I wonder what caused him to hit a tree?

At 100 mph, braking or turning even slightly too hard can start a chain reaction of events and over-compensating moves that result in a complete loss of control. I was going just 60 on the freeway once and had to hit the brakes and turn slightly to avoid some jackass merging into me, and if I weren't an experienced driver and known how to handle the beginnings of the spinout I would have gone off the road.

Im ok if they raise the driving age to 18. I was not ready at 16 or 17 man. I almost got my Lic. suspended twice for speeding.

no.

it wouldnt even matter if that was the case because the guy didnt even have a license or a permit to begin with.

I think you're reading too much into wikipedia article about butterfly effects, or you just learned about it.

3 pretty girls, 2 best friend, 1 souped up car, fast driver (100 mph insanity) = disaster waiting to happen.
That equation of yours doesn't make shit sense.

With that said, I hate drivers who decide to go on a joyride with others lives at stake.

Jesus, imagine if the father would've acted as a "cool dad" and allowed him to go with them. I feel sorry for all the families, it's a shame that it happened.

Tragic. This is why more people need to take driving more seriously. So easy to kill yourself, your passengers, and others on the road with a vehicle.

The video says it was a girl who was supposed to go but didn't but the article says a boy? Is it just 2 seperate articles or did I warp into an alternative reality while in this thread?

Hopefully by the time I have kids, all cars on the road will be robotic, and I won't have to deal with this shit.

People drive recklessly all the time but crashes only happen in specific circumstances, if the other guy had been there then the specific circumstances will have changed and thus the crash would have been unlikely to happen (at least this time)
This post is insane. You don't honestly believe it, do you? Guy would have been driving just as fast and just as recklessly.

Conversely, maybe having a responsible young lad in the car to talk sense into the driver might have saved all their lives. Probably not, but you never know.

Considering he didn't care that the driver didn't even have a permit, I find this very, very unlikely.

how fast were they traveling? how the fuck does a tree fucking split a car that's made out of steel and metal?!

shit sense? You're right. It makes perfect sense.

No. It doesn't make shit sense. Lets look at what you stated:

"3 pretty girls, 2 best friend, 1 souped up car, fast driver (100 mph insanity) = disaster waiting to happen."

So what you are saying if that there were 3 ugly girls, or maybe 1 best friend, this would never happen? Or if the car was not a souped up car, this disaster would never happen?

It is shit analogy because you are saying that these kids deserved it as they should've known about this "disaster waiting to happen".

How about "Driving without any permit or license or any experience, and driving way over the speed of limit = disaster waiting to happen."

100mph is a crazy speed to be driving on. The speed is the reason for the death of them all. The irresponsible driver is the reason for the death of them all. Do not try to blame the "3 pretty girls". It's the driver's fault, pure and simple.

So let's recap: "The young man identified by a coroner as the driver in a single-car crash that killed five teenagers did not have a driver's license or a learner's permit, California DMV officials said Wednesday." One irresponsible driver = disaster waiting to happen.

How does this even happen? I smell an epic lawsuit.

The car was traveling at a high speed, hit an unmovable object. Cars are not tanks, the front end is designed to crumple to reduce the force impact on the passengers, but in this case, the speed and moving into a tree is like an apple being dropped on a knife.

I'm glad that it was a fault of the driver. If I was in the son's shoes and it was another driver responsible, I'd be thinking, "if I went along, maybe I'd have slowed the departure time by a few minutes, meaning they wouldn't crash!"

Wow.

Oh, I doubt that based on his reaction. I imagine he's wishing they just didn't die.

Speaking of death, I've always wondered - does your mind slow down your perception of time when you're about to die? Can you see it coming and not react? Is there time for last thoughts?

I doubt it. I imagine it's kind of similar to passing out, at least for sudden deaths.

That's crazy

R.I.P.

off the record cute girls too.

wtf dude.

What an idiot getting his friends killed in his suicide run.

No one should even think about doing such risks when it involves other people.

and 9 times out of ten nothing bad would have happened, just on this particular occasion he crashed into a tree, as I said i'm not trying to excuse the idiot driving just disputing the OP's conclusion

That is a terrible tradgedy. This is why my parents never let me get in the car with anyone when I was a teenager because we don't know their driving habits. Rest in peace kids :(

This is so tragic. I feel bad for thinking this but Final Destination immediately came to mind, as in the young man who didn't go but was supposed to go.

No thinking was involved in this crash, I can guarantee that.

Young male driver, girls in the back seat and a (fast) car leads to stupidity.

Why the hell was he driving such a powerful car??

In the UK the common thing is for an 18yo who passes their test drives something similar to what I have. 02 reg Fiat Punto.

If my car ever got to 100mph it would shake itself apart xD

not forgetting its not even common at all in the uk for someone that age to actually have passed their test anyway as few teens can afford to drive any more

Speeding like crazy

17 yrs old

No license OR permit.

Yeah id say the father feels good for keeping his son home. The lot of you with the butterfly effect comments are tripping - the driver, car and mix of teenagers was a recipe for disaster

True. I've had to have a black box fitted in mine just to make the insurance fit(don't get me started). And I share it with my sister now too. I'm 20 she's 18.

This is why at times I think graduated licensing is important especially if the system is going to let 16 year olds start driving. I've only driven on a freeway once and it was with an instructor. I don't think many people respect/fear how dangerous a car really is until it's too late.
