Guys, could you recommend me some good, standalone TPBs that were published in the last two years? Something like Wanted - self-contained, awesome story Can be s-f, fantasy, superhero - doesn't matter. I just want to read some good comic book that is not some part of a longer series and ends with cliffhanger or requires to buy another TPB

Off the top of my head, I'll recommend The Black Beetle by Francesco Francavilla and Six Gun Gorilla by Simon Spurrier.

Hopefully some other people can give some recommendations too, because I know I'm forgetting a ton of stuff.

Also, I'd consider reading some comics that aren't necessarily single, self-contained TPBs. Reading a long comic run can be an incredibly satisfying experience. Even single TPBs that are part of a larger story can usually be enjoyed almost as much on their own.

A 2 year window is pretty constricting. You'd be missing out on Last Days of American Crime and The Coffin or Marathon despite the fact that those comics don't feel dated at all.

Yeah. I'm curious about the reason for the two-year window. If it's because the person was heavy into comics and then stopped two years ago and now wants to see what they've been missing, I guess that makes sense.
If the two-year thing is to avoid dated comics though, then that's a bit silly. Dated comics don't really click with me at all, but when I was looking at my bookshelf to find books to recommend, I had to pass on most of my recommendations because they were more than two years old.

I'd say comics from the big 2 have been stylistically similar for the past 5-10 years... meaning it would be hard to date them based on art style / story mechanics alone. With that said, I've read plenty of indie comics from 25+ years ago that would not feel out of place had they been released today.

I just got my Alias omnibus in the mail, and funnily enough, contrary to what whatsinaname thought, I'm very impressed by the quality.
The binding is absolutely fantastic, laying perfectly flat even at the very beginning/end pages.
The pages are thin, but not necessarily too thin. I actually don't mind it, since it makes the 750-ish page omnibus much more compact and thus a much more comfortable reading experience.

I think it probably will, but it will be a much more comfortable ComicGaf Official Omnibus Reading Position than, say, Colossal Conan.

If anyone is in the mood for some horror comics to celebrate Halloween and don't want to just go with the traditional EC stuff, I would highly recommend checking out Charles Burns' Black Hole. It's one of my favorite stories to reread this time of year... not only is it incredibly unsettling, but it's a remarkably deep book about what it's like to be a teenager and how the combination of hormonal imbalance and the impending realities of adulthood make it such a strange time in our lives.

Oh, and the black and white artwork is absolutely masterful. It's amazing to me how consistent it is, seeing that the first and last issues were released about 10 years apart. I would post a few pages, but there are some definite NSFW images within it, so I can't risk it at work.

True, the binding is good. Maybe I am just spoiled by the other books I am reading at this time. (Fear Agent library and Blacksad). The paper for Alias almost feels transparent on pages that have a lot of white.

I feel like I probably have low standards in regards to paper quality. The only thing that's ever bugged me is when they use the super low quality stuff in manga. Like, I think Tokyopop used it near the end, and I know some (all?) of Viz's 3 in 1 line use it. Feels like tissue paper and you can literally see the other side of the page through it, nasty stuff.

How often do you have to delete your digital comics to make room for new ones? I remember running into that problem back when I went digital for a few months. I kept having to delete old issues to make room for new ones. Just a minor inconvenience since I could redownload them.

Yeah, Dark Horse uses incredibly thick paper which is pretty nice. If I'm honest though, the thickness of paper doesn't really matter that much to me as long as it's not so thin that the pages get stuck together or seem like they're going to rip when you turn the page. I remember my reading of Arkham Asylum getting totally screwed up because a few times I skipped pages because the paper was so thin and I didn't realize I was flipping two pages and not one.
The Marvel OHC/omnibus paper is on the thinner side, but it still seems like quality paper nonetheless.

I basically felt this way to after my first read through but after a reread about 6 months later, I couldn't believe how much my opinion had changed. Once I knew how the story would unfold, I began picking it apart like I would a great novel (I was an English major long ago) and I really appreciate how accurately it portrays the teenage psyche.

I upload everything that's DRM free to my Google Drive account and only keep what I am currently reading (plus my next titles in line) on the tablet itself. Anything I want to read on a whim only takes about 15 seconds to pull off the cloud.

Nope, it's out of print. I got lucky with my copies last year.

Jason Aaron's current run called Thor: God of Thunder is as good as it gets, unless you're willing to go into the old school Walter Simonson run (which I wouldn't recommend for someone just getting into comics). Start with the first volume, titled The God Butcher, and buy volume 2, Godbomb if you enjoy it!

This is basically exactly what I was going to say. Start with Aaron's God of Thunder, when you are ready, dig into the Simonson stuff.

I liked the Straczynski run too, and even Fraction's had its moments, but they're not even in the same weight class as Aaron's God of Thunder. If you find Simonson too old-fashioned, check those two out.

Someone else may want to chime in after me since I'm not a big Thor reader, but I think your best option is to start from the beginning of the most recent Thor run. It's really well-liked.
The first two volumes are here and here. It's kind of necessary to get both, since the two volumes make up the first story arc. If you just got the first one, you'll be left with a bit of a cliffhanger.
Or you could wait a few weeks and get the hardcover which contains both of those volumes.
