Confirmed - Joycon Latches Will Break If You Break Them (Giant Bomb)

I'm just saying that it was stupid from Giant Bomb to rant against the latches if they were the ones to broke it in the first place, and even more stupid when they're supposed to be professionnal.

Sorry to double-quote you, but just to make it clear, there was no rant. It was a couple of comments during that same stream that people plucked out of context and made a huge deal about.

I mean, if you use the Switch like a handheld as advertised by Nintendo, there's a real chance for something like this to happen.

If I drop my iPad on the floor it's not going to end well. There's only so much companies can do, the rest is down to the user to be careful.

Not really. I don't even know who that Jeff guy is supposed to be. I'm just saying that it was stupid from Giant Bomb to rant against the latches if they were the ones to broke it in the first place, and even more stupid when they're supposed to be professionnal.
Also, criticize other people's work doesn't mean that you're blinded by something else.

They haven't ranted against anything though.

"Oh, that's weird, I'll have to check it with a second console" was literally all it amounted to. Everything else was basically console warriors' fever dreams.

Come on now. It's a gif of a journalist putting a cartridge in his mouth. How is your first reaction supposed to be something else than "wew it's super dumb" ?
It's not like these subscribers-only stream are something common that everybody know.

My first reaction is "lol wat"

My second reaction is.... nothing, because I move on. I don't start a crusade against them and/or hold a grudge.

They need to get in front of this right now and issue a very public apology to Nintendo as well as their subscribers or they are really running the risk of wrecking their credibility. Permanently.

GiantBomb just shot themselves in the foot I don't know how much you the rest of you know about Electronics damage culture (I'm an expert),

If you know anything about Giant Bomb then it should be pretty obvious it's a complete goof and not some stress test bullshit like you find entire YouTube channels about

That cartridge probably would still work if it had to go through the whole digestive tract.

I don't get why fanboys seem so offended by them doing something dumb on a live stream anyway. They're covering fucking video games for god's sake, dumb shit is an important part of the industry.

Thankfully, that's not even close to what actually happened.

Every time it was mentioned Jeff was quick to say that they hadn't checked it with a second console. There was no ranting, the GIFs just show them fucking around with it. Giant Bomb didn't release an article titled "Joy-Con MORE LIKE JOY-CONMAN!" They just briefly talked about it during a subscriber only stream and a guy on NeoGAF decided to make it into a big issue.

Fooled by how overblown it was in past NeoGAF threads then. I'll know better next time.

I just made one comment, and I apologized later, that's a bit harsh to say that I started a crusade.

Well, I don't know that much about them, I'll know better next time.

THEY NEED TO GET OUT IN FRONT OF THIS!

Drop a 3ds on concrete.

I bet there's a good chance the hinges break or shoulder button is busted.

Drop a Vita on concrete.

I bet there's a good chance the screen is busted and/or a button pops off.

Ya, the first person to make a big deal out of it was the NeoGAF poster and it kinda got bigger from there. Mods were quick to realize it wasn't a big deal however and locked the thread.

Didn't know they locked that thread, good freaking call.

Good on you for being mature enough to realize you may have misinterpreted something. We need more people like you on the internet.

This is a major problem right now on GAF. Analyzing the source of information beyond what or how the OP presented it should be step 1 of reading any thread.

But it's not just GAF; it's the whole of information consumption right now on the internet. We all need to stop having knee jerk reactions or band-wagoning without actually thoughtfully considering the information first. It's a very, very bad trend.

Being self-aware enough to avoid doing it in the future is the important thing.

If you drop almost any device on the right angle it could break. Iphone screens shatter all the time from being dropped.

The issue is that it's impossible for NeoGAF to have a hardware launch without NeoGAF-brand hype monster apologist crusaders spinning some offhand, borderline off-the-record comment into some victim narrative about how the big bad game "journalists" are conspiring against our benevolent friends at Sony/Nintendo/MS, and that shit gets broken telephoned to a bunch of unsuspecting people like you. You're a victim of your own faith in NeoGAF hardware launch threads.

...I feel vindicated now.

Not sure what you're trying to prove but it's not making you look good. You obviously lack context for those gifs and at this point are too invested in your opinion to consider any other narrative. You're right about not following other people's opinions blindly but evidently not applying that principle correctly, or universally.

The question is how sturdy those locking tabs are on the joycons. If they are made of plastic are they going to last say 5-6 years?

If only there were a more durable version of the controllers, made from some sort of JoyConCrete.

I like you
What if the joycons are made of concrete, hence the bad syncing

Can't wait for the unavoidable thread "My friend wants to swallow a BotW Switch cart, so he can absorb the game"

All I know is my gut is saying "maybe".
Another thing to think about is that a traditional handheld can use either a rubber or plastic case while I don't believe you can have one that would protect both joycons and the Switch at the same time and would leave locking mechanism vulnerable.

In Skyzard's old thread, people were getting skewered for claiming that the problem most likely began when the system was dropped. You're right in that I should probably tone it down though. Thanks!

Yeah, dudes goofing around for fun on camera, so unprofessional
fridays
. You know this was premium content (IE: You need a sub to their site) which was super casual, laid back, and not advertised as some kind of official coverage or reporting on the Switch, right?

I'll be honest; I wasn't aware that this wasn't their official coverage. I just figured Unprofessional Fridays were coverage without Nintendo reps around, or something like that. I was just being childish, sorry.

Hey, I just want to say this: I saw the post before you edited it, and your edit and mea culpa are a) good and b) all-too-unusual online. Thank you for acknowledging it and not doubling-down in defensiveness.
