Just because, here is some Nick Pitarra Fantastic Four art that I believe is from a rejected pitch:

Also, I hear if you say "Monster" three times in the mirror at night, Mumei shows up and gushes about it, so just a heads-up

It's true.

I'm still irritated by the translation error in the first volume of the Perfect (my ass) Edition, though. :(

Ah, I didn't realize that they were different. I've never read anything from that set before, though I do recall some of the guys from the Comics Conspiracy podcast praising the heck out of something by Dan Rosa, so it was probably that.

Don Rosa has apparently written a ton of Duck stuff, but Life and Times is considered his magnum opus.

I mean whenever I try to bring up Walking Dead or Invincible someone makes some noise about it being shit.

Last year, I purchased Invincible 1-100 during the Comixology sale. That's right, I spent $100 on Invincible. I've only read three, maybe four issues so far.

I don't care what anyone says about it, I'm going to read the entire run, dammit. I hope I love it.

I did the exact same thing with Invincible and Walking Dead.

No shame.

Birdie! I posted a valiant comic statement but since like only you and me read it, it went no where. Let's talk the state of the product line. I think they're in a slump

Let me drudge up my post

I think I'm going to start culling the valiant list. The product line was so great for so long but it feels like its in a slump. That last event felt unnecessary and should have just been an xo man of war story. So I think ill pair it down to just Archer & Armstrong and Harbinger. And I'll avoid their event books for a while. Maybe catch up on xo through a digital sale but it and unity have gotten so stale.

I have like the first year and then some of Valiant thanks to the Humble Bundle and I've barely touched it. :(
Read archer Armstrong. It's one of the most consistent funny action books out there. It's the spiritual sequel to incredible Hercules by marvel years ago. Highly recommended.

Once the artist changes the book improves tenfold. It's one of my favorite superhero stories I've invested myself in.

They are definitely in a slump. I don't like the moves to minis either. Eternal Warrior ended outta nowhere. Quantum and Woody did nt need to end.

Wow, this thread got a bit redunk for a day or so, huh? I'm glad to see the Invincible conversation though, that used to be one of my absolute favorite series. I have to get caught up on it. Haven't read it since a little bit after the Viltrulimite War (I know I spelled that wrong). Walking Dead is a book that I have NEVER bought monthly, but I used to eagerly await the trades. Have to get caught up with that as well. Both books def went through some slumps (Invincible especially felt a little lost after the Viltrulimite War.)

Probably gonna use that Barnes and Nobles sale to get into Snyder's Batman. Either that or Morrison's, but I feel Snyder's may be more easily accessible for someone who doesn't have a wealth of Batman/DC knowledge.

I know I already made a big post about Infinity but I still wanna talk about it, damn it! People who loved Annihilation should absolutely be reading Hickman's Avengers/New Avengers. Infinity felt like Annihilation 3 (and in my opinion, Annihilation perfected). The first Annihilation def had some problems, and I in general liked Annihilation: Conquest more, but they both had some problems where things just didn't feel right in parts. Conquest I distinctly remember not really enjoying that Wraith character. The original Annihilation FELT like it was epic, but also a bit empty. Maybe because it didn't really have any great series to tie in with it, just some kind of average ones. Infinity on the other hand...I said my only real problem with it in a previous post, was that it didn't feel like it had a concrete ending, it was just leading into something even more insane. This was mostly because of the New Avengers Epilogue however. Either way, it made it VERY obvious to me where Hickman needs to be placed after his Avengers runs are done. Cosmic Marvel. Hell, he even continued some of Abnett and Lanning's cosmic storylines in his FF run.

Also in response to Cheska earlier, I find listening to soundtracks while reading runs of comics greatly enhances them. Hell, back to Hickman, when I was reading the issues towards the end of FF, essentially the climax of his run, I was listening to Explosions in the Sky. The music fit wonderfully, and I'm positive made it all the more emotional and even caused a tear or two in my eyes. Back when I read Walking Dead I'd always read the trades while listening to Red Sparrows or other similar artists to set the mood. I used the soundtrack to Fury while reading through Infinity. They usually match up pretty wonderfully.

I will perform whatever blood sacrifices are required to get the hacks out of the current Marvel Cosmic staple of books and get Hickman in there. Hell, I'd take Bendis-lead Avengers again if it meant Hickman got Guardians of the Galaxy away from him.

Yep bendis clearly doesn't give a shit about guardians.

At least we have rocket raccoon and guardians 3000

I have to admit, I got REALLY excited when I saw Star-Lord and Rocket in the Cast page of one of the last Infinity issues, and REALLY dismayed when they made a silent one panel cameo that was basically an ad for some sure to be shit tie-in. That may be the one thing keeping Infinity from truly being Annihilation:Tres. The lack of Peter Quill and Richard Rider. Otherwise it had everything else that makes for an Annihilation event. Giant multi-galaxy spanning super army taking over forcing all the great space races to join up and defeat it, but this time with the FREAKING AVENGERS!

But yeah, I think Hickman would be a pretty good fit for Guardians and other cosmic Marvel adventures. He can get the goofiness and light heartedness of Guardians just fine mixed in with the supremely epic scale of Cosmic Marvel. And with how big the movie was, it isn't even like it's some kinda C-tier shit for him to be working on anymore.

Reading comics to soundtracks has been my thing these days. Trent Reznors score for Social Network, Girl with a Dragon Tattoo, Gone Girl, and NINs Ghost album have been the perfect thing for the books I read.

They should give it to Fred Van Lente

That would also work pretty well I think, but possibly keep it too similar to Abbet and Lanning's version. I think Hickman would stay true to the characters while making it something different then it was before, which is good and how it should be. Unlike Bendis just doing whatever he wants with them. Ugh, I couldn't make it past 3 issues of his run. And I used to very much like Bendis's New Avengers etc. He was writing Avengers when I got into comics and I didn't dislike it. Loved Dark Avengers etc. But man I hate how he writes Guardians. But I'm sure that's been discussed enough here.

Are there any good self-contained Star Wars runs? Something that has completely different characters from the original films or the prequels?

I remember really liking Knights of the Old Republic and Legacy. Didn't stick with either to the end, but I thought they were both fun Star Wars reads that stand completely on their own.

A tad late to the discussion, but I just wanted to say that Invincible is the title I've gone into hardcore trade waiting mode. I'm trying to make it to the (hopefully) eventual third Compendium release.

I recently picked up The Finder Library, Volumes 1 and 2, on charlequin's recommendation. I've flipped through them, and I love the art. I'm not really a big fan of the lettering; it's a bit small, but it's not a serious problem. Now to put them on the shelf and forget about them until I have a sudden inexplicable urge to read them!

This is true. Once Ryan Ottley comes in, the art in Invincible becomes great and then ridiculously glorious once the years go on and he starts improving his drawing skills.

I own the first 10 trades of the Walking Dead. I'm not sure I can follow that journey any further. Invincible looks right up my alley, though.

I get so nauseated by its incessant grimness and the tower of grotesque circumstance Kirkman heaps onto his protagonists, all for no reason except to just make things worse.

Then Charlie Adlard draws a two page spread of a blasted out parking lot and I can't not read this book.

And here I thought that a Zombie Apocalypse would be a pleasant experience. Who knew it would be so morbid? Lol

I remember Rick saying something like " we are the walking dead" early in the series and i think it is an apt description for the book itself, it shambles around from arc to arc now and i still enjoy it, but it feels like it's over and yet still moves.

Everyone I know that reads TWD either stopped at this point and decided it was the closest thing to an ending they needed, or kept reading and have developed a masochistic hate affair with the book. I really need to try reading it for myself, but the vitriol most of my friends have for it has really turned me off.

It's a terrible, gorgeous book. Your appreciation of the latter obviously impacts your tolerance of the former.

Look forward to my rant about Bendis' Guardians of the Galaxy after I get home. It's a doozy. I've been saving it for a while.

See! I told you all. Some scoffed but when you find the right score with the right book it's amazing. Man of steel with Supes books, batman TAS for dini work, etc

This was a fantastic suggestion! Especiall because the Batman TAS soundtrack has so much to choose from. I just paired this up with the Mad Love and Other Stories paperback and it was perfect. I even played the Jingle Bells/Pukey Christmas songs while reading the Batgirl issue! Haha 10/10

Oooh! Have been meaning to read my Inifnity omnibus, this feels like the perfect opportunity to do so.

Whoot, awesome recommendations! Will check them out.

I tried doing a search for some actual playlists, but not having much luck :( I saw in another thread from last year that someone mentioned the Kick-Ass sundtrack for Ultimate Spider-Man.

The night is young, you could fix your sins tonight.

[edit]

This reminds me, back in 2008 I read the first 3 or so chapters of Billy Bat and thought "I'll let this finish so I can read it all without having to wait for the next chapter".

Fast forward 6 years...

"Original run October 16, 2008 – ongoing"

Goddammit

I got to that point with Walking Dead where I just wasn't very enthralled by it. It became very systematic. Something absolutely horrible happens, everyone is very quiet about it, they finally let go and talk about it, someone cries, they move forward until the next disgustingly horrible thing happens, repeat. Also add in some zombies. But yes, a part of me still wants to get caught up with it. Sometimes the horrible things are entertaining/thrilling in a way that makes you have to keep reading. Other times its like "oh, of course that fucked up thing would happen. Of course." and you just don't care about the world that Kirkman has made. I think thats what makes it a book thats better to read in trades (hell, maybe even wait for a couple trades to come out then every 5-6 months or whatever.)

Burnout seems to be a common complaint about Walking Dead. I bailed out long before the TV show and just recently continued with the comic again and now I'm really liking it again. Maybe it's best to take a break from it once in awhile to avoid getting bored with it.

Yea I bought the batman TAS soundtrack CDs and have gotten ton of use. I wonder if there's a website that collects fiction/music combinations.

And my comic backlog...like my game backlog *sigh* is so long I can't even list it. Like I have the whole monster series bought years ago..just sitting there. But when I hear good fiction I must have it! And 20th centry boys. Bought one vol...still haven't read it but hear good stuff

My "backlog" if you can even call is that.

100 Bullets Volume 4-10
Estrerios Polyp
Incognito 1-2
Sex Criminals 1

Today I read 3 volumes of 100 Bullets, gonna read some more later. As soon as I get stuff in the mail I start reading it so I normally really have a backlog.
