Why would Junko lie about that anyway.

Did she realize the brainwashing anime/snuff video was stupid and decided to make herself look cooler?

Despair 10
Why couldn't they look away? Was Junko live editing this shit for the brainwashing to happen?Dumb dumb dumb dumb

Maybe it wasn't done in real time? Both Chiaki and the rest of the DR2 cast get to the same red door that leads to the trial room (whose location apparently got retconned compared to its original location on both DR1 and DR0, but let's disregard that for the moment). It's possible that Chiaki died before they got there and then Junko went and edited the whole thing.

Also, should we keep using spoilers or not? Funimation hasn't released the episode, as far as I know.

Of course, that goes without saying.

Might as well be the Ultimate something else at that rate, then. It's such an awfully simplistic, throwaway explanation for the phenomenon. I don't like it.

We're to assume that the Ultimate Analyst, with a better human understanding than an Ultimate Animator, couldn't come up with those techniques herself?

Maybe she doesn't know how to operate Final Cut Pro.

Was it said that the brainwashing part was why he got into Hope's Peak?

I assumed that he researched the techniques specifically for the anime he was cutting class to make, not something he knew before he came to the school.

...But yeah, why couldn't Junko have thought of this herself?

what happened was Kodaka got burnt out on the series, ended up with an 11 episode anime about the DR2 cast which clearly isn't enough time to do what was implied in the game, so he went "fuck it just brainwash em"

But it does? And that line's actually from the real Makoto, not the fake one.

True, but in that game, it could have easily been interpreted as him saying she manipulated them over a long period of time, not literal cartoon brainwashing. The description the game set out suggested a more character based, prolonged campaign of manipulation and despair perpetrated by Junko on the remnants, but the anime just explained it with full on Loony Toons logic.

We can argue forever what the game really intended, but it's clear to me what would have made for more interesting writing.

I personally wish the brainwashing was only used for the reserve students (it didn't make sense for Junko to have controlled all of them in the game), but she manipulated the remnants herself. Best of both worlds if you ask me.

Well, trial ended, let's see what we get

Yeah, Despair Arc has been disappointing. I said this before but Despair Arc would have been more interesting as a story set between DR1 and DR2, following the Remnants of Despair and their battle with the Future Foundation. Instead of trying to cram all the prequel material into 11 episodes while also trying to put in all the Future Arc stuff.

That's what I'm thinking as well.

Wish we could get Kodaka to directly address this, but I don't know what Japan is saying about the series so far, so he might be unaware of the complaints.

Umm, yeah that was brutal. Was never a huge fan of Chiaki, still not. Despite that, that was a nasty way to go. So, who creates AI Chiaki? I thought "Chihiro was the creater and modified by Alter Ego" it even says it in her wiki. Are they gonna retcon it? Because Chiaki never interacted with Chihiro, so how can she make a AI based on someone she never met.

O...oh

I.. I don't think Chiaki is dead. Izuru is gonna do something, her hairpin reminded him of her. It just had to...

Even though she is just an AI in DR2, I'm still trying to figure out how anyone from the FF found out about her, her personality and programmed it into Alter Ego.

And yes, Munakata kills Juzo because he betrayed him. P4 Protag probably never knew he had feelings for him.

Fucking Mikan...

Man, that shot just before the eyecatch was such a tease.
If the whole execution had been in the games' style, with a shorter length and the usual pumpin' music, the scene would have been way, way more effective. The scene already evoked memories of Pekopeko's execution, with the hero valiantly resisting an insurmountable force until ultimately falling due to one moment of despair; and plus, it would have been perfect for the Super Duper Gamer to die in a way that reflected the games.

That aside, though, Despair stays winning and Mikan stays best (given that Mukuro and Komaru weren't in the episode, at least). They should just cancel Future and give another episode to Despair.

Does DR2 Chiaki really resemble the one shown here? I don't think they're especially similar aside from the obvious interest in games.

Why would Junko lie about that anyway.

Did she realize the brainwashing anime/snuff video was stupid and decided to make herself look cooler?

The fake Makoto also says that they were infected by Junko's despair due to coming into contact with her, but the real Makoto at the end claims that they were just brainwashed. So, there's some evidence that it was intended to be a lie all along.

Yup. That was terrible.
•Brainwashing
•Shock value torture porn
•Boringly predictable Chiaki death
•Izuru did nothing wrong
I hate that Despair arc has driven me to a point where I absolutely don't give a shit that Chiaki dies because it really shouldn't make me feel that way.
This also retroactively ruins a good amount of Nagito's characterization as an ultimate despair since it was completely believable that he remained largely the same as before, but allied himself with Junko to create enourmous despair for an enourmous hope. Subjecting him to the brainwashing as well takes away his decision to do so, making him much less interesting.

And it's kind of BS if they expect us to believe that Junko is applying the brainwashing effect (that she needed Mitarai for in the first place) in fucking real time since it's clear that they are watching a live feed.

I think that's just because it's anime. Everyone looks a little bit different.

I don't mean her appearance, but her general behavior and character. I don't think they need some excuse to scan her mind into the game, since AI Chiaki really isn't that similar personality-wise to the real one.

The one big thing that stuck out to me was her being tired, but I believe it was explained (or theorized) that it was because she's an AI.

poor juzo, even his big character moment gets overshadowed in the end yet again

also congrats show, i said there was no way you could make me like juzo, yet here we are, i like him

also, i'm pretty damn interested to see what on earth despair side will cover with their next episode

For me last week's lobotomy was a lot harder to watch. This was sad, but I didn't have as much of a visceral reaction from it. This has seemed so obvious for so long that I actually thought it was too obvious and Kodaka would try to switch it up and let the Ultimate Waifu live. I think the other big thing for me is that Chiaki is such a nothing in DR3. I just didn't connect with her in this anime, and she's felt like such a sue here (I know someone will probably point out that she had some of these characteristics in DR2, but they felt worse here).

Her death being used with the brainwashing as the trigger for Despairification sucked, especially with how quickly it happened, but I knew the brainwashing was going to be shit anyway so whatever.

Also, wtf is with this anime/video power? How did Ryota of all people invent it? This is the type of power or technique I would expect from the Ultimate Neurologist or even the Ultimate Therapist, not the Ultimate Animator.

I did like them confirming Juzo as gay. I do like him, but I sort of wish he had been in a game and had more space to grow and shine. Either way, he's still a huge fucking dumbass

I expect AI Chiaki's creator to be retconned to Izuru - it seems that faded emotions from Hajime still remain in him, so he may be interested in investigating why this person was so important to his previous personality (of course, we have to ignore that their interaction was spare at most in the anime, but let's roll with it for the time being).

I also get the sense the creator of the Chiaki AI will be retconned into Izuru.

I am sort of wondering if they'll just retcon some things and make it so that he invented the NWP by himself to revert both himself and the other remnants. edit; disregard, I just remembered that episode 2 mentions Miaya having worked on the NWP.

If Izuru is there creator of Chiaki's AI (certainly a possibility considering the fact that he has done nothing wrong so far) the question remains why he infects the NWP with the Junko AI.

If I disliked a show this much I would've dropped it even with 3 episodes left

Eh, some people like watching things to critique rather than for just entertainment. Critiquing isn't something I really enjoy doing (feels like doing school work or chores), so I usually just watch shows unburdened with trying to do a critical analysis.

Whatever floats their boats.

heh something cool that's DR3 related.

This is the main character of Danganronpa V3, Kaede Amamatsu. She is voiced by Sayaka Kanda who not only played Junko and Mukuro on stage, but is also half of TRUSTRICK and sings the opening theme, Dead or Lie, of DR3 Future.

Uh, I wasn't aware that the candy's effects had anything to do with sexual orientation...?

what, it doesn't make you fall in love with Ruruka or anything....its pure addiction, crack candy

I thought it was a love potion type candy, I don't think just being addicted to the candy would compel you to do everything ruruka said. I also thought it was implied that Izayoi was in love with Ruruka because of the candy.

this is a series were fireworks and video editing can paralyze and brainwash you.

The only thing said about the candy was that it was addicting like hard narcotics, you do whatever she says because she's the only one who can give you more candy/drugs.

it was a theory that blacksmith was controlled for most of his life, his death scene showed that he really did love Ruruka but those two things aren't mutually exclusive.

So as far as the fanbase is concerned, can we mark this down as the most evil thing Junko has directly done?

I would say so. At least with the executions in DR1 they were for those who arguably deserved it. No one had to kill each other - they did it out of greed and insecurities. Those who worked together lived and escaped. With hopes peak tragedy, at least they could have overcome mukuro and Junko if they didn't kill the fuck out of each other

With chiaki, it was simply torture and murder of an innocent girl for no reason other than to horrify others and for her own enjoyment. And she had absolutely no chance of escape.

bleh, I'm just gonna go with my headcanon on this one since I like it better than "juzo doesn't fall for the mind control just because"

Still wish there was some kind of satisfying end for Junko herself after Kodaka upped her evilness ten fold :/

how do you even do that, she enjoys it when her carefully laid plans crumble, she couldn't wait to experience death, she'd probably get high on despair if you tortured her......

what can you really do to Junko?
