Dark Souls |OT5| Definitely better than the sequel

Still on my first ever playthrough of the PC edition.

Just beat the Gargoyles and decided to give the Darkroot Garden (I think that was the name) a whirl. I actually made it pretty far, to a boss, the moonlight butterfly.

Unfortunately it shredded me in seconds. The weird thing was, I actually found a summon sign outside of the room, and summoned "phantom witch beatrice", but the NPC did nothing except for following me. I tried moving her in front of the boss, but the NPC would not attack.

Is there any point to wasting humanity items, restoring my humanity, and trying again with the NPC, or should I say goodbye to those ~8k souls?

Thanks!

As others have said earlier in the thread, the NPC summons can either win the fight for you or do virtually nothing. It's a dice roll either way.

What I would say is if you want to take on the Butterfly again, either get very good at rolling or pickup the Crest shield back at the Undead Asylum, so you can block her magic.

You don't need the crest shield for moonlight. Have fast roll. And roll left and right on the portion of the walkway further from the boss endlessly until it comes down and you can attack. The shards will very rarely get you if you keep rolling on the far side.
You'll still take damage if you tank with the crest so I dont recommend it

So I was exploring Blighttown and stumbled upon the entrance that leads to the Valley of Drakes. Walking along the cliff side, I saw some loot up ahead in between some craggy rocks. As I got closer though, I realized that those craggy rocks weren't rocks at all and instead made up the skeletal remains of a fucking dragon. Figured loot stuck between a giant dragon corpse must be valuable, right? With my guard down, I worked myself in between the dragons claw and head to retrieve the loot. Then it's head moved. Turns out this dragon wasn't dead at all; just taking a nap.

Suffice to say I did not survive my encounter with the giant slumbering skeletal dragon.

It's not removing difficulty, I'd argue that it's removing tedium.

If I can't beat an area boss after 10 tries but I can run through its 12 enemies w/o trouble - why keep fighting them?

I need to learn the boss and its tactics, not the grunters. It's not adding challenge, it's adding fluff.

You don't need to despawn the enemies, just run by them if your only doing boss runs.

I just killed Nito. Not a hard fight, I think getting to him is actually harder than fighting him.

Overall I'd say Catacombs/Tomb of the Giants have been both pretty shitty. Thankfully the bosses were easy, otherwise it would have been too much.

Did you find the ring that increase the enemies souls and Leeroy phantom?

Hey guys -- I've got a problem with my NG+. I can't seem to stay on bonfires for more than 30s~, I'll get kicked off the menu and it won't let me use it again unless I quit and reload. Is this a bug or a NG+ thing?? It's messing up my farming in Londo!

^ People are trying to invade you.

No. Fuck.
Look around for the ring, it's a loot item so you should still be able to see it.

Rough location:
Near the second bonfire

Not so rough location:
The archer above the second bonfire, there is a corpse on the ledge where he stands, roll/jump off there, the ring is along this path, with an ambush of those weird skeleton totem enemies.

It means somebody is trying to invade you. Going hollow or playing in offline mode should stop that for you.

Holy crap that Gwyn boss fight is tough, he completely destroys me every time. I think I've only managed to get his heath down down to 70%

He can
be parried. It's tricky at first, but once you figure it out he's not too hard. Try practicing parrying on the Black Knight's on the way to the fight. His two handed swings are the easiest to parry.

Also, make sure to use the pillars in the room to your advantage. Put one between him and you when you want to heal.

Yeah I'll try using the pillars next, I haven't really mastered parrying at all since I've been using Greatshield of Artorias in most of the boss fights but I'll practice some.

Almost caught up to my last play through. Beat the rat, gaping dragon, Quelaag, Ceaseless Discharge and Iron Golem. Just about got to S & O, really hated that fight but haven't been having that much trouble so far.

Took the shortcut to Blight Town, now I'm not sure where to go. Crossed the short root bridge, went up two (?) ladders and can't find where to go next. Framerate doesn't help either :/

You've got to go down the lift to get to the marsh at the bottom.

You have to cross the swamp and head towards that giant mound with spikes jutting out of it. There's an entrance there guarded by three fatties. You can either fight them or bypass them by going around. Once your through, there's a boss fight almost immediately after so come prepared.

Welp, I officially don't know what to do next. I got to a point where every place I haven't explored is full of enemies that are way too strong for me.

Tried the Darkroot Garden, got destroyed by the cats or the knights.

Tried New Londo and got destroyed either by the ghosts, or got to a light gate that takes you inside a tower with some stairs that go nowhere.

Tried Demon Ruins, there's fucking Capra Demons as regular enemies.

Tried the Land of Drakes, the titular drakes kicked my ass.

I feel stuck.

Valley of Drakes is basically a transit zone with a bit of loot.

Demon Ruins and Lost Izalith suck, so you might as well get that over with so the game doesn't end on a poor note. Don't be worried, Capra Demons aren't that bad. You can lure one demon at a time with a bow if you're worried about fighting a bunch at once.

Do Darkroot Garden before New Londo and beat the boss there. You'll see why, it'll explain the whole weird stairs to nowhere thing. Get the crest from Andre if you haven't already and try backstabbing the knights, that route's much shorter than the one with the cats.

If you have the DLC (Or the PC version), save that for last. It's incredible.

Dat shoutout to a certain character in Dark Souls in the newest GoT.

You'll know it when you see it

That was my EXACT first thought as well!

Game of Thrones S04E09 spoiler:
I saw him pull back on that bow and I nearly jumped out of my chair. 100% Gough badassery. Probably just a coincidence, but it was amazing nonetheless.

If you've beaten O & S, you have 5 options. Duke's Archives, the Catacombs/Tomb of the Giants, Demon ruins/Lost Izalith, New Londo Ruins, or the dlc. I'd honestly save the dlc for last since its for higher level or more skilled players but you can tackle any of the areas as you see fit. Also what weapons are you using? Maybe you haven't upgraded them in a while. I usually have at least one weapon at +15 by the time I get to O & S, so you may want to do a little grinding to get souls or upgrade materials so you can max out your weapons.

Hey guys, just started Sen's Fortress last night. About the last ember for +15 normal weapons, where can that be gotten at?

EDIT: One other thing, how can I increase the damage on my longsword further than that or is +15 good enough for the rest of the game. Looking at some upgrade paths and it seems that a crystal longsword has increased base damage even though it scales the same according to the wiki.

The very large ember is in
New Londo Ruins
but you can't reach it until you have
drained the water
, which you do by either
Speaking to Ingward once you have the Lord Vessel, or killing him

+15 is the highest weapon upgrade, to increase damage output further you level up the stats that your weapon scales with. iirc the longsword is a quality weapon meaning it scales with STR and DEX, so level up those - the stat bonus is the + number value on the detailed weapon stats page.

Crystal weapons have higher damage, but they cannot be repaired.

Would anyone around level 86 on the PS3 version be willing to help me cut off Seath's tail? At the fog gate right now.

Edit: Scratch that, I'm out of humanity now.

Gaping Dragon was an impressive sight! But thankfully seemed to be a pushover, so I don't have to look at him (or her) again. Only when it spewed was I caught offguard.

Unlocked Blighttown but have held off for now. I want to take my Claymore beyond +5, so heading back to Andre. Can someone confirm? I get Andre to take me from +5 to +6 with the ember? I can then get up to +10 from any bonfire with my weapon smithbox? I only have enough shards on hand to get to +8 I think. I'll get the rest I need from the slimes on the way back to Blighttown.

But before doing that, I went back to the Asylum, to get the Rusted Iron Ring. I've been playing with a lot of rolling so want to maintain that in the wet areas. Got what I need there, just want to dispatch the Stray Demon first, it has gotten the best of me a few times lol.

Final ember is in New Londo Ruins. You can make a crystal weapon but not before getting the ember for it which is in Duke's Archives but I honestly don't recommend it. You can't repair crystal weapons so once their broken, they are useless. Just get your longsword to +15 and put points into str and dex since its a quality weapon. You could use a buff on in (like resins) if your looking for more damage which the longsword is great for and yes the game can be beaten with the longsword. Its a good weapon.

Was going to say I had a level 74 in Dukes Archives I believe and I could help you out. Go farm the Pisacas ( the blue enemies after you get out of the prison) since they can drop humanity and try to summon again.

Some decent progress today:
Killed:
- moonlight butterfly (easy after I stripped down to below 25%)
- capra demon (nearly killed me, or well his dogs did, but I managed to kill him first try)
- gaping dragon (also first try, but I had half an inch of HP left and no estus. Was too greedy)
- Stray Demon (gave me enormous troubles, until I learned to pace myself, then I killed him without him landing a single hit).

Think it's time for blighttown now.

I'm suffering from the 'post-Lord Vessel blues' problem.

I'll do a build I enjoy, get to the Lord Vessel and do Lost Izalith/Bed of Chaos as well, then lose interest because I hate the Catacombs, Tomb of the Giants and Duke's Archives.

You can get that ember at any point in the game. I usually pick it up when I'm on my way back to firelink after blighttown. It's fairly well hidden so you'll definitely have to explore a bit to find it.
