Dark Souls III - PC Performance article

Biggest disappointment for me is the lack of Steam Cloud support. As someone who jumps between a desktop and laptop pretty regularly constantly transferring save files is going to be a major pain :(

Really? Anyone know if the game at least has VAC? No idea if these two things are even remotely related though lol

40fps with a 980, no wonder the console's can't hold 30fps. I have absolutely no faith in From Software when it comes to performance so I doubt it'll ever be fixed, like the frame time issues that were ignored. I guess I'd drop into the 30s with a 970 and I'd rather burn my money than support shit like that, it's just not good enough.

I intend to play at 60 FPS no matter what in my GTX 970 + i7 2700k at 1080p. I hope there's an option that is taking the FPS down without looking that different.

edit - nvm lol

It's quite clear to see that the GPU is not the problem, one CPU core is being stressed while the others are doing next to nothing when the frames drop.

I would imagine that the poor console CPU is to blame for the poor performance more than the GPU.

The CPU core is still around 80%, not 99%, so that's not stressed or capped either.

That's just very odd.

"This is the only area in the game I can talk about that doesn't hold a steady 60 FPS for me."

Otherwise the 980 can get 40fps but at 4K! That particular area just seems abnormally CPU bound. From what I've seen, even a 950 will get 60fps at 1080p most of the time.

Would an i5 6500, and an Saudi strix gtx 960 4gb manage at around 60 fps (I don't mind it not being locked as long as minimum is hopefully above 40)

You're all set. If it doesn't run up to your standards, just make sure to spend less than 2 hours playing it and you can refund it guaranteed.

Has anyone been following the PC streamers to see about the game crashing or other bugs?

Hope that this version is stable at release. Excited to dive back in to some Souls.

Hmm CPU bound, my poor old i7 860 is going to struggle isn't it?

My older gaming PC is using an overclocked i5 750@4ghz and it almost never uses 100% of any of its cores for the majority of games that I play on it (most of which are console ports). Can't make any claims that Dark Souls 3 wouldn't make it bottleneck the GTX 780 that I have in it now, but it's very doubtful. If it does, then it sounds more like shitty optimization, and not so much an issue with the processor.

The difference in gaming performance between processors from 2009 and current is still pretty damn small aside from something like an RTS.

Yeah based on some reports there's some bad optimisation with the first core, so it stands to reason that if you do get bottlenecks it's going to be due to that.

Hopefully they patch or improve it.

I only play at 1080p so im quite confident in 60fps maxed

Crashed a lot for the giantbomb crew, even crashed live on their stream earlier

Yeah, saw it crash on the GB guys this morning and heard them say they've had issues with it, though oddly they said it seemed more stable playing as the Knight. I'm watching Max now and he crashed a few times in pretty short order playing as the Herald. He just restarted as the Knight, so I'm curious to see if it'll actually make a difference.

edit: Looks like the Knight does actually make a difference. Respawning at a particular bonfire as the Herald was causing a crash pretty reliably, but it's fine as the Knight so far. Weird. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So am I ok to run this decently or am I fucked?

I think we have the same laptop. I installed an extra 8 gig ram. I feel like we should be able to play at 30fps no prob, but that's just a feeling.
Sure hoping so, because I can't get internet at home. Laptop may be my only hope for playing online..

Shit, am I going to have issues with my fx8350 then? I optimally want to run this at 1440p variable max settings 60fps.

I have a sabertooth 990fx and 16gb ram

Asus R9 290

Yes, they buy the boxed copies in bulk from low tier regions and sell them for cheap. I bought games off them and got keys in time for preload.

Sweet. I always just buy from steam but got a nasty bill in the mail yesterday so gotta save where I can. Someone would propably tell me to not buy the game at this time and be responsible. Fuck those people.

I'm betting a GTX 970 will run the game max settings at 1080p at 60 FPS most of the time. The only exceptions being those areas where the CPU core utilisation takes the biggest toll.

You'll probably get 60 FPS most of the time as long as AMD's cards run the game as they should. A GTX 980 does 1080@60 with about 50% of the GPU being used.
Drops seem tied to the CPU (due to the game hammering one core instead of spreading the load)

Just use GameSave Manager, saves a lot of time.
