Dark Souls II - Graphics Comparison - PC Preview

Seems good enough! Playing at almost three times the framerate makes it the go to version for me, but sadly I'll be out around release for a month. >; My poor lappy probably can't play it so I'll have to dig in when I get home.

My bad, I should have said faux-Souls fans. No actual Souls fan would skip out on this game because it doesn't look as good as pre-release trailers. It's a great game packed with content and as someone who has beaten it multiple times, I'm glad the original lighting is gone. Personally I didn't like Tomb of the Giants that much either!

In all honesty, that's not much better. Just because they don't agree with what From/Namco have done with the marketing of this game doesn't make them any less of a fan than the people who double/triple dip without a second thought.

I like the Tomb of the Giants.

haha i knew the old lighting engine would not make the PC build ether, glad i didnt bother waiting for this and just played it on the ps3

Note that this is made from a video, which obviously reduces the quality of both sides.

I chose this spot since it shows the texture and shadow resolution differences well.

Confirmed support for resolutions above 1080p and a framerate higher than 60.

Would always be nice. But I'm not surprised most companies don't put in the resources for something the vast majority of players won't take advantage of.

haha I was wondering when someone would say that people who don't buy the game because of the downgrade aren't "real" souls fans.

Someone probably made that claim in the first page of the first thread about the lighting downgrade. :P

Seems like a great PC port. People that were expecting completely overhauled lighting compared to the console versions from the people that brought us like the first resolution locked 3D PC game are nuts.

They say it was mouse and kb controls and some last second refinements.

could be to get double dippers.

Yeah mouse and kb controls which will still probably be shitty because this just isn't the kind of game that plays well with them. I'm sure all pc gamers like getting the game 2 months later for in exchange for controls they won't use.

keep showing and hyping it as if it was going to be like the reveal demo, not showing what the game actually look like till late january and not showing the PC version till now( and just removing the bullshots from steam), putting one on the box and you really think they didn't do it on purpose?

From began showing off retail console footage at trade shows in early/mid January, and never deviated from that path.

Journalist sites were still showing TGS footage in late January, but I would attribute that to ignorance and that does not fall on From at all.

The retail box and Steam page were most likely assembled by a community manager or PR team who don't follow the game as closely as we do or the developers. I would chalk up those issues to complete oversight.

Nonsense. I don't support shitty business practices. Dark Souls 2 can be the greatest game ever made as far as I'm concerned.

And of course, I was waiting for the boring argument that better lighting = tomb of the giants.

Higher resolution, sharper textures, double the framerate and cheaper? Yeah, I'm fine with that. I'm sure there will be people that can mod the game into something even better, but for now it's good enough.

That looks like exactly the same shit I had to deal with in Dark souls 1.

Looks more like a function of lag than hitboxes.

Yes because lag all of a sudden kicks in for one move -___-

I don't ever recall hitboxes being that bad in Dark Souls. With lag yeah but thats not lag. Its certain weapons and certain moves from them.

Like in DS1, chain mail gets the brunt of the resolution improvement.

since From said the PC is lead version I think people were hoping for something more than just upper res+60 fps.

I already beat the ps3 version. If I ever want to play through it again I will pick it up on pc. Definitely waiting until a steam sale though.

Looks just like the Retail PC game
People like to forget that we had threads about DS2 screenshots for a while before the retail got out and all of them seemed to all agree that the screenshots looked "hella ugly."

60 FPS and Higher Resolution are great in my book, without Durante needing to modify it.

I was skeptical about the lighting in the first place, they never confirmed whether or not they finished implementing it before they removed it.

cannot wait.

Will double-dip on PC...

60fps/1080p is more than enough for me.

I never saw the pre-release trailers/marketing stuff and I don't preorder games because of marketing.
When the ps3 version released I watched a short review on the retail version and thought it was good enough for me and bought it.

Now after having seen the pre-release recordings I can understand that some people would like this quality back but for me it is absolutely irrelevant.
My first exposure to the game was in it's current form and I liked it that way, I enjoyed it on PS3 and will now switch over to PC to get an even better experience.

I think this also shows bad hitboxes.
Spoiler.

The problem here is more that this move requires the player to be in a specific position to playback the animation, thus the player rubberbands back in position.

If I hadn't seen the mansion and FoFG areas in the reveal footage, I wouldn't have known that the final version was downgraded either.

Yeah, it seems people are thinking that From was advertising a version of the game that didn't exist until the last seond. They probably missed that one screenshot thread where every 3rd post was talking about how ugly the game looked. It doesn't help that journalists were using old footage and those screenshots popped up on Steam for a bit.

I still don't know what screenshots on the retail box people are talking about that's supposed to be from an old version of the game. On the CE, there's two very small screenshots that barely show anything. Don't recall either of them showing off the scrapped lighting.

Edit: actually didn't know those screens were on the dark souls 2 official site :p

So, you decide whether to play a souls games based on graphics?

I decide to buy a game depending on it's price and features. If it's a good game, it will remain being so when it costs $2.50.

If you disregard the resolution, the textures, the SSAO, the AF, the shadows. Which is actually what they promised.
All of that is nice but the textures look almost completely the same. Applying DSFix had the same effect as we're seeing in those comparisons without needing to upgrade texture resolution.

Well, the most convincing argument for the disproportionate outrage which I've seen so far is that they were showing off their vertical slice build too recently. Which honestly seems like a flimsy reason to lose your shit.

As in, today.

When we are talking about a company that isn't experienced with PC versions I think its fine. You guys are making a big fuss over it and then complain when some games are not brought over to PC when you guys behave like this. This behavior does not encourage developers at all to continue their PC efforts or port games over PC.
They had years to catch up. If they're going to release a product with substandard production values they should price it accordingly.

Changed their minds. Held back by old tech, so everything suffered. Wait till DS3.
Lied to the public. Are technologically incompetent.

Actually looks really nice. Shame that human characters are turned hollow in the PC port, though. ;)

They should never have shown the original version, straight up. It's a massive downgrade that happened here. Way worse than Watch Dogs IMO. The game's ugly now no matter which way you cut it, but thankfully it has enough going for it in other areas to make that a non-issue.

this thread is about comparing the PC release to the console version of the game. not the continual regurgitation of old screenshots and #YOULIED nonsense. please stop.

Read all my posts please

Then you would know what my actual position is

Was just posting the screenshot timeline for reference dude

well, there's a lot of folks that game on integrated gpus so im not too sure about that.

Hopefully none of these folks are the ones that go to other threads and complain that consoles are holding PC games back.

There is no reason why the game should not be able to scale down to the specs much like it is mentioned to be doing now no?

Would always be nice. But I'm not surprised most companies don't put in the resources for something the vast majority of players won't take advantage of.

Not a tech wiz myself but i do know for a fact that basic support for the majority of resolutions and an uncapped framerate doesn't take much if any effort or resources, to not have it screams incompetence but it's From so not suprised if this doesn't have it.

That's the whole point of graphics options though.

fair enough, but the lighting engine may or may not increased the baseline requirements. disabling it entirely via pc options might have been difficult to implement for whatever reason. i figure we can only safely assume so much.

You can tell the game was built for the original lightning engine. The flat lighting just throws the worse elements of the design into sharp relief. A real shame.

That's kind of a silly thing to say. It isn't without precedent for PC ports to have extra visual flair, including fairly big changes like PhysX support that make the overall game look very different.

There haven't been any PhysX additions in any port I've seen that are on the same scale as a complete room-by-room manual lighting overhaul.

Actually isn't that image the legit PC version? Some screens on the media page are representative (I think), some aren't.

Naw.

Pretty sure they are Vertical slice assets. Which were most definitely used for Marketing along with the TGS demo (Despite Screens coming out during TGS that were accurate to the ACTUAL game)

I guess the false advertising claims were certainly justified... or at least it was incompetent advertising
