Hmmm

Idk pinch to zoom was pretty fucking amazing when the iPhone came out. I can't think of any other device that did that previously. It seems obvious now, but at the time of the iPhone unvieling everyone was pretty impressed with this UI innovation.
I get that feeling with a lot of the UI stuff. People say how obvious it is, but if it's so obvious why weren't phones doing it before 2007?

Court reconvening in 4 mins while both sides double check the numbers.

yea, those numbers....lol

Phone wars have really become the new console wars, haven't they?
Absolutely.

Console wars have been tame for a long time. But Apple versus Android is the Sega vs. Nintendo of our times. I have seen grown adults having schoolyard debates over them. I have seen anti-Apple graffiti. I have seen people get emotional over a patent law court case.

It's the equivalent of shitting your pants at school, hiding it until recess so you can tell your teacher, then the teacher runs outside and tells everyone. Hilarious yes, but there should also be some expectation of privacy in a private message. I don't personally care, and there were actually a couple of times that I thought about doing the same thing, but I didn't because like I said I swear I've seen people get banned for it.
Actually it's more like someone putting their shitty pants in my locker.

Samsung loses a landmark patent case, GAF argues over whether PM's are sacred.

I mostly weep for the S3; It seems like a nice iPhone alternative. I understand that the precedent is the important takeaway though.

The S3 should be completely unaffected, but with rulings like this, who the fuck knows?

No no no, the jury are just big dumb idiots! Poopy faces!

The jury system is absolutely wack, c'mon son. Fundamentally, I can't get behind it.

That being said, a case like this is one of those cases where I feel even more that a jury system should absolutely not be utilized. It's extremely technical, not something I would want someone not an expert in the field to really deliberate on.

It's obvious the Jury made some serious snaffus, considering that the same phone across 2 different carriers sometimes didn't infringe the same -

And honestly KHarvey, you're usually better than that, I know people give you a lot of shit - but I'd expect you to be able to step back and see the legitimacy in what a lot of people in this thread are saying.

You don't fuckin' get to make analogies anymore.

Wasn't Apple already the single richest company in the world, now with $1 billion USD more to them?

You know when people say "it's the principle"? 381 was pretty special to Steve. And now every Android handset maker in the world that keeps rubber band scrolling in is going to have to pay $$$ to Apple.

Although you shouldn't be able to get a patent on software in the first place.

1 billion is chump change to Apple.

Samsung is also worth a couple hundred billion in total, so they can absorb the monetary damages...
I'm wondering what will happen to their product in stores though. If they can't sell anything, then, they really are up a creek.

No, it's more like a work colleague telling you to go fuck yourself, and then you tell your other colleagues about it. Instead of keeping quiet and going straight to HR, while everybody else thinks the other colleague is still a good guy.

well, they lost a ton of money. hopefully they'll make some interesting and creative changes in the areas where the violations were found to have occurred, so that they can deliver to consumers a more unique product that can stand on its own two.

Like the SGSIII? Its the best selling phone this year, I think Samsung had already learned their lesson.

And while I hate all this patent crap, Samsung was just WAY too obvious with the early Galaxy phones. Way too blatant, they needed to get slapped down.

Yep, the jury fucked up. And I'm not surprised at all.

So a jury spits out a verdict we don't agree with and suddenly the jury system is fundamentally "whack"?

That's not the point. $1 billion isn't really gonna matter either way for Apple. The point is the precedent set here.

Exactly. The problem going forward is that software patents will be worth more than gold and every company will seek to patent EVERYTHING if the prior atmosphere didn't do so already.

So a jury spits out a verdict we don't agree with and suddenly the jury system is fundamentally "whack"?

Juries can make incorrect decisions, especially if they see evidence in a very strange light. That's what appeals are for.

Samsung are fucking huge yeah, 9th highest revenue of any company in 2011, against Apple in 43rd.

If this decision we're in a judges hands only that Judge would have taken a minimum of two weeks to go through these charges maybe even longer. It is dispicable that this jury took so little time to go through all these massive charges, it just reeks of them wanting to wash their hands of this so they could move on with their lives.

it's the equivalent of some kid making a paper airplane and throwing it at your head and it hits you and you open it because there's some writing and they sent you a note that says "i fucked your mom" and you show it to everyone in class. and you're in a college class.

Interesting enough perspective

I'm not worried for Samsung - 1bil for Samsung isn't a big deal, maybe in appeals they can know that down to 500mil. No, I'm mostly worried about the precedent this sets for Apple, and if they're going to let this carry them to trial against Google.

The issue with that is, I don't know if it could possibly be worth it for them - I don't think they could get damages? But maybe they could pull all Android phones off shelves, which... well, not good.

The S3 should be completely unaffected, but with rulings like this, who the fuck knows?

If Apple is vindictive, I guess they could try for an injunction on the basis that the S3 has pinch to zoom (I assume it does anyway). I'm not a lawyer of course, so I'm basing this assumption on nothing.

gonna guess everyone expects a long appeals process and eventually some sort of settlement or something.

I expect Apple to get paid. Didn't it come out that Samsung was offered the use of their patents for a few hundred million? Anyone that doesn't pay going forward is going to get fucked.

Amazing analogy. EvilDick shit his pants.

Fuck, that's what I for trying to post while doing multiple other things :(

I'm sure you get the point either way, I'm actually surprised we haven't seen a mod in here yet who can clarify if that's bannable or not. I'd actually like to know.

Now we get to see companies cannibalize other companies over these things. Oh hilarious capitalism and copyrights u.

That is exactly what they did, spit out a ruling on 700 charges in 3 days. I again ask anyone in here, if you had to rule on all these charges responsibly would it only take you 3 days?
