Dark Souls II - Graphics Comparison - PC Preview

Man that's a bit depressing, frame rate and a little sharper on the PC

I expected more.

people really had no business expecting more

there's never more, sometimes like physx or some directx11 crap but that's usually it

hoping is another thing tho :P

Yup, just framerate and resolution. I'm eager to see what Durante has to say about what he has experienced.

haven't dipped yet. Ignored almost everything about this game in fear of it being spoiled. It's got to be worth getting if you're not already playing on ps box?

Dammit Nito stop changing your avatar so much. You should be condemned to have a Nito avatar forever. You chose your fate.

Nito is a fashion icon.

In other news the OT will be Dark Souls II (PC)|OT| Give us smooth! give us silky!

I see tons of love for that one so why not please the masses?

Im not a graphics whore. I just wanna play this jame, so good, give me now sweet dark souls 2 tasty juice, invade some modafukas and take their virginity and laugh a lot. That's gonna be sweet, but people have to complain because they are bitch, you know what happens to bitch? Bitch get slapped. No reason to be bitch, life is short, dark souls 2 is shorter, enjoy it while it last. Peace out.

This! So much complaining over one of the best games this year. I hope the PC crowd embrace this fantastic game. Ps4 version next!

They had to have spent extra resources on redesigning those areas.
Not really, because what it actually looks like is that they've reverted the levels back to the previous phase of level design, the one without the polish pass (add extra geometry, assetts, tune the lighting) and that's why it looks like crap. It's also quite an efficient job to do if they've properly versioned the levels thus reinforcing the idea of a fast downgrade because they couldn't get lighting working properly. It's also the main reason why we aren't seeing the upgrades in the PC version.

And yet, the TGS demos didn't run poorly, so what we were shown wasn't the actual game, but a tech demo. They should have just shown the real game from the beginning, like they did with DeS and DaS.
As mentioned before it's simply because of how demos work (you can't show a final game when it's not even near final, but have to estimate and hack your way to representation of the final game). DeS and DaS trade show demos were hardly any different from a development perspective, but they managed to realize that target (the engine was probably also quite a bit further in development so that it was easier to estimate the final level of detail). Studios like From don't have the manpower neither the money to actually make a completely separate demo which would also be an extremely stupid business decision as it costs money yet the quality of preview material has less effect on the sales as you might imagine. They simply aimed high, but failed to deliver and then screwed up parts of the marketing.

If you like be invaded you have to wait NG+

I wish I was allowed to talk right now and irrefutably demonstrate just how ridiculous the idea that DS2 PC assets aren't improved over their console counterparts is.

How it's possible you're playing the game? They needed this month and half to polish the game. It's too early!!!!

I wonder if PC fixes the weird draw distance(?) issues the game has.

Put the interrogation there cause I don't know if the issue is draw distance; sometimes you will move the camera, and a character that was occluded by a wall should be visible as the camera rotates, but it will only become really visible after a second. This happens with tons of little things.

that such a minor difference in resolution
All those screenshots did was further highlight that the textures are nigh-on identical between all platforms, so ignoring the other meaningful PC benefits like a smoother framerate, statements like "looks like the PS3 version" aren't actually far off yeah.

Ooh letting Durante get first dibs is an excellent move. Well deserved and tells me that From Soft and Banco really care.

Good good!

Seems to me like a marketing strategy to stabilize the PC port drama rather than them being just generous.

The PC version is an uncapped port. It inherits the issues already present in consoles. In that 1 hour Quick Look I could detect objects and enemies popping in, the same shitty textures (just upped in resolution) and the animations remain exactly the same.

However, I didn't notice any menu lag at all so I pretty much suppose that has been fixed. I can only hope that the audio lag is completely gone from the game as well. Fingers crossed for the input lag

There were 3 things that made the game unplayable for me on the PS3 and those are either gone or reduced to a minimum on PC: Loading times, menu/audio lag and the infamous input lag. The other stuff was irrelevant compared to those 3 main offenders.

All in all, the PC version is definitely the only way to go. People with capable rigs shouldn't even bother with consoles once this version gets released.

Content wise it is exactly the same game. It was just uncapped, but geometry and textures remain the same.

The menu being unresponsive seems to have been remedied now with the most recent patch / calibrations from yesterday, so I'd wager those same changes were implemented on PC. Inventory images still take a little while to load up occasionally (albeit not as long as before), but that probably won't be an issue with the port. Audio lag apparently only occurs with the digital versions of the game on consoles though, since I (and several others in the OT) with the disc version rarely if ever ran into that issue. During my NG and NG+ playthrough for instance, it only really happened during exceptionally laggy co-op sessions after I got summoned. Haven't noticed any gameplay-related input lag in the typical sense either: there's admittedly some delay to certain commands, but all of it is intentional from what I gathered. Not being able to run until your stamina bar is completely refilled after depleting it, weapon switching / rolling / etc. taking a while until another animation of yours has finished for balance reasons (which was also the case in Dark Souls 1), your guard being soft-broken with an impactful blow near you (even if said attack doesn't hit you per sé) and so forth are all done on purpose, for better or for worse.

This PC version doesn't have an online-only requirement, does it? My connection lately has been terrible (keeps dropping every fifteen minutes or so) and if this doesn't get resolved soon, I may choose to play offline until it is. I'm guessing I'll get thrown out of the game every time that happens and I'd rather just play normally.
If you lose your connection, you don't get booted back to the main menu anymore à la Dark Souls 1. You'll receive a message that notifies you of your Internet having dropped, but you'll still be able to continue playing uninterrupted albeit without some online functionalities. You do need to exit the game to re-enable these, on the other hand.

Maybe someone else can confirm this too, since I'm not 100% sure on this.

Yeah that's how it works on consoles, but I'm curious if they added a menu setting to play offline for the PC release.

On consoles (and in DkS1 for PC as well) playing offline was done by just not logging into your PSN/XBL/GFWL account and starting the game. Playing the game over Steam, this won't be possible. I hope I don't have to unplug my internet/use Steam offline to force the game into offline mode on PC.

Some people just like to play offline and it's crucial for speedruns as well.

Admittedly, the shots are compressed, having been taken from a video. Durante's gif (previous page) seems to showcase the differences better.

I dunno, it might not seem impressive to some people, but for me, the PC version is far and away easier on the eyes.

While I'm disappointed in the lighting I remain hopeful that the reduced system reqs will allow me and my 760 to enjoy a bit of supersampling for once.

With normal video compression layered on top, that comparison is nearly useless for showing a genuine difference.

Now this looks interesting...

If only we could get Durante to tease us with a screenshot or something, wondering what kind of stuff he unearthed from within the game, the shader stuff, etc... Gotta love those X-Files-like mysteries.

Either way, April 25th isn't that far off. Pre-ordered from Nuuvem, I assume the keys will be delivered that same day or the next, right?

Ok, so according to the Dark Looks video, they are using the Autodesk Beast lighting system. Would knowing that give some insight to the inner workings of the lighting? It looks like a lot of UE3 games used the same tool.

Legendary.

Beast is used to generate lightmaps, which isn't directly related to the dynamic lighting that everyone is concerned about.

I don't think I've seen this video posted yet? Interviews with some of from talking about the games direction and some technical stuff.

Dark Looks

It's interesting that he mentions Morpheme enhancing the motion blending while many animations in game have no transitions between them. A problem that never occurred in DS1.

And yes, they're using pre-downgrade footage from 4:11 to 4:29. They also use footage from the network test.

Also lol @ the subs. Havok Cloth = Hamukcross. Cloth simulation = Cross simulation xDDD.

It's for lightmapping. One of the key downgraded aspects of the game.

OT title material

So I read like 10-15 assorted pages of this thread and can't for the life of me figure out why some people are finding this port downright offensive. I feel like I'm missing something here since I for one am incredibly hyped.

This gif made me notice the geometry in the background is different between versions.

Maybe there's hope?

60 FPS and 1080p is amazing for me. Can NOT wait for this game...need it in my veins.
