The Daily Fail is the best selling UK newspaper and is dedicated to spouting the most spiteful vitriol imaginable, with none of the attempt at humor other tabloids occasionally go for. They also have very successful clickbait site that is banned from GAF.

Wednesday they had an article with this headline:

Employs someone who smokes pot and likes sex!
Editor wants to be paid 1/5 of the Daily Mail's editor!

For the rest of the post I'll quote an Op-Ed critiquing their article:

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/dec/23/why-is-mail-online-going-after-fact-checkers-snopes
The Daily Mail isn't the best-selling UK paper, the Sun is
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_newspapers_in_the_United_Kingdom_by_circulation

The Mail isn't far behind, is far more poisonous and somehow has a largely middle-aged and older audience who still think it's a respectable rag with its general position of anything that happened after the 1950s is anethema to 'right-thinking Brits'. 'Right-thinking' being the operative term. Politicians are terrified of it because it's readership actually votes.

The Mail Online is the largest online news site though, with profits soaring and even 200 staff in the US these days, but like all papers the print edition is losing circulation and ad revenue year by year.

How can so many people buy into bigotry and hate?
And the second biggest is exactly the same (Murdochs the sun).

Because a large section of middle England are hateful individuals. The poor, migrants and anyone not right wing are all their favourite targets.

So the same people who went after Gawker for the same reasons is now applauding this sort of thing. Shows how full of shit they are.

The government didn't even deem it necessary to properly call them out when they went with that "Enemies of the People" headline a few weeks ago. I mean, this is some straight Nazi shit they're pulling here:

We were supposed to stop joking about the daily mail supporting the nazis in the 30s because everything had changed now but it seems that it's not even a joke any more.

I don't see why they shouldn't report it if those allegations are true, embezzling company money for prostitutes goes much further than "like sex".
Of course, it's daily mail so there is likely chances that they speak out of their ass.

The war on news and facts is in full swing.

Alex Jones is also coopting the fake news concept and going on the offensive.

After years of nit giving a fuck, I feel the term "fake news" finaly revealed the emperor has no clothes, but their reaction is trying to convince their stupid readers that other news is fake.

As a skeptic, I never thought this would gonas far as it has, and this is just the beginning.

sooo are they wrong?

Forbes did a follow up article and basically got "no comment" as the answer

Whether the claims made are factual or not is irrelevant -- the divorce records and sexual histories of private citizens have nothing, even plausibly, to do with their public-facing roles as politically engaged individuals. It's a transparent smear campaign; when you can't knock down their work, you knock down them as people. Is there evidence that Snopes incorrectly fact-checks about pot or prostitutes owing to the allegations? No, not really, you're just meant to come up with the conclusion that fact checkers are scumbags and to ignore their valuable work.

That article reads really bizarrely, like its hundreds of words dedicated to how personally the author took the "no comment" and above all how he feels about it.

It was with incredible surprise

This absolutely astounded me.

It is impossible to understate

That is actually a fascinating response

surprisingly David demurred

This was highly unexpected

Even more strangely

More troubling

it is surprising

deeply unsettling

deeply troubling

He even ends up saying it doesn't matter if the Daily Mail's article is true or not because Snope's response to him was so bad.

Sad to see that the attack on fact-checkers--especially a site as well-known and reputable as Snopes--has started to spread from the crazies into the mainstream.

I mean I saw a few people during the election season talking about how lol snopes is left-wing propaganda, but given its history I just drew the obvious conclusion that those people were morons. But this, ugh. For people who complain about politicization so much, the right's politicization of fact-checking is pretty pathetic.

It seems war on fact checkers in underway. The other day whoever was subbing for Hannity was going all in on Snopes.com. i forget who the piece of shit was but he was just tearing them a new one over how they looked (ugly fat slobs). i go to search their names from the article in the OP and this is in the top 5 images on Google for them
They didn't even try with that Photoshop.

I saw Breitbart, Daily Caller, and RedState all calling snopes leftist propaganda in the last week as well, after their recent partnership with Facebook.

Really summing up how we live in a post-truth world where feelings matter more than facts, huh. Incredible.

I find it entertaining when people post Mail links of GAF and wonder why it's banned. Not shocked they're going after fact checkers - they must be Murdoch's worst nightmare.

I saw that happening before the election ended even. Multiple "they were 'wrong' one time on something so instead of reading them I'm just going to assume this article about clinton is true" posts. But I assume "omg I heard that guy had an affair" is just meant to help people continue to not bother to read articles or sources.

I'm not surprised. Snopes has all the citations you could possibly want and is often one of the first results when you search a fake news report on Google; they would basically be public enemy number one for anti-truthers.

I'm actually anxiously awaiting the first time I get someone on Facebook trying to tear into me for sharing a Snopes link. For me, at least, people tend to just not engage any any further when I post a Snopes link.
