Darkest Dungeon | “The Road” of dungeon crawlers, on Kickstarter, GAFfer-made

My intention wasn't to push only for hype in this thread but to point out that the developers are actively considering the feedbacks they have received;
there have been already adjustments, even before the campaign launched, here and there based on the fans' reactions. I reckon the exclusive class is
a more delicate situation to "defuse" – they're aware of it.

But, yeah, I see your point, it's a topic that has been firing up here and in the KS comments.

On topic, we're $5k away from the next stretch goal ($150k). I presume that it will be a somewhat safe sail to the $200k goal, at least. Which is great :)

It also seems that tomorrow, Friday, we'll get a feature of the existing confirmed characters.

I see this campaign easily hitting $1m, maybe $1.2m.

Update #3 is available.

Additional Town activities

  • We're committing to a third activity in the Abbey (FLAGELLATION) and also a third activity in the Tavern (BROTHEL). Hey - who are we to say what floats a hero's boat and reduces their stress level?

  • We're separating the Camping Skill trainer from the Combat Skill trainer. We had grouped these together for efficiency, but now we can draw a bit more and implement them separately! Better looking town!

  • AND, we're adding a building that we have really been wanting to do but had on the Wish/DLC list: the NOMAD'S WAGON. The Nomad's Wagon is a shop where special equippable trinkets can be purchased. Some of these trinkets can be found through adventuring, but why trust luck when you can slip a few (hundred or thousand) gold pieces to the crafty Nomad and get it now?

Exclusive Class Update
It is best to read it on the update.

I see this campaign easily hitting $1m, maybe $1.2m.
I don't think it will make it past $450'000. I think it will lose momentum around $200-250k and have a spike on the last days.
I believe $1m would be more damaging than anything.

Their response to the exclusive class is reasonable. They made a mistake and recognized it, the angry people in the comments shouldn't be so butthurt about the exclusive class. If they want to have this exclusive class, they should just pay for it. It's not like the devs added it afterwards. If they don't want to pay the set price for a product ("game with a half class more") they don't get it.

If anything, they should have compromised, and let backers from lower levels pledge an additional amount to get the extra class tacked on to their pledge level, like what was done with Armikrog. That way the class is still exclusive to kickstarter, they get more funding, and no one has any real reason to complain.

But it isn't reasonable for people to not want to support the game because this is a continuation of disgusting practices done by large publishers, the sort of things that people go to Kickstarter to avoid? I was ready to back this game at a high tier until I got to the exclusive class, when I closed the window and decided this is no longer a project I want to support. It went from "This looks amazing, I want to help this happen" to a game that I'll get when it hits a deep discount some time down the line.

That's seem like...kind of an excessive response. So because of something like that, all excitement, interest about the game, uniqueness of the gameplay, visuals, and mechanics...just gone? Because some people will have access to a slight variant of an existing class, a variant that they paid for?

I'm okay with it. I don't like to generalize so I won't put Red Hook Studios in the same pot as the large publishers. I treat them as different scenarios because they're different realities.
About the practice: my justification is that they made it in good faith. You could say it's pretty poor because it's based on trust, which is always very fleeting,
but the developers need(ed) the money to fund the game and not to hit millions of sales or milk a fanbase. They have explained why they choosed, in hindsight poorly they admitted, to do so.

Of course, the KS had a huge success that skyrocketed the amount of gathered money to 200% of the base goal. The game has been funded immediately so it's extra money;
extra money that will probably make the game a full or better experience, instead of a base experience.

So I'm okay with it, we get a better game out of it. Everybody wins.
There will be players that won't have access to 1 of the, at this point,15 character classes? I believe they will enjoy Darkest Dungeon anyway,
with all the features the backers will unlock to make the title a better or, perhaps, a full experience.

I understand that there're people that are against the practice; I'm not completely certain about the polarisation of this argument in the case of this context.
I mean, the practice has a negative connotation because large publishers exploit it to to have a pre-order content that is something cut from the core content.

The exclusive class is meant to be a reward that is going to be exclusively paid to be produced by the adventurer / patron / etc. pledgers. It's not even detailed as of now, it's just a label.
It's not even the argument "it's something cut from the core content" or "they're milking their fans!".

Nevertheless, there're people that are against this business practice so they'll apply their principle in an almost blind way to everything?
Ok, I'm just provoking now. To put things back in context, it's a KS campaign. Support if you feel like it, do not if you aren't convinced. Easy peasy.
Lemon squeezy.

People go to Kickstarter to get funded. Unfortunately, exclusives have always been one of those way to get funded, KS or publisher.

Yes, because of that. Because I don't want to support that sort of business and I won't. There are plenty of great games out there, I don't have to play every one that looks interesting, and I damned sure don't have to buy the ones that are continuing business practices I feel are terrible for gaming. They're asking me to support what they are doing before a product exists by creating a Kickstarter, and my answer is firmly "No" when they lock away gameplay content to a preorder.

To be entirely honest, this is worse than the big publisher examples. I can't think of a single time that a large release game had gameplay relevant pre-order DLC that was impossible to buy after release.

Really like the art style. The trailers helped sell me on it. Given I'm 50+ games deep in my Steam backlog, I'll wait for it to hit there and go on sale.

Nah, I firmly believe it will blow through every stretch goal.

Again, you're projecting the significance of the exclusive class.

From the update:
"The class was conceived as a cool variant on an existing archetype and something that backers could have a voice in selecting."

To me, that just sounds like it's a variant on a pre-existing class. If that is the case, could they have explained better? Yes. But hardly game changing.

It's gameplay content that's locked away to preorders. That is all the significance that I need to determine that it's not something I have any interest in supporting. I'm not saying you need to retract your pledge, or suggesting that anybody else doesn't back it for this reason. This is why I'm not backing it, and that will not change.

Hey guys,

It's totally reasonable for Archaix to not back us because of this exclusive class thing. It was a mistake on our part. That's one of the reasons we decided on leaving things as is.

Best to own up to it and take in on the chin rather than try and figure out some convoluted scheme to wriggle our way out of responsibility for our fuckup.

Since you're here and understanding anyway, I do want to say that I am glad you're keeping your word on it. I'm not backing the game but it still looks amazing and hope it's a huge success in development and once it gets released. As silly as it may sound to some people though, I refuse to be part of a statistic that says Kickstarters that include these sort of bonuses are X% more likely to be successful. Too many people complain about everything they hate in gaming today and do nothing about it. Glad you realize it's nothing personal.

So are we going to learn about the 8 major afflictions? Also I'd be interested to know how many ways characters might have to cope. So far we have heard about carousing (possibly broken down into hitting the bottle and I assume sex would be another), praying or religious meditation, and just resting and time. Are these things that will always work and do they have a chance of failing and maybe causing then to despair more? And are those just examples you are telling people about right now and there is more variety?

Just fantastic art design! This could be the first game I ever back on ks. Just looks absolutely gorgeous...

Can't wait to see the deep down dark monster design!

Ok - so this mix of art, dungeon crawling, roguelike finally convinced me toback something on kickstarter

Really looking forward to getting a key at some point in the future now

I don't do kickstarters as a rule, but I will buy on Steam once it is released. I'm glad this got funded.

I loved the trailer. For some reason I'm getting an MTV Oddities vibe.

New Heroes Unlocked: BRAINS & BRAWN!
Thanks to all of your incredible support, we've unlocked two new classes! We can't believe we're here after only 5 full days of the campaign!

OCCULTIST
Some have always felt the twinge of knowledge just out of sight, and mysteries beyond what the uneducated eye can see. The Occultist has made a career of studying arcane, black arts. No text is too weird; no base carving too inscrutable, and no gnawed bone too insignificant for the Occultist. His devotion to powers inhuman and energies cosmic have given him...disturbing...abilities to employ both in combat and around the campfire.

MAN-AT-ARMS
A veteran steeled by many a campaign, he's a tough all-around fighter. Attack, defence, versatility--he knows his way around a battle, with few weaknesses. Accordingly, he can anchor any party. His dedication to a lifetime of martial arts means he can spend time while camping to prepare himself for optimal performance in the upcoming fights. Nobody is better prepared than a professional soldier.

Additional Quest Types
We have a ton of ideas for different core quest types, and haven't down-selected which particular ones will be in the game yet. But by achieving this stretch goal, that means we now will move MORE of those types into the production schedule when that time comes. This means MORE game and MORE replayability. Your support as backers is having a permanent effect in how this game is developed.

HELLION
In case you missed it yesterday, we also unveiled the HELLION! She's a savage but skilled warrior who fights better the bloodier things get.

They're also looking for people who can translate and subtitle their trailers
Do you have Camping Skills that include "Know Another Language" or "Video Editor"? If so, we'd love your help!

Here is a link is for a PDF that has the trailer scripts (dialogue only):
http://www.redhookgames.com/media/DarkestDungeon_TrailerScripts.pdf

We know Darkest Dungeon already has fans who speak other languages, but we also know there are even more potential fans out there.

Feel free to take these scripts, translate and subtitle our videos, and spread them around! Just make sure to credit us (videos Copyright Red Hook Studios Inc.). And even better - annotate the videos with links to our Kickstarter Campaign and/or our Website (www.darkestdungeon.com).

Other stuff
Just a quick heads up on two things:
- Chris is working on some forum avatars for your favorite Interweb haunts. When people see your fly graphics, you can tell them where it came from: the Darkest Dungeon Kickstarter campaign!
- Chris will be streaming himself drawing an unnaounced Class Wallpaper this upcoming Tuesday (February 18th). It will be the evening PST time. We will confirm exact time before then.

Excited about the just announced Occultist. I have the impression we have too many melee fighters (Crusader, Leper, Bounty-Hunter, now the Hellion and Man-at-Arms too)
and not even a dedicated ranged specialist... I'm aware the Highwayman has a pistol but, he's not really a ranger/sniper archetype character.

I wonder if there's going to be a puppeteer type of character? Occultist makes me think of a summoner type of class or mage at least.

I'm postive there will be an archer/ranger and an arbalist/crossbowman. I also wouldnt be surprised to see some sort of chemist who throws vials or poisons around.

Update #7 is out.
