Dark Souls internal rendering resolution fix (DSfix)

Quick question...

How should I go about properly installing the new update over the old one? The readme suggests to delete the old fix, but doesn't specify exactly what to delete.

Or would copy and replace get the job done?

Just copy over anything in your DSFix texoveride folder to the new one. And delete DSFix from the DATA folder. Then just copy/cut/paste and replace everything else.

No, you can just connect the controller(s) using a USB cable. It's what I do (with 2 DS3s actually).

ive been trying since you posted the link, i have my ds3 found, the mionitor shows its charging and connected, the xinput controller test has all the buttons working. dark souls just doesnt see the controller. no idea if im doing something simple wrong. do i need to setup the controller through steam ?

Anyone have any recommendations for the AO options? I've been messing around with the settings, and the AO doesn't play nice with much of the grass. It's especially obvious at firelink shrine. Maybe I should keep everything at the lowest settings?

No, if it's recognized as an xinput controller and working everything should be fine. Can you disconnect it and see if you still have controllers listed? If so, remove them and reconnect.

If all else fails you could also try a reboot.

It sounds like you prefer a subtle AO effect. You could try either VSSAO or VSSAO2 with strength 1.

Thank you Durante for the update :)

Did you uninstall the drivers from motioninjoy as well? http://www.motioninjoy.com/wiki/en/help/uninstall#uninstall_the_ds3_tool_and_the_mij_driver_files
This was causing problems for me when I switched from motioninjoy.
Or maybe try to uninstall everything (motioninjoy, SCP and Xbox driver as well) reboot and install only the xbox and SCP driver again.
And look in the Device Manager if the gamepad is enabled. For some reason for me it was shown as connected but actually disabled and therefore didn't work in games.
Once it works there is no additional setup required through steam or Dark Souls itself.

Entirely GPU bound. Pretty much every single option in DSFix is, except for the framerate unlocking.

My SLI gpu scaling in DS is so strange. I still get like 60% GPU scaling even if I crank the resolution to 4k. The frame rate tanks even though my GPU utilization is really just mediocre.

:(

I guess I shall hope for good SLI or GPU scaling with the next game!

To my knowledge the game doesn't even utilize SLI. Otherwise I'd be doing the same with my Titans or 780's. Or at least it didn't seem to when I was watching my 690 SLI on my older 2500K rig.

I'm having a problem saving the game - whenever I start the game up (on steam), it says I'm not logged into Windows Live and it won't let me log in, or even bring up the Live screen either through the menu button or by pressing the gamepad windows-button.

ALSO, I'm having bad framerate issues, could it just be my laptop? I'm running it on a newer laptop with a Radeon card and plenty of memory.

Any ideas, GAF?

Just wanted to chime in with another thank you to Durante. You made buying this game on PC worthwhile and it looks pretty damn special all thanks to you. Do not miss the 360 version one bit.

Try going to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall GFWL and the marketplace, then download the latest version from Microsoft. Your GFWL client may simply be obsolete.

Win 8 or Win 7?

If Win 8 first try uninstalling amd imstalling it from the app store imstead. If that doesnt work or you are on Win 7 first try logging into GFWL BEFORE booting the game.

Finally if all else fails try this solution:

Games for Windows Live can be a pain to get running right but it is usually fine once you get it up and running the first time correctly.

I'm unfortunately running Win. 8. I should've mentioned, that before I posted this thread I did re-install GFWL, and I managed to log into it from the desktop screen, but for some reason it doesn't register any change within the game. I also verified the game cache and it re-installed GFWL during that 2 step initial configuration for the first time running the game. Still it didn't seem to matter.

On the framerate issue, I'm not certain but I'm afraid I might just have to play it on my desktop (which I didn't download the game to because it has a shitty interwebs connection).

When I installed GFWL on my buddy's version of Windows 8, I had to do the steps in that link. Then finally, after I restarted the game (after the time it was supposed to work), I got the "Enter your CD key screen." It was a huge pain in the ass, but once I got his GFWL working a few months ago, he has had no problem since.

I don't know why MS hates their own program so much. It is utterly ridiculious how shitty it is to get GFWL running properly on Win 8.

I installed DSfix 2.1 last week on my Window 7 PC. I noticed an improvement to resolution. However, I've noticed that in cutscenes that there's alot of color banding, as well as the sky and distant objects during gameplay which are kinda overblown and hazy (blooming I suppose). Is this normal?

Probably related to whatever changes broke ambient occlusion. Upgrading to 2.2 might fix those things, since it fixes AO.

make sure not to use 16bit color. use 32bit

Try posting a screenshot where it's noticeable.

so I just got a new PC and dark souls. just beaten the 2nd boss, game is incredible.

I'm currently using 1080p highest AA setting and unlocked fps and getting a stable 60 fps. which other options in the dsfix.ini should I turn on or raise higher to improve visual quality?

also I'm getting vertical lines if i look around fast. I put fps treshold up to 59, that helped quite a bit! is there a way to get rid of it completely?

I had the same issue, and I resolved it by adding Dark Souls (data.exe) to the Windows DEP exception list.

Right click Computer and select properties.
Click on Advanced System Settings.
Under the Advanced tab in the section called Performance click on the Settings button.
Select Data Execution Prevention tab.
Choose "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select."
Add Dark Souls to the list.

Hope this works for you too. And about the low fps problem, depending on your computer Dark Souls might not be working it hard enough resulting in low fps. Ironically, jacking up anti-aliasing (or something that will increase GPU or CPU load) can help kick your PC into gear a bit and run the game at a smoother, more consistent framerate. Give it a shot if nothing else works.
Just wanted to say "thanks" for this. It's helped me with my issues.

doesn't work. still getting awful tearing. I can even see a line running from bottom to top om the namco logo at the beginning. anything else I could try?

You could give borderless windowed a shot if you're not already.

Weird though - I thought tearing is usually horizontal and not vertical.

The Namco logo pretty much always has an ugly seam when you adjust the rendering resolution. That problem is unrelated to tearing. Just set skipIntro to 1 in dsfix.ini and you wont have to see it again.

ok, it seems sweet fx was the problem. unfortunately forcing vsync with d3doverrider didn't help. using nvidia inspector to force it within the driver solved the problem!

I apologize if this has been mentioned already but does the new update also address the bugged UI scaling when looking at the sun?

No, I've actually had reports that the UI scaling is more broken now (because of the game update). It's not something I actively develop anymore, the amount of effort required just isn't justified by the result IMHO.

I'll personally donate $5000 your way if you fix the UI scaling issues (sun/etc), as well as SweetFX presets being still a bit buggy since last update. Also, since your Durante, I'd like a custom SweetFX preset that mimics the color saturation, lightning and overall mood in the original Ignite teaser.

That might make the result a bit more justified.

There you go I kept it in proof for you Durante. Now make some money :P

I'm good for it bro, me and the roommate just sold a completely custom built Chevy Nova (only 1200 miles on it) and split the cash both ways. So I'm $45,000 richer. :)

Might do the same in a few months with a Dodge Charger we have.

Plus there's this, new customers require new parts. I have no problems spending big if I get what I want. http://i.imgur.com/xXl03gK.jpg Received parts for further proof. :) http://i.imgur.com/dIyU84U.jpg

Is it possible to change the button layout? I want to switch primary attack and heavy attack with each other. That's something that always irked me with the console version, attacking with RB just feels kinda wrong.

I just played the PS3 version to see how the community is holding up (got summoned every two minutes) since the PC version feels so empty, and holy crap the framerate is so noticeable now.

*bow* Durante *bow*

.. you bought two different videocards?

Durante, was it every ascertained what exactly this patch did?

Bioshock 2 received a small patch just before GFWL was removed, I wonder if they did something similar. I believe the Bioshock 2 patch just updated Redists.

The author of DSVfix added this to his mod page.
Please note: DSVfix is not required right now, as the latest patch does exactly what DSVfix used to, and probably more. It seems to be the 1.08 patch PS3 players got, which fixes stat draining, malicious warps and allows free level ups if you've been drained in the past.

I've still seen people complain about invaders with cursing weapons (apparently not possible without hacking?), but at least the stat draining is gone I guess. Mine was drained once, and I was also warped to Abyss from Undead Burg. That was fun.
Good thing I had enabled the save backups on DSfix. :)
