Corpse Party Book of Shadows |OT| Soup is Good for your Eyes.

Also about the Shangri-la Chapter:

I wish it was more fleshed out, it felt like it ended abruptly. I wish it showed how Morishige was killed off or something.

I kind of liked how poignant the ending was, especially with the use of Canon.
I believe the manga says he died by bashing his head against a wall then jumping through a window?

So I've heard a lot about this series, but for one reason or another I never picked up the original game. I just skimmed the OP, and it looks interesting. But if I told you I was a big fan of games like the Zero Escape series, Ace Attorney, Hotel Dusk, Another Code/Trace Memory, but I really disliked games like Amnesia: The Dark Descent (far too unsettling for my liking) would you recommend this game to me?

Also, is it good to start with this one, or should I buy the original?

So I got to chapter 2 in the first game and....it doesn't get any better.

I got trapped by the brain-dead enemy AI that just walks towards you in a tight corridor where you can't dodge.

I'm not having any fun at all with this game, so unless the sequel is 300% better.
Its a no-buy for me.

Definitely play the original first. Book of Shadows not only expects you to know the plot of the original, it also spoils the original game's ending in its opening movie. ;)

As for whether or not you'd like it, that's hard to say. if you enjoyed the Zero Escape series, my inclination would be to say yes, you probably would... but Corpse Party is much bleaker and more hopeless than the Zero Escape games. It's got a lot of very psychologically disturbing scenes, and really toys with your emotions.

Jump scares aren't much of a thing in Corpse Party, though -- it's more about unnerving situations and cruel deaths. If you think you'd be cool with that, then I'd say give the games a try -- but remember going into the first game that chapter 1 is kind of unfair, and expects you to explore every room you possibly can before entering the infirmary, lest you get a bad ending and have to do it all over again.

Trust me, you'll be glad to know that little morsel of information. ;)

And Dan: If you're still not enjoying it in chapter 2, then it sounds like Corpse Party definitely isn't the game for you. Book of Shadows' gameplay is completely different (the RPGMaker approach was ditched in favor of a point-and-click first-person adventure style), so it's likely you'd prefer that -- but it still sounds like you wouldn't like it much. The draw of Corpse Party lies in its story and atmosphere, yet you're getting hung up on its gameplay, which suggests you really aren't being "drawn in" to the game very well. And if the first game isn't immersing you, the second probably wouldn't either.

So I mistook this for the first game released on PSP; played the first episode and had no idea really what was going on. By the end I understood, within the context of the episode. Now I know I need to play the first game before I continue. I really ended up liking it though; man, it's quite odd.

So I avoided the entire thread, discussion and spoilers. I have played the first Corpse Party.

What should I know before I play this?

And then you'll want to replay to see the bad ending anyway! You can't win!

I do scare easily enough to have put it down though, but then that was only half of it: I cleared that first chapter, only to be stuck in the second thanks to that
jerkass ghost boy wandering the halls
. But if I'm to get help on that I'd be better off reviving the OT for that in off topic. It's a reason I haven't jumped on this yet though, otherwise that'd have definitely been day 1.

If you played the first Corpse Party... then you're all set. Give this one a go and let it all be a surprise. ;)

...Actually, wait. One thing you should know: make sure you have your save data from the first game on hand when you start up Book of Shadows. Loading it will net you some bonus CGs and easier access to the final chapter.

I can help you with that, actually.

If you're constantly being caught by him right as you exit the entranceway, the trick is simply to immediately turn around and go back IN the entranceway. Doing this will trigger an additional cutscene, and then when you go back out, he'll be much farther away and easier to avoid.

If you're constantly being caught by him elsewhere... well, remember that amethyst at the start of the chapter? Have Ms. Yui give it to Ayumi. It allows you to touch the ghost boy one time without dying. It's kind of like your one-time use "get out of jail free" card. ;)

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Regarding the Amethyst in CP:
won't it change the ending or something for Ms. Yui? Some people say Ms. Yui should keep the Amethyst, others say Ayumi should keep it.

Hmm, either I simply don't know where to go then, or
I somehow managed to slip past him ANYWAY and forgot, but I seem to recall heading back into the school entrance. Guess I'll just have to try going in there anyway and seeing what happens first, then poking around more
. Thanks either way.

As far as I'm aware, it has no bearing on the ending whatsoever.
Though its chapter 3 equivalent, the ridiculous caramel beads (seriously, how is Yuka 14?!), can definitely affect THAT ending quite significantly!

Start on the original.

Corpse Party isn't scary, just morbid. It pushes itself well beyond distasteful, but that's part of what makes it interesting.

Actually, I suppose the best word isn't even fear, but dread. You know you're going to see something horrible or hav something horrible happen, and there really may not be much you can do. If that can get you worked up too much then it may be hard to recommend, but it's not like things will take you by surprise too often I believe.

Distasteful and dread aren't bad in my books. What I didn't like about Amnesia was more the jump scares, but this might be more up my street.

I'll give the first one a whirl once I've cleared a few more games off my backlog, and see how I feel.

Thanks for the tip too, wyrdwad, I'll keep that in mind when I play it.

Huh? Okay. Not that I'm complaining, makes me wonder why they exclude so many countries at first at all.
Will buy it immediately if it really goes online later on.

Just checked with Jess on this, and confirmed that... that should hopefully be the case indeed. I guess there's some extra language-related submission materials required for those countries that she's taking care of? She said to tell you her Google Translate Fu is mighty (terrible), but she'll try to get the game ready for you guys a.s.a.p. anyway. ;)

Sorry for the delay!

A guide most likely won't be necessary for getting the true ending to each chapter, though there are some pretty obscure wrong ends that you might have trouble finding without one. I'd say play through normally to start, and if you find yourself missing any endings along the way, consult a spoiler-free walkthrough to help you get them -- that's probably the best compromise.

Just finished chapter 1. Damn, this game seems to be even sicker than the first game. And it sounds great on headphones, those flies, ugh.

-continues to cross fingers that Corpse Party and Book of Shadows may eventually get a PC version-

Woes of being a horror enthusiast on PC, but I think with the recent cult popularity of 2D horror games on PC, it could do pretty well for itself.

Bought this yesterday from the Italian PSN. Will be a little bit before I get a chance to play it though, but at least I casted my vote for more Corpse Party (in Europe =P).

Well I'm at the second decision point in Chapter 3 and I'm surprised to see that
Ms. Yui had a brush with death at the hands Mr. Mysterious Black Figure which I am assuming is the Principal's son or that old woman based on the last few lines of her first wrong ending (gotta watch out for those doors).

For some reason I thought bad stuff only started happening at the start of the first game, but since you find students in HHE who have been there for various periods of time based on descriptions, I guess people have been getting sucked into there for a while now.

To clarify I'm surprised that the real world is being affected since I thought Sachiko and Yoshie were only active 30 years prior to the start of the game and had not appeared at all in the real world since the since they were in HHE land.

We already kinda knew Yoshie had appeared in the real world before, thanks to the opening of the first game -- remember, the story Ayumi told before the ritual was pretty much the tale of Principal Takamine Yanagihori killing himself, and Yoshie "slipping and falling" down the stairs, haunting the halls at 7pm on rainy nights afterward.

Despite being established, though, it was never really known for sure that it was anything other than an urban legend.
