening experience, and I'm basically hungry for more. I've lounged on the couch long enough, so it's time to shower, but I'm going to research if other fans have made actual soundtracks to certain story arcs or issues.

See! I told you all. Some scoffed but when you find the right score with the right book it's amazing. Man of steel with Supes books, batman TAS for dini work, etc

One I want to try is syncing up Tori Amos's tatoo book with her music based on the various stories

I can't believe I bought all 300 during a comixology sale a year ago or so. $300. But still the cheapest way to own all issues. But still...

Is it really larger though? Harley Quinn is a DC book.

I think this community is so small but so vocal, I don't think it's a question of "more" Marvel fans, it's just about how often they/we talk.

I've written posts about Image books or Marvel books, shit, I even posted about Zero Year at 3:21 AM when the last issue came out and I woke up to read it as early as possible.

But my posts get traction because people love me. I overwhelm doubters with boundless enthusiasm. And I talk about stuff that even if people might not have read the book could at least talk about.

If people aren't talking about DC, it means DC needs more excited fans talking about more accessible things in this thread. If you come in and are like "Boy, guys, it's [Arcane Object Of Continuity]! I can't believe it!" that means that few people are going to hop in. Who the fuck is [Arcane Object]? Who cares if they're not reading it?

But you can post a rad panel from She-Hulk and EVERY motherfucker is going talk about it whether they read it or not.

I think this is a key distinction here. Marvel and Image just plain put out more books with a point of view that you can react to and discuss. Now, DC is getting better at this, but they haven't found away to take that core of their line and combine it with the point of view benefits that drive something like Batgirl or Harley Quinn. Look at Green Lantern's line. It's fine, it's perfunctory, it's telling stories that people like. But you can't post a page from it and get people talking. They need (and are currently actively searching for) more Batmans. Not more New Suicide Squads.

Flip that over and look at New Avengers. Not only is it a core of Marvel's line, but it's resting 1000% on the shoulders of one person's thrilling POV. That gives people stuff to talk about and react to. It's not just filling A with B so the line can get to C.

So I disagree. I firmly believe that we are split totally evenly as far preference goes. But DC just isn't as talked about because, frankly, their line doesn't lend itself to message board discussions.

What is there to discuss except where the plot is going to go next? There's no discussions of taste, you either like the House Style or you don't. Contrast that to Marvel, and you can talk at length about whether or not Pulido sucks whether or not Wimberly sucks whether or not Bachalo sucks whether or not Kubert sucks whether or not Cassaday sucks whether or not Noto sucks whether or not Samnee sucks whether or not Ramos sucks whether or not Alphona sucks and on and on and on.

If you're not on board with the Nu52, there's not a lot to talk about. Look at every time I bring up Valiant. Two responses? A month?

But I GUARANTEE you not everyone talking about Marvel books reads them every month. There's just stuff for them to talk about.

With DC there's only thing to say: "Yeah, I don't know, I don't really follow that."

DC needs to start making conversations happen. They're getting there with Batgirl and the jaw dropping teams on Eternal. But obviously they're not there yet.

On the 75 issue thing, it really just depends on the writer/artist style. Bendis's decompression could take 6 issues to do Spider-Man's origin, while Lee/Ditko did in less than 12 pages, ya know? It takes awhile for him to hit all the Spidey beats, the girlfriends and the villains, the jobs and symboites, hit the clone saga around #100, joined a team around #110, I think? Every one of his stories were like, 5-6 issues, he just go around to Hobgoblin by #75. Meanwhile, last time I counted Morrison's Batman has 74 issues, and look how many stories and ideas he crammed into that shit.

Then you take into account manga that run in thousands of pages, or comic strips people worked on for years, shit can build on you real quick. Everybody has their own pacing for their stories. Some people should have left years ago, while others hey, they still doing exciting, interesting work, I'm up for it.

That's the same one, yeah. It's not Life and Times if that's what you're asking, though.

Ooh, hadn't realised it already came out. Will include it in my next order.

But yeah, it is not Life and Times. Fantagraphics are planning to release 10 volumes of Don Rosa's work. These are 1 and 2.

Ah, I didn't realize that they were different. I've never read anything from that set before, though I do recall some of the guys from the Comics Conspiracy podcast praising the heck out of something by Dan Rosa, so it was probably that.

Don't let that cover fool you, that entire issue, especially the ending was epic.

In fairness, that's mostly because it's a Sunday. Sundays have always been slow around here.
With that said, there's been some solid comics discussion today.

Meanwhile, last time I counted Morrison's Batman has 74 issues, and look how many stories and ideas he crammed into that shit.

Huh. I never really thought about how many issues it was total. I wouldn't have guessed it was that many though.

anyone have a opinion on COWL or Burn the Orphanage?

Nobody likes COWL. No idea on Burn the Orphanage though.

Batman #35: i didn't like it. Doesn't help that by the time i read it the ending wasn't that much of a surprise because I knew who was entering the Batman series again, but it boiled down to a "why are you doing this?" fight book with poor dialogue. Random 5/10 for blandness.
