Darkest Dungeon | “The Road” of dungeon crawlers, on Kickstarter, GAFfer-made

The art style reminds me of John Blanche's in some way. Really awesome stuff.

May not be able to back due to tight money concerns at the moment, but you will have an assured buy when it comes out!

They hit $225k today. Definitely has slowed down, but still pretty good response for a somewhat niche market game (permadeath, etc).

its expected, Usally most donations come from the beginning of the campaign and the end. Middle is usually the lowest amount.

(Finally) Paycheck recieved, Darkest Dungeons funded.

Warrants pseudorandomness?, too many misses can make the gameplay a bit boring.

Edit
May be 'Stress damage' can be coupled with hit chances; more stressful the character goes, chances to hit will increase slightly.

"If you give something to the player, they won't question it and they'll believe it was because of their clever strategy. If something bad happens to the player, the game is broken and something is wrong."

Oh God.

Our PayPal pledges are now above $2,000, which means the project has exceeded the $250,000 stretch goal!

Battle-weary or proudly triumphant, each time that you return to town after a quest, there is a chance that a Town Event can happen. There are a wide variety of events, with a mixture of positive and negative consequences.
ae384f48c619fd28feab9b8a316c4796_large.jpg

Most of the time, even bad events will have an upside. Mostly.

Examples of other events:
  • Alcohol Shortage! A missed shipment of hops leaves the town dry. Stressed heroes will have to rely on other activities to bring them back down to earth.
  • Heat Wave! Increased chance of ABUSIVE afflictions on the next expedition. This could be good or bad...
  • Rumors of a Huge Bounty! Increased chance of recruiting Bounty Hunters while the rumor persists.
  • The First One's Free! The Nomad is having a sale on trinket purchases.
  • Missing Cargo Ship! A ship overflowing with treasures and supplies has gone missing near the Cove. Perhaps a quest to that dungeon will be more lucrative than usual.
  • And more!
Town Events will add flavor to the Hamlet experience, but they also will present you with interesting choices that may alter your plans.

The Ruined Estate - The World of Darkest Dungeon
93261e9481143165ee138d036b48bfab_large.jpg

  • The Weald: A massive forest surrounds the Hamlet on the landward side. Dark and virtually impenetrable, it's twisted branches choke the remains of a massive cemetery. Deep in the heart of the wood, hideous fungal spores have taken hold, fuelled by whatever malignancy lies restlessly below the Manor. You'll face barbarous raiders, hags, wild animals, and even a coven of powerful witches. Ambushes are frequent, and the poisoned ground does not yield much edible food.
  • The Ruins: The battlements and towers that once surrounded the Manor have long since crumbled, and rumours suggest that necromancers and alchemists of all kinds have flocked to the site, attracted by the powerful emanations from below. The skeletal remains of your family's royal guard shuffle the halls in droves, driven by a lust for battle and death. The structure has become increasingly unstable, and the resulting cave-ins require both pickaxe and rope to circumvent.
  • The Warrens: These ancient aqueducts run beneath the entire estate, and pre-date even the earliest settlers to the region. Teeming with sewage run-off, disease, and all manner of noxious fumes, the Warrens are now home to a bizarre cult. Whispers of blood rituals, summoning circles and even hybrid offspring of unknown origin keep all but the most valiant (and foolhardy) away from the endlessly winding tunnels. Food spoilage is common, and disease is rampant, so prepare accordingly.
  • The Cove: At the very edge of reason and sanity, there is a fissure in the sheer cliff face facing the open sea. These salt-soaked caves bear the markings of architecture that is distinctly not of human origin. The increased number of shipwrecks in recent years suggest that whatever amphibious race of horrors that once occupied the region has returned, perhaps compelled by the maddeningly regular seismic activity originating below the Manor. Terrifying engravings exhumed from the area depict grotesque fish-like abominations engaged in some kind of sacrifice to a thing too terrible to describe.
  • The Darkest Dungeon: Even the boldest and drunkest of tavern boasters speaks nothing of the horrors that might exist deep, deep below the ruins. All dwellers in the Estate lands know exactly where the entrance to the Darkest Dungeon lies--it is where the Ancestor dug and uncovered that foul portal. But none have ventured there and returned to cast light or knowledge upon what might lie within.

Town events idea is a simple but really good idea.
To many Rpg/game forgot to bring life to the cities that we spend hours in them.
So far, I only saw Mmorpg trying to do some events but not directly to the towns.

I wonder if our choices will have some consequences in the game so we might that way unlock quests for example.

Yes the most important goal was reached. If only the mod goal wasnt a pipedream (I'd also like those sweet cinematics)

That's a very good point. I'm guessing its usually this way due to time/resources constraints, but also just that it might not be that important in comparison to the full game (ex: the limited number of lines for npc's in skyrim).

Update #14 is out! Final 36 Hours!

New stretch goals

  • $285k mini-goal: The Ancestor's Items - 6 rare and powerful trinkets dropped from the expedition of your Ancestor in which he uncovered the Darkest Dungeon, to his eventual demise. You can find these powerful and mysterious items while adventuring.
  • $350k MEGA-GOAL: Steam Workshop support has been reduced from $400k and has been added to the $350k Cinematics goal, creating a monstrous, lumbering MEGAGOAL- ZOMG! Why choose chocolate or peanut butter when you can have both?!

Grave Robber Revealed!

WallPaper_GraveRobber.jpg

Nimble, versatile and self-sufficient, the Grave Robber sparkles with value like a gold ring on the finger of a fresh corpse!
She's able to deftly evade incoming hits and make lethal use of her poisoned daggers at range or in close quarters.
The Grave Robber's real speciality however, is navigating long-forgotten tunnels silently, disarming traps,
seeking out hidden passageways and uncovering ancient caches of valuable treasure!

I admire their spirit and guts, but not sure combining the goals is the right move.

I think it is!
Mods are great for Steam release and cinematics for game immersion.

I hope people will respond to them!! :D

Thoughn I think it should've been put on Greenlight to to help reach a larger public.

I was going to back this game until I saw that bit about the exclusive Kickstarter class at the $50 tier. Leave that garbage to the EAs of the world.

To be fair, they later recognized it was a mistake but couldn't change the reward after the Kickstarter launch.

I've seen other Kickstarters handle similar issues by providing the reward to everyone and creating a new tier to explain the change to prospective backers. They apologized to people who backed at the higher level and attempted to create a comparable out-of-game bonus.

The thing is, that route gets around the letter of the Kickstarter policy, but not the spirit of it. Just because you offer an alternative reward at that pledge level doesn't get you off the hook for the original reward (the reward being exclusivity of the class just as much as its inclusion), because those representations were made in good faith those who backed at that level before the change.

350k stretchgoal seems a bit too far away... maybe they'll reach it in the longer run if they allow people to keep backing through Paypal or something

So long as the change is made well before the campaign ends and everyone is notified via backer update, I'm 100% OK with a change like that. Disappointing the few people interested in manufactured exclusivity at the expense of everyone else's enjoyment is a small price to pay.

If you absolutely must have exclusive in-game rewards, make sure they're purely cosmetic.

Never heard of this. Now investigating thanks to the bump!

Damn they got Stuart Chatwood for the music. He's done some stuff.

Decided to back this at the last moment. Almost want to go Adventurer tier but eh, trying to hold on to my money.

Excited to see how this turns out.

Yes, because having an incentive for some people to fund more is exactly the same as overpriced DLC for a finished product.

@epmode : you don't know how to forgive someone who said he was sorry, do you ? They aplogized a lot of time even in an article on Gamasutra. Also, they did not made a "change" like you suggested probably because they didn't wanted to offend the backers who backed for that reward (you didn't read the comments of they kickstarter, did you ?).

So all they could do is to apologize to people.

Congrats to Red Hook Studios, Darkest Dungeon's KS campaign has successfully ended at $313k!
