Might these companies be using the tariffs hubbub as a cover to do what they exist to do (i.e., maximize profits) while able to plausibly shift blame to a factor outside of their control?

As stated. That shit tech nothing old burger Switch 2017 launched at $299Might these companies be using the tariffs hubbub as a cover to do what they exist to do (i.e., maximize profits) while able to plausibly shift blame to a factor outside of their control?

Our main vendor at work just slapped a flat 20% at the bottom of every invoice. It hasn't even begun yet.Dude I'm debating buying another bike right now with these tariffs just in case something happens to my Trek and Breezers I use.
It's beyond madness how that trash garbage tech hasn't decreased a single cent since it released damn near a decade ago
So. The "rules" of the past 50 year old electronics no longer apply is what you're saying? It's unprecedented and never been done. Ever. Until now. Nintendo was pioneers of this (via Switch 1) and others now following. Not a console guy these days (outside my Nintendo device), but is early hardware really that bad? I remember early adoption being punished a couple generations ago (dieing 360s especially) but last generation was fine.
Don't be silly. If demand is sufficiently inelastic, of course the price will stay the same.

They'll use every excuse now to "make themselves" not the reason why it's not decreased or the reason it's increased.
Covid ENSURED this globally to be normal. We've lost. We lost this. It's over. And now any and all global "conflicts" will be used to fuck me in the ass. They now at least lube it first and make me feel better about it eh?
Please defend the decade old switch being $300....
I feel like I'm being yelled at from a soapbox.
Gaming has become so popular, and gamers so braindead, that companies can pull shit and we'll all still buy in like lemmings walking towards their doom
All those "I'd pay $1000 for a more powerful <insert console here>"
A lot of us did ask for it, but only if said power translates. Which sadly, I have doubts.
Just stop buying new consoles and play your backlogs instead. There has never been a better time to actually PLAY your backlogs.
If you execute this GIGABRAIN 175 IQ consumption strategy, you'll win massively.
A) You've actually played the games you payed for in your backlog.
B) By the time you've finished them all / or a good chunk of them, hardware and game prices will probably have gone down (or you'll be able to find good deals out there).
C) By not engaging in all this pricing madness, you actually increase the chances of the companies backtracking their price increases (provided, a big enough number of consumers follow suit).
Nobody in their right mind is buying an XBox Series X 2TB for USD $730. I don't understand why they even announced this new price. Just withdraw the product from sale.
dunno what other hobbies you like but gaming is insanely cheap, especially if you ignore AAA FOMO.Gonna? It isn't already?
So do Switch in 2017 and Switch in 2025dunno what other hobbies you like but gaming is insanely cheap, especially if you ignore AAA FOMO.
stuff is on sale constantly, especially after it's 6-8 months old
Depends on the product. Nintendo hasn't dropped the Switch a PENNY since launch. Garbage tech even in 2017. Yet sells like hot cakes regardless. 150 millionIs there any evidence that there has been a boost in sales due to increased pricing? Not sure I follow the logic on this.
Games go on sale on PSN, Xbox and yes, even Switch. So do Switch in 2017 and Switch in 2025
What you mean is PC gaming is cheap. I'll agree to that.
I said Switch. Read my post and read it again. Also do console prices from 2017 to now. You're not understanding lolGames go on sale on PSN, Xbox and yes, even Switch.
Granted, Nintendo 1P is the biggest stickler on price but the platform has plenty of cheap games to be had.
Just right now:
This is all 'modern' shit for less than $20. If that's expensive then I can't fucking help you.
- Hogwarts $18
- LEGO Skywalker Saga: $12
- MK1: $13
- MH Rise: $10, for $15 w/ Sunbreak
- RE2/3 Remakes: $10
- Guardians of the Galaxy: $9
more power just means more unoptimized schlock for the majority of devs. Doubt we'll see much of a difference going into next gen beyond better image quality and more raytracing
You ready for TLOU 1 remake remaster NEXT Gen Edition*?
Remasters are the oldest play in the playbookCallous, but in your desire to make a funny, you miss the real point of these remakes/remasters.
You don't continously need additional remakes/remasters, these games unlike their originals, even the ones recently released are far more scalable. Meaning they'll be easily patched on PS5 Pro and PS6 and even presumably PS6 Pro.
All of these games are going to run 4K120 on PS6 whereas most of the original games were capped to 60 fps and in many cases 30 fps.
Even the cheap "remaster" of Day's Gone is going to sing on PS6 with access to higher resolutions AND higher framerates. This allows single player AAA games to become "forever" games in way they haven't historically. Nintendo has benefited from this with their "AAA" games for years. It's a great thing to have these games have extended life cycles which will help ensure we continue to get single player AAA experiences in the future.
It's the first time console games will easily feature significant upgrades across multiple generations like PC...
I've mentioned it before, if Nintendo and Playstation get too demanding or hateful... I'll switch to a PC and pirate video games and use emulators.10 years ago, we waited for a price drop on consoles before we decided to buy in. We'll get the console at a lower price and enjoy the new games added as well as a later revision with less bugs and potential hardware defects. It was a good deal for all involved.
Nowadays, the concept has been flipped on its head. Companies are now using price INCREASES in order to sell consoles. Now, you either buy in with all the defects and lack of games, or you wait 3 years for a system with a decent library, less defects and whatever else.... for them to sell it to you at a 25-50% markup from launch price. They effectively use price FOMO in order to goad you into buying now.
It's a genius and evil inversal of the previous way of selling consoles.
I also fucking hate it.
Gaming's gonna get real expensive folks.
Tell me what price switch launched at (hint. It's $299)I've mentioned it before, if Nintendo and Playstation get too demanding or hateful... I'll switch to a PC and pirate video games and use emulators.
Remasters are the oldest play in the playbook
We saw MANY NES to SNES/Genesis remasters
This isn't going anywhere. Ever.
I dunno man. A potato can run any and all SNES remakesSee how you still fundamentally misunderstand how this is different? Remasters on the snes and genesis didn't then run on the n64 and saturn let alone run enhanced.
When the PS5 launched it had a catalog of enhanced BC games, but there was something inherently wrong with many of these games.
They didn't have DRS, they didn't have unlocked framerates ,they didn't have RT, they had dated lighting and shadows, e.t.c. They weren't built to simply run better on better hardware in most cases and in the cases they did, they were limited.
These games can no be designed to "forever" run better on better console hardware... that's REALLY new in the console space.
If you put Metal Gear Solid in a launch PS3, it would run, but it wasn't REALLY enhanced. In 2035, you're going to be able to run TLOUP2 on a PS7 and it just runs better... even better than it did on PS6... That wasn't going to be possible with the PS4 version.
The PS4 native version of TLOUP2 on PS5 patche still ran at 1440P upscaled to 4K and at 60 fps. The remaster on PS5 Pro runs at 1440P60 upscaled to 4K running at 60 fps (higher with VRR)... This game will likely run at native 4K90 on PS6... or upscaled 4K120. Again, not possible without the remastered version.
All for 10 dollars... GTFOH with your complaints.
Because you price things based off supply and demand in order to maximize profits. These are businesses, not charities. Not a SINGLE human can answer why shit mobile tech from 2017 (Switch) is still priced at $300. Not a single penny has it dropped. Why? No answers from anyone. Why?
I dunno man. A potato can run any and all SNES remakes
Anyhow. Not even upset with it. It's always been a trend and always will be. Remake or remaster what WAS popular and had an audience.
So you feel $300 is still a fair price for a machine that is piss old and less than a cheap phone?Because you price things based off supply and demand in order to maximize profits. These are businesses, not charities.
If they didn't sell, the price would drop. Switch continued to sell throughout the generation. Dropping the price would have only cost the company money and thus would have been a dumb decision.
And we are talking $299. You act like it's $2,999. If that's too much money, get a better job or a cheaper hobby. Hobbies, however, don't come much cheaper than gaming.
Eh. PlayStation was using CD's and loading was a major deal. Had its benefits but also its drawbacks. Can you run a native SNES game on any Nintendo device? No. This is a new value add to console gaming.
When Chrono Trigger got ported to PlayStation, it had terrible loading times. A lack of proper remaster means that the best ports out there are from the iOS build... which is nasty work...
I'm glad these games aren't getting lost like old generation games.
Depends on the product. Nintendo hasn't dropped the Switch a PENNY since launch. Garbage tech even in 2017. Yet sells like hot cakes regardless. 150 million
It's def a good product. But 0 chance it needs to retail for $300 for trashy android tablet decade old tech
Nintendo sells children toys, like LEGO, and those often don't down with price over time. Not a SINGLE human can answer why shit mobile tech from 2017 (Switch) is still priced at $300. Not a single penny has it dropped. Why? No answers from anyone. Why?
Eh. PlayStation was using CD's and loading was a major deal. Had its benefits but also its drawbacks.
Hence why the N64 was faster loading but couldn't do giant cinematic content
Trade off.
We have advanced. Now it's all digital basically and no holds barred. Nothing can stand in the way of anything.
But the PSX could still replicate pixel for pixel that overhyped SNES Shit RPG
I'm happy with a remaster. Maybe you're not getting my point. Maybe I'm not. Love a good remaster.Yeah, that's my point...
We're in a time where technology is allowing us to keep games alive as opposed to being left behind or simply emulated/ported in poor ways.
That should be something we all relish rather than downplay.
How are you not getting things? Oh you think CT is overhyped, that probably explains a lot.
My entire point was pissing on Nintendo for pissing down my leg and telling me it's rainingYeah, that's my point...

I bought a Para 3 from amazon for $108 in 2017!My other hobbies got hit way harder than gaming. Surprised it took this long. I'm fascinated by some of the reactions. Spyderco PM2 goes for $200 now at the cheapest places. Not even exaggerating. Gaming has gotten off incredibly easy. Aqua Terra? Try 6 fucking K. It's a warzone out there lads.
Got good deals on a mondraker, but across the board bikes already raised prices with the COVID demand so we're starting to get back actually, newer models cost less than last year's counterparts (at least here)...Dude I'm debating buying another bike right now with these tariffs just in case something happens to my Trek and Breezers I use.
That's why crossgen is a good thing. But what defects have you found in consoles of the last 2 generations that were fixed in revisions? Now, you either buy in with all the defects and lack of games,
Callous, but in your desire to make a funny, you miss the real point of these remakes/remasters.

That's what fries brain cells with the Xbox pricing. Out of the 3 console manufacturers, Microsoft by magnitudes has the least leverage to charge more due to the complete lack of mass demand or buzz for Xbox consoles. Nintendo and Sony have far more entrenched/captive audiences to raise prices( not that it doesn't suck in any case).Microsoft, who couldn't sell a console to save its life, has increased it prices. Which boggles the brain.
I'm just laughing. Absolutely laughing. It's beyond comprehension for me. Nintendo invented this, covid insured it, and now it's accepted and giant corpo's can do it and the little people like us can go "well they do have a tax to pay. It's ok". Like the sheep we all are
Comparing a $299 popular electronic to Apple prices is laughable. So you feel $300 is still a fair price for a machine that is piss old and less than a cheap phone?
Nintendo isn't a charity. And no one said they were. They are overpriced. Like Apple. Like many others.
This is what the publishers would like, sure.Maybe streaming is the future...As gross as that sounds.
Not a console guy these days (outside my Nintendo device), but is early hardware really that bad? I remember early adoption being punished a couple generations ago (dieing 360s especially) but last generation was fine.
